      “i’ve learned that i cannot always hide what i do. not that i’m trying to.” august had known when he had to taken the job as high warlock that his movements would be scrutinized but he had never tried to hide it. and would it be surprising that a leader of the downworld would meet with leo especially considering everything that had been happening as of late, when it was revealed that the other was behind this all. he just wondered why markus was asking of this and what his intentions were. “leo is complicated one. despite it all, what has happened, what has been seen, he made it clear his intentions are against the clave. that i know.”

      “i do come from a time of knights and the rebirth of people and culture, it’s to be expected i suppose.” though he took the teasing in stride, he was still curious about markus’ visit, often everyone had their own reasoning, their own purpose, especially those as old as he was. he was remained ever the pleasant host, but with his own level of healthy skepticism. “i see, i’m not surprised that it was noticed. and there is no point in saying otherwise, i did.”

the  fire  was  out  before eve stood a chance to extinguish it . an uneasy sigh  ,  red cylinder dropped  !  fingers pushing against the bridge of her nose in relative frustration  &  worry . her arms then snaked around herself  ,  turning to look at the older of the two .  “  i’d rather just  …  not try that again . i feel like i’m going to set this whole place on fire  .  i - if that’s okay .  ”

       he didn’t flinch when the cylinder dropped to the ground and watched her reaction after he had so easily put the fire out. as she turned toward him, he dared to put the gentlest of hand on her shoulder. “fire was my first. i accidentally almost burned down my stepfather’s business and our home once. you won’t, i’d stop it. but if you wish to try something else, we can.”

the merprincess hummed at the warlock’s words, it wasn’t that hard to imagine how busy he must have been and still be with everything going on, and that only made her all that much more glad that he was willing to hear her. she chuckled then, the nickname making a small smile start to spread across her face, the tension she had been feeling till then starting to slowly fade away. ❝ i was wondering if you could help me with a protection spell. ❞ her smile turning just a little more softer when she reached for the necklace secured in her pocket, she still had to give it back to amara, and she was planning on doing so but before that she wanted to be sure that nothing more was going to happen to her, and well, her own magic wasn’t much of help on that. letting it carefully dangle from her fingers, natalia looked up at august. ❝ on this. it’s quite important. ❞

      the high warlock could tell that something was bothering the merprincess and he wondered what it was that could upset her so. it did make her a bit worried for her but he was patient and he would wait for her to share whatever she wished about it. he knew when to push and when to not so much push. even though he was quite busy, he would always make time for her if she needed it. “a protection spell? hmm, i’m quite adept at them so i’m sure i can help you on whatever it is need a protection spell put on. come closer to table please.” the table itself was a bit messy especially since he had a plethora of items, ingredients, and books strewn about it. he watched as she pulled out a necklace with a shell on the end of it. it made sense, especially considering how much mers loved the sea aesthetic that they usually touted in their appearance. “you want it on the pendant of the necklace, or the whole necklace itself? because i can do either. do you intend this to be given to someone important to you?”

     “ yeah … i mean, it wasn’t too much of a bother for me, i didn’t practically live at the institute anyway but a lot had to re-locate after what leo pulled. ” she sighed, shoulders falling. “ umm, it’s me, lukas, jason, amara and jade for now. ” he answered his question before raising her eyebrows. “ august ? i heard something about leaders losing their powers … you weren’t effected ? ”

      “that’s good to know, having a place outside of the institute is a smart choice considering things that could happen, for example now.” he knew that for most shadowhunters it was just easier to live at the institute, but having a place to escape to was better. “that quite a bit of you in one apartment, but i assume it’s big enough.” august paused, thinking for a second how to answer her question without giving away his recent allegiance. “i was actually... i found a way to get them back though.”

the moment august snapped his fingers and the door opened for him, markus walked into the place as if he’d been there a thousand times before, a certain confidence in his stride that denied the concerns clouding his mind. ❝ my dear august, ❞ he purred, head tilting to the side as he came to a stop in front of the high warlock. ❝ it’s nothing personal, of course. i assumed you would be way too busy to deal with the likes of me. ❞

      august puts down a book he was flipping through, some demonic tome or another but it’s unimportant to him right now. it wasn’t giving him the information he needed anyways. “markus, markus.” he shook his head in disappointment, but his tone was congenial. “i’m the high warlock, that means i have time for every warlock that resides in my city, even if its just for a short time. to what do i owe the pleasure of this visit?”

      august had decided that the best way for eve to learn how to use her magic was easy stuff, lighting a candle for example. it should have been relatively easy, but as he gazed up from his book when he heard her cry out, a larger fire greeted his gaze. he stood up, snapping his fingers to douse the fire as she used the fire extinguisher. “ nonsense. maybe fire just isn’t your natural element as it was for me. every warlock has something that comes naturally to them first. ”

hey everyone, i know i disappeared again, i had to put myself on hiatus for the weekend, since i have been spending it with my boyfriend and then the snow kind of kept me here for an extra day and then i have to work a long shift tomorrow, but i’ll be back when i can in a day or so.

     august had half a mind to force jason to travel only by portal for at least a week to see if it would finally do away with the obvious wave of nausea that the werewolf felt every time he went through one. probably not though, weak stomach. august let out a laugh at jason’s reaction to to his words, oh how he loved to fluster him. “you heard me correctly. a love nest.” he had been in a few of his own during his time, he understood the appeal of staying with a lover, tucked away and not coming out for days. tilting his head, “i had a hunch, and judging by your reaction and the pink color of your cheeks, i’m correct.”

      “no one deserves homelessness.” in the past there had been times when he was younger, he hadn’t been sure if he would have a roof over his head. he didn’t worry about that now, but he worried for others. “oh? how many of you are living that apartment now?” he shrugged, “i’m perfectly fine and all that. never been better.”

     listening to his ally, leo hummed softly, taking a sip of his drink with a calm expression on his face. watching the people walk around, each one probably on a task, it was safe to say that the shadowhunter was quite content in this state. “ that is the thing, my friend. ” he said, gaze finally turning to august who was seemingly lost on the one of a kind spell book leo had given august access to. “ you know them better than i do, so your word on my warlocks are to be taken seriously. ” a small grin, not malicious this time but simply content, appearing on his face, he then gently patted on the warlock’s shoulder once. “ so, your call. ”

     august had looked at many a magical texts in his time, some of which he owned himself hidden away in the bookshelves of his office in his loft. there were others in the spiral labyrinth that he had read as well but he couldn’t take such books out. this text no doubt should have been there but instead had been hidden by shadowhunters. as soon as leo had made it known to his followers that august was with them, they had accepted his judgement and leadership. he was high warlock after all, it meant something. “they’ve accepted my orders, i am not high warlock for nothing. my kind are powerful, but over time we are not without our own limits.” there had been times in his life where he had overworked his magic and he tried not to do so in case of an emergency. “should we focus another one on the other leaders or simply at random?”

      the portal opened into his loft, not the first time the werewolf had asked to come over and august had popped a portal in lukas’ living room to get him here quickly. he titled his head as he looked at the werewolf on the floor, “oh come now, you should used to be portals by now jason.” he shook his head in exasperation. “where have you been hiding, a little love nest with lukas perhaps?” @jasonfumero
