While I don't talk about it nearly as much as other things and am in no way involved in a fandom around it I ADORE Broadchurch. Its first series may be one of the best tv series ever (in my opinion). It's so beautiful and amazing and just. OUGH. So if you want to talk to me about it please do.
it's weird so many of my hyperfixations have david tennant in them. i didn't choose to watch any of them bc he was there it just happened like this. i think he's haunting me
I'm still figuring out how to draw my beloved aliens so apologies in advance for the lack of art right now !!! Hopefully once I'm more comfortable drawing things from my new hyperfixations I'll get into a more consistent posting schedule

“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
Thirteenth Doctor (Doctor Who) vs. Barbara Gordon (DC Comics)
Thirteenth Doctor
Barbara Gordon
Remaining time: 5 days 19 hours
Propaganda below the cut:
Thirteen:
Despite being a great incarnation of the character, somehow she is uniquely bad. Despite having many of the same traits as the 'male' Doctors, somehow it is worse when she does it. She's constantly held up to greater scrutiny and one cannot help but see that misogyny plays a huge role here
Dared to be an incarnation of The Doctor who was played by a woman and all the needs and geeks were as normal about that as you'd expect
‘Jodie Whittaker (actor) killed the show’ ‘the Thirteenth Doctor sucks and is bad and new who sucks after her!!’ Etc holy moly. So much bashing of the show because of her and not because the writers just sucked for a while (which honestly is the case for most of the show)
She's literally the exact same character the Doctor has always been- hypocritical self righteous bullshit and all. But for sooooommmmeeee reason it's charming and compelling and adds great depth to the character when it's David Tennant but it's shallow and poorly written and inconsistent when it's Jodie Whittaker
She won the poll for Doctor most likely to bite someone even though Eleven bit someone onscreen. She's great
This may have already been said but BBC literally had to apologise for 13 not knowing how to comfort Graham at the end of Can You Hear Me. Which is completely insane because when a male doctor gaslights his female companion that’s allowed but she’s not allowed to be even just awkward?
Despite being the main character of the show this version of the Doctor experiences probably the most hate for no fault of her own. I have seen so many people criticize her for the same things they praise the other versions of the Doctor for. And while some of her actions are questionable, that is who the Doctor has always been- they are never in the moral right 100% of the time.
But also, she's fun! She eats dirt and ignores personal space, and so much more- she's just as brilliant as any other version of the Doctor and yet she experiences so much hate! And that just comes down to the poor writing choices that were made with her stuff, but even then she was such an interesting and compelling character!
She has a canon love interest who's a woman and so many people get pressed about that but don't care at all when they're a man who has female love interests! She's messy and runs from her past, she finds out the entire life she has lived is based of a lie! A lie that was quite literally built on the exploitation of her as a child!!! Thirteen is such a compelling character who makes complicated choices based off what options she has been presented with and they aren't always good choices- but once again, I point you towards every previous incarnation who have all at some point made bad decisions that made things worse for everyone. Thirteen is an incredibly nuanced character, and I wish more people could recognize that.
Barbara Gordon
Fandom loves to just paint her as Batman's tech support or Dick Grayson's understanding, girlbestfriend ex :/
She's a literal genius, hacker extraordinaire, capable of rivaling Batman in her stubborness and need for control. There's so much wrong with this woman; I love her. She's insane and deserves to lez out with Black Canary <3
Comic book woman. But being serious the killing joke and her being one of the most popular examples of fridging, her sexualization, Tom Taylor’s Nightwing run with her in it, her very very often being reduced to a side piece to a male character, etc, etc.
My beautiful disabled wife who is invading everyone’s privacy <333
barbara is usually just associated with dick. oh and she’s oracle and she knows everything haha. we’re not going to think about why she is such a controlling person with her finger on the pulse of everyone in the hero/villain/sometimes high up ppl in power though because she’s just there to be a bamf girlboss and/or for exposition. and of course! in the comics she’s not always oracle or even always in a wheelchair because she’s a Cool Woman and therefore can’t be permanently disabled and in a wheelchair because dc loves ableism!! DIE BY MY BLADE JFCCC
Now I hate to bring up shipping and ship wars, but if you for whatever reason wish to see misogyny directed at Barbara Gordon, then you need to look no further than the anti dickbabs tag. Have a scroll through yourself, the way some of these people talk about her is vile.
Calling her ugly and/or comparing her in looks to dick grayson's other love interests, stuff like "why would he choose the bland boring librarian over a literal gorgeous warrior princess" (< not a direct quote but I've seen its like). As if calling a woman ugly or not as pretty is a valid criticism of a woman, or anyone for that matter.
90% of the ships criticism is directed solely at Barbara. If it's Dick getting criticised, then it's usually either a footnote in a paragraph ripping apart Barbara or it's "I don't like the way Dick is characterised in this pairing" but phrased in a way that implies that they blame Barbara and not the writers for dropping the characterisation ball.
There are some valid criticisms about how her character has, in runs like Tom Taylor's nightwing, been scrubbed of her interesting flaws (the same flaws that they call her toxic for), but the language they use is so gross. Specifically I'm thinking of the way she is compared and likened to a pet dog always following Dick around and calling her pathetic for it. Like yes, I do dislike the way she is written almost entirely in the supportive girlfriend role during that run, but think for one moment about the kind of language you are using.
Also additional propaganda for Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain too, there was a tumblr poll I think months ago asking which Batfamily character has been sexualised most by Comics. Babs Steph and Cass were all options in that poll. Dick Grayson won. They make a few jokes about a male characters butt and everyone loses their minds meanwhile the sexualisation of women in comics (any media really) is so prevalent that people don't even notice it.
The thing about comic book characters (like Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown) is that fandom misogyny bleeds into canon in a way that it pretty much never does anywhere else, because fans become writers.
They got rid of Barbara's disability because the Batgirl "fans" in charge were nostalgic for a version of the character they had crushes on when they were kids, they make choices for Steph based on their personal feelings about her romantic relationship with a male character whose 90s comics they loved, etc and so forth. Even without the people in charge being fans themselves, Steph was buried for so long because she was declared "toxic" as a character (ie they thought fans would have issues with her if she appeared).
It's really the most painful part of being a fan of female characters in this sort of long running multi-author canon. At least when I watch my usual female favs get torn apart by the fandom, I know that the guy I just blocked for misogyny will never get to write like five different cartoons where she hooks up with her boyfriend's dad.
