Atticus is unaware that the birthday just after graduation his parents sent a card. It arrived at the university just after he moved out of the dorms and was lost amongst other letters.

It hadn’t come down that hard yet, and her father’s house was only what- twenty, twenty five minutes away? Pulling her coat on, stuffing her hair into her hood, Charlotta turned hustled toward the door. Maybe, if she was lucky, Atticus wouldn’t be quick enough off the couch.
“Don’t leave, okay?”
“Lottie!” he called, jumping off the couch as soon as he noticed where she was heading. He didn’t borther striding towards her yet, after all she was much faster than him and already closer to the door. Instead he swept his arm towards the window, which he had already taped up, where outside the rain was being swept around by wind.
“Are you nuts? Even you’ll be blown around in that and you heard what they said. Stay inside cos this is going to get worse, and quickly,” he started, letting out a sigh. “Even if you do make it there, you won’t make it back.”

“Well, I can help if ya want, though it is kinda funny watching you struggle.” She teased lightly.
“Thanks Drew, you really need to stop spending so much time around my other family members,” he replied, shooting her a smile before dumping a load into her arms. “You’re a gem.”
huntress-kennicot:
“Looks to me like you’re in a bit of a pickle.”
“Yeah... I didn’t exactly expect the lady to give me so many of the files. I think she misunderstood what I was asking for.”

The words calmed her for a moment. She remembered her mother whispering it to her to calm her down on her first mission. They weren’t very religious, but there was something comforting in the words. Like a superstition that meant they were going to be okay.
A broken laugh came out of her, “Thank fuck one of us knows it. I always tripped over the words. Mom told me it was natural for me to mess it up, that when I needed it, God would help. Course she said that when I was seven and had a lisp.”
She looked over at the bottle on the floor near her. It was tempting her to grab, but she also wasn’t sure she wanted to go to sleep in the Church anymore. After all she might as well burn in here.
“I used to go to confession - when I skipped school that’s where I was. That or looking at art. I told you I was on a mission and I was lying. I thought it would help and I realized at it only counts if you stop the sin. So I stopped going to Church.”
She listened to his request and the tears stung her eyes in away they hadn’t in awhile. She had to be strong in front of him right? He couldn’t see her like this. Not this far of a mess.
“I remember all of it Atticus. You know why hunters die young? It’s not because it’s dangerous it’s because you remember everything. It gets into your head, and you can see it in everything. By the end you’re the monster you’re trying to fight. No matter how good you think you are. How strong you think you are it comes, and it breaks you. Only you can’t stop it, because if you quit someone else takes your place. If you die someone else’s life is forfeited. And then you let your kids see nightmares because you try to get them to understand why. And it’s horrifying.”
She coughed her free arm covering her eyes. “Don’t come to get me. I can’t stop you - I’m at the church, but I’m telling you don’t come get me. I couldn’t give you a normal childhood, but I fucking tried to give you a way out. And you need to let me go. If you come get me I’m not going to be able to leave and I’m going to corrupt you. I don’t want to, but I’m a monster Atti. And that’s what they do.”
Atticus let out a small sigh, a ghost of a smile tracing across his face despite the situation. “Yeah, well you know me Lil, I was always the one that could memorise the words taught to us over and over, while you were the one that could go out and do what needed to be done,” he said. And that was the truth; Atticus had always been best at memorising facts and repeating the lessons they were taught back, but give him a weapon and place him in the field and he freezed up. In many ways Atticus and Lilith were polar opposites, and maybe that’s why he latched onto her like he did.
There was nothing he could do but listen to her words, unsure of what to say. The knowledge that she would go and sit in a church, to perhaps hate what she did almost as much as he did. And that was what he did, he simply sat in the driver’s seat and listened to her poured her heart out and as she did he felt his break. Atticus was so much younger than Lilith that he hadn’t known a lot of what happened as he grew up, but now they were both adults and he was starting to realise that Lilith was struggling, and perhaps always had been. It was clear that the death of their parents affected her far more than it had him.
“Bullshit, I’m coming to you and you know it. Lil, don’t you realise you did it? You succeeded, you gave me a way out and nothing that has happened or will happen will change that. But you’re my sister and I’m never going to let you go - I never did and now... now I realise how much you did for me and I’m not going to lose you. Look, I won’t force you to come back home with me and eat the fabulous meal I cooked, but I still want to see you. I love you Lil.”
He wished that he didn’t have to hang up, but if he wanted to get to his sister he knew he had to. And so he regretfully rung off and put the car into gear. It wouldn’t take him long to get to the church.

Lilith heard the ring on her phone and sighed as she pulled her legs up to herself. Her bottle being put down for the phone. She laid down on the pew as she looked up at the ceiling. It took her a moment to click the phone on and in that moment she wanted to run.
Just don’t answer the phone. Just keep it off. Just lay here and let herself go to sleep for a night. She’d wake up in a few hours - and it will hurt, but at least it was peaceful.
Still her voice rang out. Almost to loud. It felt thick and heavy in her mouth. “Remember that prayer mom used to say? The one about the valley -about the evil. I’m trying to remember it, but I keep getting it wrong. The words keep getting jumbled up- can’t even do the Our Father right.” She didn’t know why this meant anything to her anymore, but bothered her. Wasn’t she supposed to take comfort in knowing something else was there?
“Can’t be saved if I can’t even say the fucking prayers can I?”
For a few moments Atticus thought she wasn’t going to answer and that would be when he started to panic. Panic that she had instead gone to the docks and gotten the first boat out of there. That she would make true to her promise and leave him behind here, that silence would reign between them once more. But then he heard the click of an answer and her voice met him - gravelly and torn up and Atticus paused in his footsteps.
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake,” the younger started, pushing himself forwards again and closed the gap to his car.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.”
He was sitting in the driver’s seat now, staring at the wheel as he spoke into the phone. “You can remember it now. But where are you Lil? Let me come and get you.”
prinsessa-lottie:
She exhaled when he pulled away from her, a sigh bore from both relief and disappointment at the lack of his weight upon her. She was cold without him, and her teeth sank along the skin of her own wrist, bearing down. He came back just as quickly as he had left her, and Lottie released her own skin with a wet pop.

lilith-thompson:
Lilith didn’t like Christmas. It wasn’t like it burned her - although their were a lot of people who assumed it. Nothing bad had happened during the season, but it was like a mirror. It showed her who she used to be and she missed it to badly to keep the mirror up.
Still Atticus had asked for a real Christmas Eve for once. Where she was actually there and not hunting. But as she drove her hands shook, even as she strangled the wheel. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t sit there and pretend that it was okay. That mom and dad were coming. That she wasn’t a shadow of who she was.
So she turned the car. She couldn’t and she wouldn’t. Not this time. She left her phone on as she turned to the only place she knew she could sit there and drink in peace.
Ironically the Church was the last place Lilith would be. After all if she had a soul she’d sold it a long time ago. There was no moral weight to her anymore. Nothing the man in the sky could do to save her. She was damned, and with the whiskey bottle she held in her hand she wondered if she could have stopped it.
She looked at the phone and wondered how long it would be until someone tried to tell her to do the right thing.
It was almost funny to her. The right thing after all wasn’t who she was. Looking up at the stain glass she wondered what she’d done to make herself like this.
Atticus had to request the Christmas together - now that he had reconnected with Lilith. The past three Christmases had been spent with the meagre college friends and acquaintances that like him, didn’t have anywhere else to go for the holiday. Every year they had done a secret santa, limiting the purchases to five dollars each due to their lack of funds and spent whatever was left on as much alcohol as they could get their hands in. The second Christmas one of the international students had ended up in hospital with alcohol poisoning and never returned to college - the bills had wiped out all her money.
But now he had Lilith and Damsel again, and while there would be no parents he still had his family for once. Perhaps it didn’t affect him as much as it should have - perhaps it was an affect of having spent the last three years without them anyway. Lilith hadn’t wanted to do it, he could sense it. She had talked about spending it somewhere else off the island, but he had begged her not to go, to spend it with him and Damsel and Lottie instead.
The time for her arranged arrival had come and gone though, but Atticus had given her the benefit of the doubt. He had finished up with dinner and set it on the table and waited. Waited until it had gone cold before he decided that she had run instead - after all, it was what his sister did best. Fetching his keys and coat he held his phone in his hand as he took a last look at the meal on the table before he walked out the door. Pressing her name he raised the phone to his ear as he walked down to the carpark. It was ringing at least, that was a good sign. Now just to see if she answered.
prinsessa-lottie:
“Ah,”
Head tilting from him then, exposing her throat to him without a second thought, Lottie curled her fingers in his hair. Free hand falling beside her head then, she pressed the inside of her own wrist to her fangs after a moment. She wanted to bite down then, pull at herself to keep from pulling at him like she wanted to.
“Atticus, maybe, uhm, I think you might want to-to skip part of that?”
He could feel the tensing of her jaw as he pressed his lips against the crevice between her jaw and ear. Pulling back he saw the way she had her wrist pressed against her mouth, his brows furrowing before he sat back up, his hips resting against hers.
“You’re hungry?” It came out slightly more like a statement than a question and he stayed perched where he was, looking down at her deep in the thought. Then he placed his arms either side of her head and leant in a little. “You would never drain me, Lottie, I believe that. You don’t have to suffer so.”
It was an offer and he tilted his head slightly, showing her the smooth of his skin.
prinsessa-lottie:
Panting still, wide eyed at him, Charlotta’s voice was soft from both her breathless rush and affection. As Atticus pushed away from her, the hand on his back swept up, nails scratching softly at the back of his head before she started to play with his hair idly. She returned his grin though, thumb curving out to trace along the bottom hinge of his jaw.
“Well,” Spoken softly, grinning still, she tilted her head at him a little where she lay sprawled beneath him and she arched up, pressing her mouth to his as she spoke. “Can’t say no to certainty.”
Just as quickly, Lottie fell back to watch him through her lashes. Her smile softened, and the hunger in his belly pulled her fangs from within her gums, dimpling deep on her bottom lip. She could ignore it though, the quiet rumbling that surely he could hear, and instead, her thumb slid softly down his throat.
“You’re beautiful.”
“No, can’t say no to that at all. Especially when I’m going to cook for you and then make love to you. Not necessarily in that order,” he commented. It was crazy the way she ignited every inch of him, even from something as simple as toying with his hair.
He quelled himself though, in this moment content to simply lay on her and watch her as her fingertips danced over his flesh, causing goosebumps to erupt wherever she touched. Atticus could hear her hunger - not sure whether it was for him, his blood, or food, but it didn’t scare him. Indeed most of the time he even forgot she was a vampire.
“Not as beautiful as you,” he murmured back, leaning in to place a gentle kiss on her jawline.
prinsessa-lottie:
“Work is good, maybe you can scare Louise into doing her job. Mister lawyer, fancy pressed suits.”
Mouth pressing to his temple, grinning softly, she overbalanced the both of them then. Tipping backward, wide eyed and startled for a moment, the breath rushed out of her lungs as the both of them fell back onto the couch. Familiarity didn’t take away from the weight of him though, the solid heavy of his muscles, and as she caught him between her legs Lottie gasped, head tipping away from him.
Groaning, heaving a little, a breathless laugh pulled at her throat. Nails soothing along his back in apology then from where they’d dug into his shoulder, Lottie took a deep breath despite the crush of him on her chest.
“O-oh? I’m stayin’ the night now, Mister Thompson?”
“What? Threaten her with a lawsuit if she doesn’t do her job?” he questioned, finally able to find some humour in himself again. Although admittedly it was sometimes entertaining walking in to find the young attendant slouched behind the counter tappy away on her phone.
The kiss was sweet, but the next thing Atticus knew he was pitching forward with her, arms scrabbling to try and stop himself. It was useless though as they crashed down in the couch and he ended up sprawled out on top of her. It almost took the breath out of him and he let out a small gasp, only noticing the dull pain in his shoulder when Lottie fan her fingers over it. When he had finally collected himself, he tried to ease the weight off his girlfriend. Then, he grinned at her.
“Yes you certainly are.”
prinsessa-lottie:
His cry of her name had her bobbling in place, staring at him with wide eyes. She didn’t understand his panic then, the startled way that he was watching her, and it took a moment to catch up.
“What are yo-oh! Oh, Atti, no-no sarcasm, that was sarcasm at a really horrible time for sarcasm. Leslie would never hurt me, or-or throw me or make me cry on purpose, okay?”
She’d forgotten then, how much Atticus didn’t know about her family, and she pouted, exasperated with herself. He had started to sag against her then, and Lottie shifted to that she could take his weight if he leaned on her. Nails scratching gently up his arm to his shoulder, kneading at the tension there, she gave him a smile.
“Dad won’t hurt them, he has a few greenhouses on the property. But I’ll stay, okay? I didn’t really want to go anywhere anyway, and you can…well, you can still surprise me, just lets keep it away from my fathers house?”
With her words Atticus raised his arm, placing a hand on her cheek and cupping it. He loved the vampire and today’s events had only solidified that. His eyes searched her expression for a few moments, before he nodded. “Okay, but still, I’d prefer it if you stayed here so you don’t have to see how angry he is. Plus, I could really do with your comfort right now.”
He let his hand drop and instead moved it to clasp hers in it, bringing it to his lips and kissing her fingertips. Then she was shifting and he was leaning into her, letting his eyes drift shut as she kneaded the tension away. How calming Lottie was to him.
“Deal. I’ll only ever surprise you at work, or back here. And you can see the flowers tomorrow.”
