My Childhood Ghost Story: The Little Girl Behind My Great Grandmother’s House 🏠 👧🏾👻
I don’t talk about this story very often, but it’s one of the few childhood memories that has stayed crystal clear throughout my entire life.
When I was around six years old, I spent a lot of time at my great-grandmother’s house during the summer.
She had a huge backyard with a garden, open fields, and a lot of land behind the house. It was the perfect place for a kid to run around and play all day.
That’s where I met a little girl.
She looked to be about my age. She wore her hair in pigtails, and we’d spend hours running through the fields together.
We laughed, explored, and even played inside her house, which sat behind my great-grandmother’s property.
To me, it all felt completely normal. She was just…my friend.
After a few days of this, I remember telling my mom and my great-grandmother that I’d made a new friend who lived behind the house.
They looked at each other.
Then they asked me what little girl I was talking about.
I described her.
They told me there wasn’t a little girl living back there.
At the time, I think they assumed I just had a vivid imagination. But I knew what I had experienced. I knew I had been playing with someone.
Not long after that conversation, I played with her one final time.
We ran around just like we always had, and I remember briefly visiting her house one last time.
It was a little white house, nothing too extravagant, but it was definitely lived in.
However, the next day, when I went outside to play, something was different…
The little girl’s house didn’t look the way that I originally remembered it.
Instead of me seeing the normal home that I had been visiting, it looked abandoned, like an old shack that hadn’t been lived in for years.
It looked weathered, worn down, and almost forgotten.
I remember standing there completely confused because that wasn’t the house that I had been playing in.
And after that day…I never saw the little girl again.
To this day, I can still picture her. I remember her pigtails. I remember running through the fields. I remember the house as it originally looked.
I’ve never been able to explain why, on that last day, it suddenly looked abandoned.
Was it an overactive imagination? A childhood memory that’s changed over time? Or did I experience something I still can’t explain? I honestly don’t know.
