“Carl” is the center panel of a collaboration triptych by @karlkoett, @austinparkhill and @pettibonedavid. The Sanarov brothers are from a Russian Old Believer village outside of Homer, Alaska. First and foremost, the brothers identify by their religion, seeking to carry on the traditions of their ancestors as long as possible. Split from the Russian Orthodox church, their traditions reflect an earlier, more “pure” time in the church’s history. The brothers are fishermen by trade and family tradition, hauling in salmon and halibut from their private boats which provides income and fish to feed to their family. When home, the Sanarovs are impressively skilled hockey players with sturdy reputations and hearty smiles around the rink. I’ve been quite excited to share this with you. This one felt significant, start to finish. An important, official start to a new series that continues to consider human impact on this place we call home.

Angela, my model, is a longtime friend from Utqiaġvik, Alaska. She is Iñupiaq. We chose to celebrate her pregnancy with a painting, set atop #arctic #seaice. The present and the future and weighty things, worthy of our action.
