WIP Ask Game
For @royalbesties and @this-geek a snippet of time travel….
So will probably go nowhere, but I like the idea of everything being a bit too bright as opposed to Skeldale being really dark…
“Oh.”
“Mr Farnon?”
“Mrs Hall?”
“Where are we?”
Wherever they were everything was white.
White and bright.
Too bright, Audrey thought briefly. A funny smell filled her senses too. It were familiar smell, a bit like the carbolic soap she used on the sinks yet stronger. “Where are we? What is this place?” She heard herself repeat.
Next to her Mr Farnon looked as stunned as she felt. His mouth open, slight confused. One minute they’d been stood in front of the wardrobe, the next they were in what looked like a storage room.
They were also still holding hands.
“Siegfried…”
In the distance a dog started to bark and a strange repetitive buzzing noise that almost sounded like a telephone started up.
“I haven’t the foggiest.”
“Why is it so bright?”
The question went unanswered.
“Maybe we should-.” Audrey started to say but the sound of footsteps and voices cut her off as did a deep booming laugh that caused a flash of something - she didn’t know what - to flutter in her chest.
Then as if on cue there was another bark.
“Quick here.”
She felt herself being back pulled into the corner of the storage room and to where only seconds earlier a door had been. “What on earth…!”
“Shush.”
The footsteps stopped right outside the door. The voices now as loud as they could be.
‘Ibiza?’
‘Ibiza, 10 days in the sun sun sun. £999 all inclusive - 5 stars.”
‘Does Em know?’
‘Does she heck. Well she will in about 30 minutes when I tell her.’
‘Good luck with that. Don’t be WhatsApping her that Jen - tell her to her face. I keep telling his lordship we need a holiday but he’s not budging on me.’
‘Aww he will. He’ll do ought for you.’
‘I don’t even care if it’s a week in Wales, I want a holiday.’
‘You tell Boss. Order him.’
Then there was silence.
“Mr Farnon… where are we?”
“I don’t know.”

May 1947
“Good lord, will you look at all these!”
He’d found the photos during one of his wife's spring cleans. This year they had both (him more reluctantly) taken on the challenge of the small attic space that no one had dared to venture into for as long as Siegfried could remember. It was a room they kept locked these days now as Rosie and Jimmy and recently Mary grew more inquisitive.
In truth, Siegfried hadn’t the foggiest what was stored in there except the cobwebs and spiders but Audrey had insisted and for some reason it suddenly felt the right time to venture up there.
Plus, the delight on his wife’s face when he had agreed indicated to him that maybe she had been more than itching to get past the barricaded threshold and ‘break the seal’ as she’d so politely put it.
‘It’s not Tutankhamen’s tomb’s my love, we are not a poor man's Howard Carter!’ He had told her while rattling the key in the lock. The playful slap that then landed on his arse moments later almost distracted him enough to suggest they do something else with the time instead, but she was already pushing past him and shining the torch into the dark before he could suggest it.
‘Maybe later,’ he’d heard her mutter in reply and decided he would be holding her to that and make no mistake.
‘Once more into the breach then my love, once more!’
The flimsy box of photos had been hidden deep inside an East India Company tea chest under layers of old fabric and what he suspected was the remnants of a rodent’s nest. “I must have stored it there when we purchased Skeldale. My father had only passed a few months before and the plan had been for him to move in with myself and Evelyn but he never made it. And I couldn’t bare…”
He felt Audrey nod over his shoulder as they laid each photo carefully one by one.
“Is that your parents?” She asked, pointing at a very formal looking family still.
It was definitely a wedding day Siegfried noted. Although judging by the expressions everyone wore it didn’t appear to be a happy occasion. His mother in blue, holding flowers, his father in a smart and formal looking suit. Either side of the ‘happy’ couple sat family and friends looking equally as sterned faced.
“Yes,” he nodded, “its their wedding day.”
“None of them look happy about Siegfried.” He already knew she was thinking of their day that had been filled with laughter and love and watched as she picked up the stiff card and turn it over gently in her hands.
“I rather think it was a serious affair back then. My mother was much younger than Pa of course. Ten years.”
“Right… Siegfried…”
“Yes my love,” he replied, his attention already drawn to a different photograph of a baby he suspected was him.
“When’s your birthday?”
Siegfried huffed playfully. “I’m offended you even need to ask.”
“I know when it is you daft apeth - 19th November 1893 - I were just wondering… your parents wedding date is July of the same year…”
June 1893…

Siegfried is there for her.
Part 2 of my not so necessarily serious headcanons
Audrey was an only child, adored by her father and grandparents while the relationship with her mother was a bit difficult.
The name of the 2nd rat is Dorothy.
Robert Hall can't stay away from the bottle, but he still misses Audrey every day.
Siegfried is talking to Evelyn's photo when no one is watching him.
Maurice Oliver was in love with Siegfried.
Tom Chapman is an "illegitimate" child.
Siegfried still thinks of River.
Richard Alderson was in the Blue Lagoon.
Hugh Hulton married Margot, but never stopped loving Helen.
James' mother is jealous of the Skeldale family, because James chose them.
James Sen. has developed a crush on Audrey just because that's how it works 🤣

Modern AU time
Audrey doesn’t get out, she works hard as a nurse and is about to become a Grandma for goodness sake. She’s not interested in finding a fella either, for any use, especially one who is the local vet and is wearing lovely aftershave. Especially not him.
Born from a plot bunny involving a 1940’s style cotton bikini, modern day Audrey is going back to the era we know her from the best by way of a WW2 victory re-enactment party.
Think Village Halls, Union Flags and Vera Lynn.
The prompt "Accidental Mirroring" was sent to me by @royalbesties. Not sure, this is what you wanted it to be, but here we go...
He had never noticed it, or at least, he hadn't given it too much thought before, but now he couldn't unsee it. Was he now cursed? Thinking about it, he would prefer being blindsided, oblivious, unaware. Ignorance, as they said, was bliss.
"Blimey."

"How dare you?!"
Siegfried had rarely seen Audrey Hall this angry. Her back was straight like a plank, her eyes viciously on fire. Even when she read him the riot act every now and then, there was always this subtle hint of generosity or mockery in her demeanour. Not this time though. Right now she was in a cold fury, and he thanked the holy Saint Nick that none of it was directed at him. His housekeeper rarely became very protective of him, or in this case territorial, but he couldn't deny the affect it had on him, and he was glad he was standing behind a very large and heavy dog that separated him from the owner, otherwise known as the poor sod who had awaken her anger.
