What costumes do you buy at Halloween? Frankenstein costumes.
Frankenstein's monster - although he wasn't a monster, he was a creature. So most people are wrong - they usually are.
Augustus didn’t want her to be right. He wished she’d say something he could disagree with - something that in his mind didn’t make sense. But Audrey telling him that it was Andreas he should apologise to was intrinsically correct, no matter how much he didn’t want it to be. It was one thing admitting he was wrong to her, but a whole other thing to say it to someone else. He wasn’t sure why that was, but he felt it nonetheless. Somehow he trusted Audrey, as if his confession was something sacred not to be given to untrustworthy hands. He envied those who could tell everyone how they felt - and more so, why they felt it. Still, he knew he had to do it. Not only for Audrey, or even Andreas - but also for himself. He gave a few nods in reply, his way of agreeing to her instructions.
As her eyes finally met his, it hit Augustus just how much he wanted to know everything about the girl. Sure, he felt he knew her character - and that combined with a few facts she shared in small talk gave him a little insight. But still, meeting those eyes was like getting to read the first few pages of potentially the best novel you’ve ever read - only to have the book shut each time she blinked. He wanted to know everything about her, the darkest parts she even kept from herself. But more so, he wanted her to tell him. And he’d wait forever for just a paragraph.
She came closer and before Gus could make sense of it he felt her hand on his shirt. An almost hint of a smile peeked out at the idea that she didn’t want him to go. But then once again that word came out, ‘mistake’. His thoughts were brought back to the last time he heard her say it, after she kissed him. Now he understood why they’d left her lips that night.
"You should make mistakes more often." Gus replied, the smile almost unnoticeably still lurking on one corner of his mouth. Before he fully registered his actions he found his fingers gently tugging her hair behind her ear as he leaned down to meet her lips with his own. But it wasn’t a mistake at all.
There was something strange about his expression, she tried to figure out what it was he was thinking, green eyes catching the ghost of a smile on his lips, but not knowing what it was doing there until she felt his fingers behind her ear, lips pressed against her own. She'd never spent those awkward teenage years fumbling in the closet during a game of seven minutes of heaven or read one of Cosmo's 'how to kiss' articles, there was a brief moment of panic that hit her, without the alcohol to dull her doubts, but they were soon forgotten as she felt herself leaning into him, her hands making their way to the back of his neck, stretching up onto her toes to be closer to him. There was something intoxicating about kissing him, without the sharp tang of alcohol to mask the true effect, her body molding against his.
Given that one of them was in need of air, she pulled away from him, stepping backwards to try and gain some clarity. Without him to distract her, she was left with the deafening fact that she was definitely an awful friend, if this was a sign of anything it was that she was one of the very worst friends ever to grace the earth, at least to Andreas. To Augustus she was- well, she wasn't sure where she stood with him.
"You'll tell him you're sorry. Being Andreas, he'll forgive you- but you'll make sure that you deserve it. You'll bring him breakfast or carry his books, something. You're going to make it up to him." She found herself nodding along with her own words, with things seeming more manageable once she had said them out loud. She didn't want words, words weren't going to make Andreas feel any better, actions were what had gotten Augustus into the that position and they were what would get him out of it, she was certain of that. She kept her eyes on him, her expression softening the moment their eyes made contact.
"Please?" She doubted he would turn her down, because she knew that he wasn't the person he was trying to pretend to be - and if he was, he'd learn not to. Closing the gap between them, she pressed her lips to his once more, without any guilt.
Frankenstein’s not the name of the monster?
Victor Frankenstein is the name of the doctor - how do you not know that?
I would, and I did. Name one good thing about this place.
Not being murdered for our species?
Exactly. And that’s just another reason why this island is a complete hellhole.
I wouldn't go that far...
I like cold weather so much better than warm weather. I wish it was cold every day.
I agree, it's far too humid when we're surrounded by the sea.
He thought about her question. Words began to formulate in his mind, but none quite finding the bravery to make their way to his mouth. Painfully, he brought his eyes back to her. It wasn’t meant to go this way, fights weren’t meant to be about these sort of things. But letting her know he wasn’t happy with what he’d done, not happy with himself, well that was letting her in further than anyone had gone. She’d leave eventually. That’s what everyone did. So if this was their final conversation, then Augustus knew he might as well be truthful. A part of him wanted to tell her the worst things imaginable - that he did it to hurt her, that he did out of pure hatred. Maybe then the goodbye would be final and she’d avoid him. That way she wouldn’t get hurt. But Audrey deserved the truth, it was all that he had left to give her.
A smile cracked, one of sadness as his shoulders rolled in a shrug. It disappeared as soon as he opened his mouth.
"Why am I sorry?” Augustus repeated, the last word feeling foreign and rigid. “I’m sorry that you didn’t find out from me. That I wasn’t the one who came to you and told you, who apologised. I’m sorry that you got involved with me and I’m sorry he got hurt. I’m sorry that I hurt you and I’m sorry I hurt him.” His words rambled out before he could make sense of them, but he meant every single one with more sincerity than he’d ever felt before. Somehow they were true, he wasn’t just concerned about Audrey’s feelings in this situation - and that’s what scared him the most. Feelings made things complicated. He took one more look at her - his favourite pair of sea green eyes, before he realised maybe he had to leave before she said goodbye to him. Maybe then he had a chance of surviving. Anything more than barely breathing seemed already out of the question.
Audrey learnt from a very young age that emotions wouldn't lead you to anything but pain and danger, that the only true ally was logic once it came down to it, but sometimes it was hard to listen to common sense. There was something admirable about someone who could lay their thoughts out infront of them, but it left her at a disadvantage. She wasn't prepared to do the same, to tell him how his words affected her or what sentiments she returned, none of it truly mattered anyway. Even if she was to admit to him, to herself, that there may be a fondness for the vampire in her heart, she couldn't act on it given his attack on Andreas. True enough, she wasn't skilled at keeping friends, but she knew enough to be aware of the fact that a friend would never admit anything but loathing towards their attacker. Which should make things simple, but instead she found herself cursing the fact that she had to try and do the right thing. She'd never wanted to be stupid and illogical until she met Augustus.
"You should tell him that." It wasn't what she thought she'd say, but it was the only thing that made any sense given the moment. Andreas was forgiving, they both knew that, even if she didn't think it should be forgotten, it should definitely be understood.
She could tell that he was thinking of an escape, a witty line to delay his words or an excuse to brush past her and disappear in the labyrinth of hallways but she didn't want that, she knew that much at least. She was grateful to him for being honest, something she didn't see herself ever being able to do because of the fear that truth brought anew. She finally settled her gaze on his, blue meeting green, she wanted to be able to say that she had lived a life without regrets, but that would be impossible. At nineteen she had already made too many mistakes to count, her nights were tormented with things she'd done that she shouldn't have and things she hadn't done that she should have. In light of which, she decidedly chose not to make the same mistake again. She walked towards him, stopping infronf of him so that he couldn't just leave without a word, resting a hand on his chest.
"Thank you - and I'm sorry too, for... mistakes made."
Why? Did something happen? Was it serious?
Nothing happened, I was just wondering.
Maybe not. This place is old after all.
I'm sure they could've updated the place.
No, your general attitude. You need to chill the fuck out.
Is that so? How would you recommend I start?
Who doesn’t love oral sex and beef but some stuck up boring chick? Also, had sex once. Get your facts right.
'Stuck up boring chick'? Oh, that's very deductive of you. I made my assumption based on a trait of your species, what's yours based off of? My distaste for 'steak and blowjob day'?
Did I hit a nerve?
Oh yes. I'm oh so very triggered by being called boring by a nymphomaniac who declares his love for oral sex and beef. You get me.
Funny, I’ve been here a while too.
Great. That's great.
You’re boring.
McQueen? Cool. So, how long have you been here?
A while. You?
Wait– I didn’t quite catch your name, I’m Teddy.
Teddy? Cute. Audrey McQueen.
