“Atheism isn’t ‘New Atheism’. There are so many people who aren’t cishet white men and who have experiences outside what you think of when you think of ‘Atheism’. People who have a lot of privilege have gotten to be the face of atheism because that’s how privilege works, but the majority of us are marginalized people whose race, gender, sexuality, etc. have shaped our relationship to religion and nonreligion, which you’ll miss if the only kind of atheist you acknowledge is a straight white cis man. Furthermore, that image of atheism that comes to your mind is affected by the anti-atheist sentiment that exists in our Christian-dominant culture, so if you don’t usually imagine atheists as having complex and sincere motivation for their beliefs, consider why.”

@radicallyimpatient please delete my post from your blog. I’m not comfortable with terfs/radfems/swerfs interacting with my posts. thanks
@athiestsafe kiss my ass bitch
radfems using misogynistic slurs. how original 🙄
…I wish i could say I’m surprised
wow this post took a turn
This time, the radfem did nothing wrong.
“kiss my ass bitch,” is absolutely the correct response to “please delete my post from your blog.”
“pLeAsE dElEtE mY pOsT fRoM yOuR bLoG!” would also be acceptable.
have you heard of this great thing called respecting other people's boundaries
sorry i haven’t been so active lately! but i did make a discord server for atheists, atheist-leaning agnostics, and atheist-questioning folks. it’s an intersectional, queer-positive space and you can discuss atheism and religion as much as you want! shoot me an ask off anon for an invite link :)
do not ask if:
you’re a terf/swerf/radfem
you’re an exclusionist in any way (truscum/transmed/ace/bi exclusionist etc)
you’re right wing/republican/alt-right
I will be checking your blog! so remember to send me an ask. if you dm me i will still make you send me an ask. this is non-negotiable. that said, feel free to join, I’m very friendly and I love talking to fellow atheists.
Cannot fucking believe that people are still uncritically reblogging that terrible post about how us gays and pocs are only atheists because of religious trauma while white cishets can only come to atheism through the dreaded evil logic
“normal people all worship gods like they’re supposed to, something should be deeply wrong with you to justify you being an atheist” - people who are allegedly woke
Periodic reminder that that post explicitly referred to the “cult of science” and several thousand ostensibly progressive people saw absolutely nothing wrong with that framing.
Yeah sex is cool i guess (if you’re into that sort of thing) but have you ever tried blasphemy or moderate-to-severe heresy against the tyrant that calls himself “God”?
Plenty of people have outlined what’s fucked up about that “white male atheism is fundamentally different from Marginalized Atheism” post, but I just hit on the main reason it bothers me:
It positions religion as the human default, from which you are excused only if you’re sufficiently damaged. Like “I guess it’s okay if you’re shipping to cope” – if it’s just a consolation prize for being broken and pitiable, it’s not really okay at all. It’s okay if you can’t be religious because of trauma, but always remember that this is a personal flaw, a result of your damage, and that *healthy people* are religious.
Under this schematic, atheism isn’t simply another way to be human and think human thoughts. It’s a deviation from the “natural”, i.e. religious, state, and you’d better have a damn good reason for going against the grain. You think you can defect from normal society just because you *want* to? That’s just your white male privilege talking. Marginalized people have suffered enough to earn the right to defect, but you’re gonna shut up and praise God like a normal person.
@mentally ill atheists who were told their atheism is a result of their mental illness: you’re wonderful and powerful and there’s nothing wrong with you
@mentally ill atheists who were told their mental illness is a result of their atheism:
We know you didnt choose your illness. Your illness is not your fault. You are wonderful and strong and you dont need theism to get through!
theism has always been a choice
no it has not. please don’t erase the long histories of people being persecuted for not believing the right things. a choice between one faith and death is not a choice
By theism I meant religion.
Well, now it is a choice. Lots of people died so we could get to the point where we are today. Posterity is posterity. I’ll honor them by taking the chance they never could: have a choice in whether I want to follow the ascribed God or not.
Alas, its never easy isn’t it? Especially if you live in a religious society
it's not all posterity. I have respect for the choice you are making, but people are still ostracized, thrown out of their homes, and killed for being atheists

I'd just like to reiterate that your belief or lack of it is like, your thing. you don't have to prove it to anybody else. your beliefs can be the worst mishmash of stuff and they'd still be valid as long as they aren't hurting anybody. and yeah, that anybody includes you
if your beliefs are hurting you, if you feel distress or anxiety when you think about the things you believe in, it's okay to look for a new set of beliefs that don't hurt. the only important person in this equation is you. everything else is immaterial.
please keep yourself safe above all else

even if you can't practice self care, you deserve it. your inability to take care of yourself does not mean you don't deserve to be taken care of. you deserve good things even if your circumstances are trying to convince you otherwise
Shipbreaking #13, Chittagong, Bangladesh by Edward Burtynsky
do things that make you feel happy and satisfied and comfortable. practice self care in every way you can.
"atheists aren't oppressed–" we literally get killed Jan what more do you want
