Takano’s Bad Eyesight

Watched Sekaiichi Hatsukoi Propose earlier today and received a freebie from the cinema.

The freebies changes every week. Since today’s the first week of the movie, I’ve received the Manga Pamphlet from the cinema. The story is short (its 8 pages only) and its a continuation of Onodera and Takano story in the film.

My favourite math fact is that 0.9999999.. is equal to 1. Exactly. Not approximately. Not as a rounded number. 0.9999 (recurring) is exactly 1.

Here’s another perspective on why .999... repeating is exactly equal to 1.

For any two distinct real numbers, we can always find a rational number strictly between them, i.e. that rational number must be able to be expressed as a terminating decimal or a repeating decimal.  To be clear, that rational number is strictly between the two values; it is not allowed to be equal to either.

Suppose k is a rational number strictly between 1 and 0.9999....  If this is possible, then, I can write k exactly as either a decimal with finite digits, or I can write k as a repeating decimal.  The problem is, there are no decimals with finite digits between 1 and 0.999... , and there is no way to write a repeating decimal that is greater than 0.999... and still less than 1.  Either way, a k strictly between 1 and 0.999... does not exist.  The only way this can be true is if those two numbers are not actually distinct.  That is to say, 1 = 0.999.....

i truly appreciate how math seems like it’s this infallible always-true only-one-answer thing, when in reality math is just like:

There’s also a really simple algebraic proof which I find kinda neat. Ok so let x = 0.99999999... Now multiply both sides by 10 10x = 9.9999999..... Minus x from both sides (and using the fact that x = 0.9999...) 10x - x = 9.99999... - 0.99999... 9x = 9 Divide by 9. x = 1

Therefore, since x was defined as 0.9999... this implies that 0.9999... = 1.

There is also, of course, a more rigorous proof but that involves infinite sums but I don’t think I’m capable of explaining that. Also also, all the people in the notes who think that 0.99999... = 1, I’d just like to say that, 9.99999... out of 10 mathematicians agree that 0.99999... = 1.

(remember Takano’s last thought in the previous chapter when he cupped Ritsu’s cheek was “Looks like I do want this guy after all” so right now he’s just admiring Ritsu and thinking how much he wants him to be his… so cute > . <)

Ritsu: “Please stop doing things like.

We’re at work.”

Takano: Oh really.

Ritsu’s thoughts: “Not good (couldn’t see the last part of the sentence sorry > . < I’ll fix it later when I have a better image)

I have to talk about this.

Ritsu: “C- Can I take some of your time someplace this weekend!?

I- I want to talk about what has happened up to this point.

I am feeling guilty about always being so complicit.

Takano: “That is long” 

(that was almost word for word for what they said in high school. Takano had the same response but said it out loud. I think Oda momentarily possessed Ritsu during this conversation)

Ritsu: “So I’ll just give you the gist of it, first off…”
