An AU of Steven Universe where Rose and Pink Diamond are 2 different people!

Headcanon:

Blue Diamond used to be a very different person prior to Pink because her only other role models were Yellow and White, whose standards she felt she had to uphold.

Deep inside, Blue was more like Pink, which was why she was so close to her more than anyone else, and was absolutely devastated when Pink was gone because it also felt like she lost a part of herself.

It's the reason why she wanted to preserve everything related to Pink instead of wanting to get rid of them and move on.

SU having a whole-ass episode with the moral of 'you know sometimes you and your friends will have different feelings about the same piece of fiction and that's fine, don't get too worked up over it' hits different after learning how the internet treated this show while it was running.

so stevens flaws coming to light are:

Always trying to “fix” everyone to the point where he’s pushy and intrusive and even controlling

Aggressively hides his own feelings to the point of exploding...he martyrs in the worst way

Is so stubbornly bent on leaving the past behind him that he gets angry when its brought up again

Is starting to not truly care about people’s wellbeing and really only cares about getting the problems (in relation to the past) out of the way. the human connection and kindness he used to have has been replaced by something very impersonal and task focused

Big ego—something he’s definitely always had tbh. That goes from assuming everything is his responsibility to assuming he can just make it better. now he’s assuming he knows better than others, that he knows what’s best for others, etc.

((Edit: Whats great is that most of these things arent new. Theyre very much his normal personality flaws set on maximum because of his trauma and it feels very natural. Considering other characters have gotten this type of development with steven acting as mostly a static character that others bounce off of, its very rewarding to finally have steven get this.))

EDITEDIT: i realize thanks to @quixocalypse that the way i explained Big Ego may be interpreted as cockiness, superiority, etc. I meant more along the lines of a messed up ego identity that can’t balance his need to be “himself” and his need to please and help others, resulting in him thinking he needs to solve the world’s problems. and because of many intermingling factors with his horrible and fluctuating self worth it is manifesting in ways i listed. im not demonizing this sweet child i was just analyzing for the purpose of the show’s premise of “steven has to work out his own issues” and me saying “okay and what are those issues being established...”

wow I’m really glad Pearl finally has a girlfriend

Just noticed something in Rose Buds. Steven is obsessed with trying to find a new place to put his mom’s picture. He remarks that after everything that happened he doesn’t want her “hanging” over them anymore. 

Obviously, this isn’t just about the painting, but Steven trying to figure out what to do with this “perfect image” of his mother and his mixed feelings about her. 

Amethyst then remarks “I’m telling you man, it’s not the placement, it’s the frame.” It seems like a small silly comment, which is then quickly interrupted by the arrival of the Zoomans. But seeing the continued use of Rose’s painting throughout the show and specifically this episode, I wonder if the Crew is actually saying it’s about the framing. 

Steven is still not dealing with his complicated feelings about his mom. He continues to act like he’s fine and to ignore what he’s really feeling, bottling up his anger, hurt and confusion, as if ignoring the past will allow him to move on. 

But, in reality he needs to face his feelings towards his mom and be honest with them. He needs to reframe how he thinks about her and sees her, not just this perfect image that has hung over him forever or a list of terrible things she’s done. He can’t change that Rose was his mother and that she is part of him, but he needs to reckon with all his feelings, however complicated or contradictory, so he can accept what has happened, how they affect him and who he is, and actually move forward.
