On May 11, 1960. Adolf Eichmann was captured in Argentina and flown to Israel.
On May 23, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion announced to the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) that Eichmann had been caught and would stand trial in Jerusalem.
*Eichmann getting his arrest warrant prolonged.
For his stay in Israel he was kept in 3 prisons :
Camp Iyyar (“Iyar Base”) at Yagur near Haifa.
*for the first months during his interrogation
An improvised cell inside Beit Ha’am (culture center)
* in order so he could be walked straight into the courtroom each morning.
Central Prison in Ramla ("ayalon")
* until his execution. not to be confused with the city “Ramallah” in Palestine. Ramla is in Israel.
*Eichmann walking outside of "Ayalon" prison, Ramla.
Eichmann’s daily routine :
waking up, showering and dressing by season appropriate clothing, he was given an electrical shaver which was taken away after use.
Breakfast in the cell (bread, cheese, hard-boiled egg, vegetables/fruit). Food came from the guards’ own rations to prevent poisoning; a shift officer plated and delivered it. He often replied “Danke schön”.
Guard Amram Lusky recalled: " 'Eichmann especially liked mayonnaise. On Passover he asked, ‘What is this?’ We told him, ‘Matzah.’ He looked — and ate.' „
After breakfast, he was examined by his personal doctor, Dr. Zvi Wolstein; who he very much liked to talked to about many topics, from his early childhood to his millitery service. Dr. Wolstein was the only one that was permitted to converse with Eichmann outside of the interrogation room.
Dr.Wolstein : "Outwardly, he appeared as someone who didn’t care, but in truth, deep inside, he took everything to heart. He was emotionally bound to me. If one day I didn’t arrive , he asked me what was wrong, he would feel compelled to chase after me until I told him."
*Left picture: Eichmann is eating breakfast. Right: getting medically examined.
Depending on the weather he was allowed a 30 minute outdoor walk / exercise time . During the hours after Eichmann was interrogated for several hours \ meeting with his defense attorney.
Lunch (meat + potatoes/rice).
In the afternoon he was reading & writing books/papers in German. Reading glasses were issued only while reading and removed immediately after due to them being made out of glass and not plastic.
One time a guard found he was fond and enjoyed a book about whales, another time he was found drawing butterflies and flowers after a court session.
*sadly the drawings are probably destroyed or in a private archives.
*Eichmann with his books + him reading.
Bedtime. Light left on all night; a guard watched him even while he slept.
Some of the nights his personal doctor had to tend to him.
"the fact my family members died in the holocaust made it very hard for me (...) after that i got used to him. i used to sit next to him multiple nights in a row when he felt bad, the police preffered ill sit next to him at night and hold his hand"
The guards chosen to "look after" Eichmann were carefully hand picked from the Israel Police and Prison Service. They formed a dedicated security unit . In total, the inner core consisted of 22 trusted guards who had direct contact with Eichmann . These men were all experienced personnel having military or Border Police (Magav) backgrounds before joining the prison service and were considered disciplined and reliable.
Higher-ranking officers handled planning and oversight. The specialized guard force code named “Force A” , numbered 37 officers and men in total .
At the time, many Israeli police and prison staff were Holocaust survivors or had lost family in the genocide. To avoid any conflict of interest or emotional eruption, selectors excluded guards of European (Ashkenazi) origin, since Ashkenazi Jews were those most directly scarred by the Holocaust .
Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion himself insisted:
Only Sephardic (Middle Eastern/North African origin) Jewish guards be assigned to Eichmann’s wing, fearing that Ashkenazi guards “whose families were among the millions sent to their deaths by Eichmann would try to harm him” if given the chance .
*Holocaust survivor staff were not even allowed on the cell block floor where Eichmann was held . Some sources say the guards had to be single but I couldn't find a reason for this.

Eichmann was kept under tightly controlled yet somewhat humane conditions,
unlike in Nuremberg; which allowed no appeals, "allowed" Görings' suicide, and botched hangings, leaving some of the prisoners in a slow and agonizing death.
- Eichmann gained 7.5 kgs (16.5lbs) in prison.
- He had a meltdown that was considered a suicide attempt; he kept hitting his head against a wall until his doctor arrived.
- The house-shoes he wore are called "Kipi shoes" which are still sold to this day!
- Eichmann also kept a diary in prison. The diary is classified and will not be published or shown to the public because he specified this in his will.
