In general another pet peeve of mine about whitewashing is how we're expected to believe that it was not visible to the artist.

Like, if it's maybe a tad bit lighter? Okay. I usually let that slide. God knows my mobile and my monitor look completely different, solutions ineffective so far. Maybe you're still learning skin tone vs background. Okay. I don't get upset at that.

But you had to go all the way to the other side of the color wheel for some of these whitewashings and you're gonna look me in my Black ass eyeballs and tell me you "couldn't tell". 😐 Especially when all the other colors are the exact same 😐 It's almost insulting lmao like do you really think I'm stupid enough to go for that, or are we all just socialized into knowing I'll be forced to 🤣

One thing I've noticed when reading romance novels is that authors (and readers) seem far more comfortable with sexual violence and sexual assault within (or prior to) a romantic relationship than non-sexual violence.

The male main character punching or slapping the female character across the face would be almost unimaginable in the vast majority of romance novels, but nonconsenual spanking and forced kissing or groping are not particularly uncommon, including prior to the characters being in a relationship.

(This is not unique to M/F stories, though when it does appear in M/F stories it is almost always the male love interest character committing the sexual violence/sexual assault. This appears in M/M stories as well, though to a lesser degree, and seems to be far rarer in F/F stories.)

One of the things I find frustrating in female-dominated writing spaces (like the romance publishing space) is the way in which (generally white) women will shut down criticism of the space or the content being produced by calling on the fact that it's a female-dominated space as a shield.

There is a response that basically goes "this is women finally being able to openly express their sexuality and their voice and you're just trying to silence them."

And there are people, obviously, who are are trying to do that--but this same response is often given not only to conservatives trying to censor "pornography" but also people in marginalized communities talking about problems within these writing spaces or ways that they are made to be unwelcome.

It's an impulse I totally understand, but it's also really frustrating to see (generally cis/white) women using their marginalization as a women to insulate themselves from criticism or act as though being a woman makes them incapable of racism, ableism, homophobia, ace/arophobia, transphobia, or even sexism.

If you're able to understand how men's portrayals of women can be disrespectful of or harmful to women, you should also be able to understand how your portrayals of marginalized communities (particularly those you are not a part of) can be similarly disrespectful or or harmful to those communities, and if you're able to understand how it harms women to be unwelcome in writing spaces run by men, you should also be able to understand how it harms other marginalized communities to be unwelcome in writing spaces you run.
