A Walk in the Park ||Austin+Dana||
Was it instinct or maybe the loud voice and recognition of her name that got her nearly woken up? Ā She found herself gasping, jumping up, hands almost flying to the gun hooked upon it. Ā She blinked fast as she looked over to the boy before her, his wide eyes and light hair easily recognizable. Ā Her chest heaved from the shock of it all. Ā She was definitely letting herself slip. Ā Her lack of sleep was causing her instincts to be all over the place and she wasnāt sure if she was liking it. Ā She groaned, placing a hand upon her forehead as she lightly shook her head. Ā āDamn, Austinā¦.sorry I just..ā, she stopped giving him a sheepish grin as she shrugged. Ā āIāve been a little out of it latelyā¦as you can tellā, she waved her hand in a quick gesture as she nearly rolled her eyes at herself. Ā It was embarrassing to say the least. Ā "You though!", she grinned, as she neared the younger boy and quickly pulled him into a tight hug. Ā When she had first started dating James, she shot up a quick friendship with the younger brother. Ā It was one of the few things she didnāt want to let go of when she ended things. Ā But time was a different story and the freedom to go around and see people was starting to take its hold. Ā Hell, she had barely seen Renee in a month it felt like! Ā She patted his back lightly and pulled back, still pasting on the sheepish grin. Ā āWonāt kill me for almost shooting ya, right?ā Ā She laughed and rubbed the back of her neck. Ā āHowāve you been doing, buddy? Ā Havenāt seen you in a whileā¦and yeah, yeah I know thatās my own fault andā¦Iām going to try to change that, promise!ā Ā
"Hey, it's alright. You didn't shoot me, so that's the cool part."Ā He laughed and smiled as she rolled her eyes. He was already over it, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to laugh a little, as much as she seemed just tired and out of it. He was glad to see her though, she had always been a good friend, treating him like a little brother even after her and her and James had finished dating.Ā
As she pulled him into a tight hug he hugged her back, patting her back and laughed. He was the same person she knew, but he had grown up, filled out, and had gotten his independence over the years. "It's so good to see you!! Seems like forever." He chuckled and as she pulled back and looked at him, he rose a brow. "I dunno....the jury's still out on that one."Ā He winked and then chuckled. "Nah, no hard feelings, Dana."Ā
Shrugging he sat down on the bench, looking to her as she did as well. "Everything's going alright. Still in school. Got a job though!"Ā He grinned at her excitedly. "Gio's bowling alley. The owner's a good guy and I get as much soda as I can handle."Ā He rubbed his nose, grinning broadly. "Which is alright by me. How about you? Don't worry about it, I know life gets busy, but you and me need to catch up. I'm in no hurry to get back to the dorm."Ā
It's saturday night and the bowling alley is hopping!
"Bumpers, huh? Well I wonāt ask for those," she laughed and looked around, "An ice water will do just fine. So do you get to bowl to or are you one the clock for awhile?"
Austin chuckled, taking a drink from his soda Ā and then hopping behind the counter, getting a glass and filling it with ice and water, handing it to her, his fingers brushing against hers for a moment. "I get to bowl, Merc's actually a pretty relaxed boss. I can pretty much do as I please but...I don't goof off that much."Ā
It's saturday night and the bowling alley is hopping!
"Sheāll show. Trust me⦠and when she does, Iāll be in the office."
"Are you up to something, Merc?"Ā
Finally
"You realize Iāll be drinking all night? Not so sure the sounds of a bowling alley is a good way to cure that."
"You're such a grump. I'll swing by your place with some hangover cures then."
It's saturday night and the bowling alley is hopping!
"Well thought I would come by and see the place. Though I canāt say Iāll do all that well. Bowling was never my strong suit."
He chuckled and then nodded. "Me neither, honestly. I need the..uh..little thingys on the lane otherwise I throw my bowling ball into the gutter every single time."Ā He laughed and sat on the counter, smiling at Ellie, licking his lips, not forgetting the kiss they had shared. "Would you like something to drink?"
Finally
"A day off tomorrow and I have zero plans of sleeping any time soon."
"Lucky you. I have a long shift tomorrow, but it's not too bad. You should come by."Ā
It's saturday night and the bowling alley is hopping!
So mister, is this where I get my fancy bowling shoes?
"Ellie! Oh uh..absolutely!"Ā Austin smiled broadly, a blush working over his cheeks. "It's great to see your face around here. Really livens the place up."Ā
It's saturday night and the bowling alley is hopping!
Kinda hoping to see Ellie here tonight.Ā
Festivities II Merc + Austin
Merc finished his burger and his beer and flagged down the waitress handing her a one hundred dollar bill and told her to keep the change. His gaze returned to Austin as he reached inside of his jacket pocket and brought out a check book with a new credit card and Austinās name on it.
"Iām equally as glad that youāre my friend, Austin. Here, consider this your signing bonus. I donāt care how much you spend, itās tied to my bank accounts⦠use it on your inventions. Use it on your girl, I donāt care what you do with it⦠as long as it makes you happy and keeps you happy with your workplace."
As he handed the waitress a hundred dollar bill he smiled as she ran back to the kitchen happily to share the good news. As Merc handed him a credit card, he fingered it in disbelief, wondering if Merc had made a mistake. He smiled broadly and shook his head. "Wow Merc...thank..thank you. You're..you're one of the best men i've met, honestly."Ā He fingered the card again, and sighed. "I'm going to get ellie some beautiful flowers."Ā
"I'm more than happy with my workplace. I love working at Gio's and my school life...and...wow, I realize that i'm just happier than i've been in a long time, honestly."
Festivities II Merc + Austin
Merc nodded through the whole mention of Ellison Fields. He knew that Austin could handle it and had total faith in the kid. He almost expected to see her hanging around the Bowling Alley here soon. His azure gaze suddenly softened as his friend spoke haltingly about his family.
Merc knew that sort of look and speech. That was his whole life⦠hiding what he did, what his father and grandfather did. āI get it⦠Iām sorry I asked. If it helps I canāt talk about any of my family Ā other than Nova or Iāll get them all put in prisonā¦ā
Austin didn't know what the future held, or even if Ellie would want to be wit him. He would just let things happen as they did, and if she wanted to be part of his life, then he'd be a happier man for it. As Merc's gaze softened, he was glad he didn't press the subject. After so many years, it still was a raw nerve that he tried his best to forget, but never really could.Ā
"No, it's ok, don't worry about it,"Ā Austin then nodded, finishing off his cigarette. "It's tough all around, honestly,"Ā Austin said taking a long drink of his soda. "That's why I'm glad I got friends like you, Merc."Ā
"Always here to help kid."
He looked into a bitĀ silverwareĀ and saw the smudge was gone. "Hey, you're the guy I bought the bear claw off. How are ya?"Ā
