hi there, I'm kind of new to this all! but it really fascinates me. what do you think a libra sun, taurus moon, capricorn rising, libra mercury, scorpio venus, and a virgo mars is like? i know that's a lot but i'm really curious and am so into this whole community!

Usually when I write these for people, it is some part of nature that pulls at me; the qualities of earth, water, air, and fire as they exist in their raw form are universally understood. One does not need to have visited the ocean to know the sound its waves make upon the rocks or the beach. Neither must one be familiar with the specific Genus species of tree we picture when we hear the soft rustle of wind among the leaves or the sunlight filtering through it.

And yet, the first thing I saw of your chart was a well-loved set of pens in a tin pencil case; used, familiar, depended upon. I saw a thin case of embroidery hooks fashioned out of wood, each with a colorful pompom on the end to denote their width and length. In other words, I saw astounding beauty and order; a child who took care of their things (which included getting those things dirty that were meant to) and derived intense joy from coloring within the lines. Did you keep your crayons and pencils in rainbow order? The Libra sun and Capricorn ascendant speak to an incredible sense of aesthetic organization. And thankfully, you won’t find me giving you advice here to introduce a little more chaos in your life; your moon plainly wouldn’t allow it. And if you find yourself in a place in life where organization seems like something you only dream of, I highly encourage you to find the still, deep center where all your innermost truths lie. The Scorpio of your attraction style and the direct, ordered, strategic strike of your volition will see you there easily.

As for your moon, I picture it wreathed in full, almost sexually suggestive roses; they are heavy with color and scent, the heads of their blossoms drooping under their weight and almost nodding in agreement or modesty. I don’t know if you have any interest in being a personal stylist or an interior designer, but I would imagine whatever you’d make for others (and yourself, deep down) to be polished, impeccable, and crafted with love. A proliferation of  Libra in someone’s chart can sometimes make their tastes somewhat bloodless; here is crafted perfection but…did a person make it? We look desperately for the smudged fingerprint, the dent, the tiny fleck of lint or angry spittle but find nothing. Balanced as you are by earth and water, you may not make the most immediate decisions but usually arrive at your conclusions with confidence. And you are content with not being the one who takes the first steps in the snow, nor are you one to generally demand the spotlight be on you at all times; going about the world knowing it is inherently beautiful, you can take part of it with you.

And when you bring it inside, you can open that tin of pencils, spread your hand across the thick and textured paper of your sketchpad, inhale the scent of wood and pulp, and arrive.

It is always interesting and a little more than revelatory what the  good people who request information include with their details. I don’t often get questions that include the decans (thought of as the  ten-degree subdivisions of each sign), especially in synastric matters, but the inclusion here adds another layer to things, certainly.

The thing that reaches me most about your inquiry is that very early fall, almost the sillage of summer when the Northern Hemisphere begins its first exhalation before the seasons truly change. Thus the bridge between these two people is not a long one; the lightposts between may be counted and the path seen to wander to some sunlit park. Gardens are popular because of their beauty, but can any of us say that we see the same things in the same way? Do we feel the same things while standing and gazing at those fragrant blooms, watching bumblebees tumble from daisy to rose? The Capricorn moon appreciates the overall look of the well-manicured and marvels at the tougher, more finicky plants that thrive here; the Cancer moon simply feels the welling of happiness, comfort, perhaps even ease. They may even make a silent vow to themselves: “I will try to remember this forever.”

Reading more of the conventional astrology books will tell you that the Aries sun and Virgo sun are inconjunct; these two signs “get” how the other works in a very surface-level sort of way but don’t personally understand it. There is truth to this assessment, but just as we know that the color of the world does not become darker just because we’re wearing sunglasses, it does not provide the whole truth. When it comes to these two signs, I instead see a great potential for understanding and perspective; it is almost like finding a door in the middle of the desert and a door in the middle of a moss-drenched wood. The other world is understood, as different as it is, even though the visitor from the other realm may not understand the ins and outs of the unfamiliar place. So, the advice goes to avoid the loamy pits beneath the cypresses as there is nowhere to gain purchase and therefore a danger of drowning…as well, the advice is to avoid condemned or dilapidated sand-engulfed mines—they’ve been closed for a reason!

The greatest potential for discord (if there is any) is in your Venus signs, which are diametrically opposed. And yet, what an interesting placement: two mutable signs, and with them the potential for great understanding or stubbornness. In my experience, there may be a lifelong pull to the opposite sign. The Pisces wonders how the Virgo can ever “turn off” or staunch the flow of feeling, give it shape, give it a name. The Virgo in turn wonders what it must be like to tiptoe along some stellar ocean floor of emotion and dreams without a care in the world. The Capricorn moon here has a desire for a bridge or some set of rules that permit the traversal between the two, and the Cancer qualities here appear to have a light source within or behind; the light is a desperate wish for reunion and stability.

Together, both admire the scales before them, taking in the whole as breath is drawn in and out. I would guess that if there is ever disharmony or strife in your relationship, all you’d need to do is change your surroundings: find a shore to walk and a city park to visit. Both have much to say.

Apologies for the absence, starting out as planned, spiraling out to unplanned. Let’s get down to business.

Your chart is quite intriguing—a brave sailor shielding their eyes and squinting at the sun from atop a high sea cliff. The forces of elements in your chart—fire, water, and earth—here are all in their deepest expressions. I liken Sagittarius to one finding their own inner sun, rather than waiting impatiently (Leo) or not waiting at all (Aries) for the sun to show itself. To be clear, I don’t think Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces are the “best” or most complete of their respective elemental expressions; oftentimes these wanderers are more likely to stray from the sunny and clearly marked path along the rolling hills only to find themselves utterly lost and tangled in their habits, thoughts, and emotions. As you go deeper in the expanse of the ocean, the water turns cold, oh so cold. Pisces sun feels this pull deep within their core, but you feel it in your heart.

I wonder if you sometimes feel the swell of the totality of what may be, the irresistible and somewhat strangely erotic expanse of possibility. If you could separate the different parts of yourself and ask what is the best part of a first kiss, the answers would be something like: Sagittarius sun: The thrill of it; Pisces moon: The vulnerability of it; Capricorn rising: The certainty of it. I always appreciate thoroughness in any of the queries I receive; yours is no exception. I am surprised and utterly delighted that you chose to include both you and your intended’s Juno placements; for those who don’t know, Juno is considered a newer, lesser celestial body (an asteroid) whose placement determines the person’s attitude and wants in a committed partnership—this is the picture of the happy couple on the mantle or the phone lockscreen; the quiet layer underneath the constructed mystique or open bluntness of the dating site profile. It used to dictate the person’s faithfulness, but there are other signs that better speak to where the eye wanders when the heart gets lonely (namely Black Moon Lilith).

A solar Aries and a solar Sagittarius speak to me of intense heat in terms both erotic and disagreement. Whatever you both feel, you tend to feel it extremely intensely, surmounting to incredible arguments rooted in stubbornness and perhaps even resentment, should the Taurus moon refuse to take the Scorpio moon seriously. But I don’t mean to be a portent of doom—the flipside of these lunar placements are those small moments akin to quiet days in and around the home where not a word is exchanged but the couple communicates and acts as one. I notice that I tend to receive asks about Pisces/Scorpio in a person’s chart more than other signs; what is it about the deep, watery depths that intrigues and mystifies us?

The person you’re curious about appears to very closely guard their private life as much as they are wont to complain about it, hinting here and there at who said what, and how dare a relative act this way—sometimes years after the fact. Relatedly, for this person, I imagine that dollhouse-related horror game or movie scenes to be particularly unsettling; there’s something about the way the miniature people move on their own in their own wooden and epoxy world, apparently perfect but moved by some invisible force to show an upsetting scene, usually a warning to the protagonist that asserts “I am already here” silently but maliciously.

I would also guess this person’s psychic shield to be like an impressively large shoal of ocean fish, a dazzling and dizzying display of silver that darts this way and that. We think with our logical brains that a predator could simply reach in and snap up a meal with little effort, but the overall effect of this underwater swarm is as mesmerizing from those hunters as it is for us watching passively. So perhaps this is the last person to agree to a group decision, or perhaps they’re the one who needs the most convincing…or perhaps both are true and the idea was theirs in the first place! I also note with this placement that the individual may have many friends but very few close ones.

It’s no wonder you’re drawn to this person; a Scorpio rising always has a bit of mystique to them (it is somewhat of a cliché, but I’ve yet to meet a dull one), and I would place money on the notion that this person either has a definite “look” be it a color, aesthetic, or style—or they wear cologne or some kind of fragrance. As well, the fifth house Venus (in Aries, which we’ll return to in a moment) gives them the sparkling confidence of a person who knows what they want and are unafraid to get it…leaving you wondering what this person is about, given what I said earlier about their sun and moon.

Aries and Scorpio are classically opposed, pure yang and yin respectively. I think of their relationship to be like the darkness and cool but persistent moaning of wind moving through a cave….versus the pain in the eyes of seeing sunlight for the first time, or the sudden and blinding glare of the sun off someone’s watch face. It sounds as though I’m circling closer to an analogy about Plato and his cave, but I promise I won’t. The astrological conflict lies elsewhere, anyway: what is the reconciliation between an intense need for privacy and the treachery that is others’ admiration?

I’d say that the closer you may try to get to this person, the more they may push you away, but hopefully you won’t take it personally. If anything, gentle insistence that you’ll be around if needed is more of the relief and assurance they were looking for than blunt, coarse words spoken from the heart. In other words, how would you best entice a cat? (The answer is of course that you don’t, not outwardly.)

The matter of a Libra in Venus is close to my own heart; it denotes a person who deeply, secretly, and perhaps eternally will always cherish love letters and notes. The Cancerian looks on and understands sentimentality, but for you it’s a bit different—for you, it’s less an emotional memory and more a strange bouquet you want to preserve. A crush you’ve befriended scrawls something in Sharpie on your wrist or hand and you cherish it forever, even though it says little more than “PAY ME BACK” or “$2″ or something mundane. But for a brief moment, there was that delicious physical contact…punctuated by the unorthodox incense that is Sharpie fumes. Perhaps you were surprised at yourself for allowing the crush to write on you; perhaps you were secretly ashamed at how much such a gesture meant to you…perhaps neither of these are true, but I can guarantee that the crush had no clue how you felt about them.

The nature of the Scorpio rising—and I hope you will forgive me here—is that soul who intrinsically “gets” the idea of a signature scent, color, or song. But what of that moon? And the powerful glint of the sun off the scales? I’ve noticed that people with Capricorn moons are excellent planners but are prone to an inordinate amount of worry and regret—there in their hands is the key to a cupboard of wondrous philters and potions of daydreaming, but instead of approaching the apothecary, they sit there and turn the key over in their hands, becoming intimately familiar with its scrollwork, heft, craftsmanship, and …oh, I know what this key goes to, I just don’t want to, not right now.

If there was one thing I’d want to make for you, it would be a beautiful cake that blooms with the color and shape of purple and blue hydrangeas. The intense and laughing mistress that is Scorpio would be satisfied at the bold color and appearance, the Libra in you would feel a sympathetic blooming in your soul at such a lovely display, and the Capricorn would appreciate immediately the work it would’ve taken to make. It's me again c: I've been finding I'm falling too far into my Pisces Mars. I can go full days lost in my thoughts, forming this second world with these people I've created, like I have a second life that just exists in my head. This usually only occurs when I'm not immersed in anything in particular or am not within anyone's company, in which circumstance I would lock myself in my room and dream. Do you have any advice on how to escape this? Thank you :)

The plight of the Pisces is this: Have you ever felt the roughness of absolutely nothing caught in your throat, the sting of absolutely nothing in your eyes so strong that you begin to tear up? What about the powerful electricity of an itch that nearly makes you jump?

I have long observed that more than any other sign, the Fishes understand the exact feeling and nature of the grain of sand that becomes the oyster’s pearl. It’s not a simple analogue about ocean life, either—there is something stirring in the Pisces soul like a ribbon of ice-cold water underneath the waves warmed by the powerful sun. The Pisces and all Fish-attuned just now imagined different shades of blue to give this metaphor some character, by the way.

Mars, to this sign, is a planet of brittle iron, dried flecks of blood from a minor injury you didn’t know you received. It’s the strange choking sensation you get while drinking from a cup you don’t like (kept in the rear of the cupboard for a reason, you tell yourself) that “ruins” the taste of your favorite drink.

Here meets the formless waves, terrifying and lawless in their chaos, with the perfect molecular structure of a planet classically associated with passion—recall that the nature of fire is seldom ordered and precise. Or is it? Flames lick at tinder, apparently spread as otherworldly carpet in the grass, dance in the hearth such that we may see shapes within, but we have mastered it, made it useful in smithing, medicine, and construction.

Fire and water command our respect when wielded as tools, and your situation is no different. Many ancient civilizations spread far and wide using the ocean as an ally, just as easily as they told stories of the waves’ capriciousness in their giving of gifts and taking of life. Old stories also tell us about the gift of fire as a thing that was in equal measure given freely, stolen, imitated, or simply wished for to deliver us from darkness.

I’m not sure how else to put this to you other than to conjure a visual that I hope will help: you have felt that delicious, insidious kiss of icy water in that saline warmth, and you have bottled it. Whether it was you who retrieved it or a mermaid’s boon, it does not matter. You know the shape and weight of this bottle, and no matter how you tightly clasp it in your hands, it will not warm. You have tried putting the water into different bottles—the most recently tempting option is a humble looking vessel of iron that has rusted and is blooming with spots of orange and red. The trick here is to trust yourself that this is the correct bottle, but you must not slosh the liquid around inside. Don’t violently shake it, don’t thump it on a table or knock it against the wall to try to loosen something from the bottle’s insides. Your deep water is a lovely gift that despite all appearances and warnings you’ve heard, can only help you. You don’t need much, and you never even questioned whether your supply could ever be exhausted—with a laugh, you suddenly realize: It is useful to me as much as I can contain it! When I can use it—and not the other way around—it can do wonderful things for me.

A long hiatus

Greetings again, my lovelies. Your friendly astrologer here once more with an apology for my long absence.

I could tell you that I was asleep and dreaming of the arcane knowledge in the stars, learning the feel and whispering the words to myself about their shape in the sky and in our lives...but it’s not true.

I could tell you that I was firmly entrenched in matters more urgent and cthonic, attending to crises and triumphs in my personal life...but that’s not entirely true either.

It won’t be a satisfying answer, but it is the true one: I had lost my taste for writing about astrology, and I didn’t feel it was proper and good and respectful to my inquirers to half-heartedly answer questions made in earnest.

So you will have to forgive my incredibly long stretch of nothingness—not so much as a message to thank you for the inquiry and let you know of the hiatus—and I humbly hope you will have me and my musings back.

I can promise regular replies and posts only inasmuch as you understand the ephemeral nature that are tumblr accounts. That said, I am happy to reopen these doors. Thank you at the very least for reading this.

What would you say about pisces sun, capricorn moon and leo rising? My sun is in the 8th house, which sounds kinda scary! My chiron is in virgo and the 1st house. I have a mercury/mars conjunction and also mars/pluto square. I do relate alot to Pisces, but Scorpio still is my dominant sign. Pisces is the 2nd though.

Oh my, I do love it when I receive asks that are written exactly as I would expect their signs would write! (Maybe I should do another signs post, “Signs Writin’ an Ask About Their Signs”) You are correct; though Scorpio dominates your chart, you sound thoroughly Piscesan to me, and I love it. :)

Looking at your chart, there’s a lot going on, and I appreciate that you wrote about the angles as well as the houses. The more details we get, the more accurate we can become!

The sun being in your eighth house (of sex, death, and secrets) shows a life afflicted with pain, drama, and perhaps even crises. That we have the Fishes here makes me wonder if you have had quite the time processing your feelings and the events as they happened. Added to that is the Capricorn moon, the moon that loves order, organization, and sequence. Perhaps you’ve felt like the more you try to make sense of things, the more confused you become, resulting in a depressing “why even bother?” cycle. Chiron in your first house all but reaffirms this; that perhaps sometimes even mid-sentence you don’t know what you think or know to be true about yourself. Where others can instantly identify what their spirit animal or patronus would be, perhaps you have a few ideas, or you know deep down that whatever answer you give today is not permanent. Here I’ll advise your Capricorn moon exclusively: It is okay for your answer to change. You are still you.

Your Mercury/Mars conjunction responds “well of course I’m still me, what sort of advice is that?” But listen to your Mars as it squabbles with your Pluto: what you are today, who you think you are...all of it is transient. And why bother with astrology, if even the firmament gives us only a snapshot of our selves? It seems like a difficult answer to understand, but both ideas are equally true here.

If you aren’t already, I think reading some old science fiction would be really rewarding for you—when the age of computers was at its dawn, when robotics was in its circuit-board infancy, the great minds of literature asked themselves some hard questions: What is humanity? What is identity? When computers can do everything for us, what is divine? What is the value of the individual, and what is the value of the group?

Your soul is the gently glowing lavender core of a sparkling, brilliantly obsidian spiral galaxy. We note that the center of a galaxy does not directly command its outer arms, yet all are nominally included in its ideation; all are part of the same cluster. Death and rebirth are your many arms, expanding and contracting in the soothing silence of the vacuum. Hi! I'm a Capricorn Sun, Libra Ascendant, Taurus Moon, Capricorn Mercury, Capricorn Venus, Pisces Mars. I was wondering if I would be compatible with a Sagittarius Sun, Capricorn Moon, Scorpio Mercury, Capricorn Venus and Cancer Mars? I'm curious because he seems attracted to me, but I didn't think a Capricorn and Sagittarius was naturally a compatible couple. Maybe it's something else in the chart? I love the idea of the two of you snuggled together; two children blessed by the Fae’s winter court, goats’ horns and centaur’s tail festooned with garlands of iced cranberries, waxy mistletoe leaves, and blood-red blooms of amaryllis. Together you collect the meager stars in the winter sky, icy blue orbs that are warm beyond all explanation. Returning inside to warm beside the fire, you knit the twinkling lights into scarves for next year.

I can see why you’ve taken to the notion that an archer and a goatfish can’t get along in a relationship, but I’d hesitate to say that any one sign “can’t” get along with another. Astrologically speaking, would you say that you can’t know the mind of your neighbor? You can’t know their every thought or predict their every behavior, but living next door affords you a uniquely intimate vantage point: you can see how often they leave their house, what state their lawn and the house itself are in, who visits, what pets or children get the run of the yard, and how they behave toward you as you share a border.

I think Sagittarians are probably the only sign in the zodiac who can pull off dreamy, easy smiles. The more analytical of us see it and ask: “what’s on your mind?” or “Something funny?” And they’ll chuckle, shrug, and say that it wasn’t anything really. Or maybe they’ll tell you that they just thought about the word “ointment” and thought it sounded hilarious. Thanks for your question! I can see why you are curious about this person’s energy; the vibrant, warm and effusive sun pairs with what I believe is one of the icier moons—conjunct Pluto, no less!—as well as a clever, quick mind, and a tendency toward silliness and hugs. Is this person a hugger? Unless there are great conflicts, I assume all Cancer Venuses are huggers, or at least high-fivers. Or perhaps they are not huggers but wish they were.

A person like this may have a sarcastic sense of humor, deeply-held opinions that may be stated so firmly as to sound factual, and a loud and silly manner in social situations. But if you can get this person alone (and you may discover that they do not like being alone for very long), you’ll find out that a lot of what they put out as their public face is sometimes an effort to drown out the oppressive, maddening silence of a quiet apartment. 

If you have romantic designs upon this person, my first and foremost advice would be to bake or cook them something from scratch. The Scorpio moon in the mix would also compel me to advise you to make a recipe that your family considers a secret...something you’ll dangle in front of the Leo for the right price.
