Though there were a thousand and one questions that sprung to mind the second she actually had him in front of her again, Miller immediately reminded herself that they were currently in her office, at the station, and that he was only here in a work capacity. In comparison to the subject matter at-hand, her personal concerns were trivial at best. A quick glance to the door, to make sure it was properly closed behind the man, and she settled back into her chair.
“I’m not sure if you’ve had a chance to acquaint yourself with some of the most recent cases we’ve got going on right now that would require your input, but I’ll go ahead and inform you that it’s very likely that a good portion of them deal with the supernatural in one way or another and that the council saw it fit to have a supernatural in the coroner’s position to be able to provide a niche expertise that a mundane would lack,” she stated evenly, before reaching over to grab two of the case files currently on her desk.
She placed them on the other side of the desk within his reach and said, “These two are just some of what we’ve been dealing with over the last three months. We have a working theory, but as a majority of the department is comprised of mundanes, not really much to work with.”
He hadn’t expected a warm or familial greeting, and truthfully, for now at least it would simply be easier to slip into a comfortable working relationship. A time would come when he’d need to explain himself, but the truth was he was no more willing to talk about his past was than Miller seemed to be to ask towards it. From what he had gathered Miller had come into herself and the position of Sheriff was one that was well-earned, but for all that occurred within Fallcrest and with the knowledge available to her, Atlas could only surmise that her job in the small town was infinitely more difficult than she had originally hoped it would be.
“I’m aware of the circumstances surrounding the council’s decision to bring me on board,” Atlas offered plainly, his eyes on the file closest to him as he picked it up and immediately began to leaf through it. “I’m still getting settled but,” Atlas picked up the other file, having already ascertained the information he needed from the previous one, “I’ve been reviewing the cases left open by my predecessor and these two seem to follow the same pattern as a few others.” He’d also been reviewing the cases that followed the suspicious trend of ‘animal attack,’ ‘natural disaster,’ or ‘freak accident.’ His current personal favorite was a case where a person had been frozen solid, the coroner at the time had deduced that the victim had frozen to death… Accurate, if not bizarre as the body was found in the middle of the forest during the hottest day of the year.
It was not to satiate some sick curiosity that he went as deep as he did, truthfully it was for the sake of justice, every single person who had been labelled a victim of an ‘animal attack’ when the truth was something far more monstrous was denied justice, and Atlas couldn’t stand for that. “What about these cases leads you to believe a supernatural entity might be involved?”
