Here’s my very long overdue rant about non sexual abuse victims throwing sexual abuse into their character’s storylines.

Sexual abuse is not a plot device.

If there is sexual abuse in your character’s history or you have included it in your character’s history, you need to know it inside and out. It has consequences for years and years to come. Do your research. It’s very disrespectful to include sexual abuse in your character’s storyline just for attention.

Sexual abuse shouldn’t be romanticized.

It’s not a joke. It’s not enjoyable. I understand it’s difficult for those unaffected by sexual abuse to understand just how it feels, but it’s awful. No one falls in love with their rapist. Most people are completely dismantled by just thinking about the person who assaulted them. Someone being attractive does not excuse their abilities and past of sexual assault.

Sexual abuse scenes shouldn’t be written.

I think this one speaks for itself. Don’t even bring yourself into that mindset. Don’t subject anyone else to that. It doesn’t matter how many authors have done it before you, writing rape scenes is so inappropriate. It’s unhealthy to submerge yourself into writing situations without consent, no matter if you justify it as a ‘hobby’ and ‘fictional’.

In general just treat this delicate situation as it should be treated. With respect. Don’t create a character to subject them to abuse for your own amusement or to gain sympathy for your character from others. If you are unsure about how to properly incorporate this into a character’s past, don’t include it.
