Lestat’s involvement in the plantation is one I remember being largely ignored by show fans. It stood out for me because that racist aspect of their character was used to ridicule and shame fans who loved book Louis yet Lestat remained a racist white man in both book and show and it was accepted. The double standard there was weird.

It's INCREDIBLY strange to me. Plenty of show fans do seem to see and criticize the double standard which I appreciate a lot, but I think it really does go to show that at the end of the day it's usually about who/what is more fun for people to engage with, not really deep-seated moral qualms. I obviously think it's perfectly reasonable to be like "hey I enjoy this really evil fucked up guy as a character" but it's irritating to me when people are like "well I already don't care for this character so I'll use my dislike of them to show that I'm a good person without missing out on anything I DO find fun". Like I've said a million times, I completely get people not fucking with book Louis at all for the plantation reason alone but like. You're going to have to give up Lestat too, brother.....

And just like with Louis, if you're really interested in the full complexity of Lestat's character, this part of him matters. He ceases to be himself without his constant need to punch down and hurt and subjugate others to make himself feel bigger. There's no price too high to stave off his inferiority complex, including becoming an abuser, a rapist, or a violent enslaver. He relishes his position visibly too, he wants to be the grotesque enforcer that he is on the plantation. For Louis, the institution of slavery is his normal and the scariness comes from his passive acceptance of and participation in evil. Lestat is scary because we see what he becomes at the first opportunity to be In Control.

How someone wants to engage with the characters and the narrative is up to them, but I would appreciate some internal moral consistency, at least as far as laying off people who like talking about book Louis if you like book Lestat.

there should be a term for characters you personally don't care about but you defend them anyways because the way people treat them is really uncomfortable. like ok this is a very middle-of-the-road character for me but the fandom's either been super misogynistic, racist, etc. about them or harassed innocent people who try to genuinely explore that character warts and all, and i find that more annoying than the actual character.
