There need to be spaces for women to heal and learn not just about themselves but about the land that is under us. Women need self-sustainable skills and the ability to trust the decisions they make.Â
I work as a Community Manager at a senior apartment complex and it is incredibly sweet how I have been adopted by 122 grandma’s and grandpa’s. They bring me sweets and drinks, a lady came in yesterday to ask us to put a hummingbird feeder up and left me an apple and a clementine, I guess as a trade? I have a headache today and so have been operating with my light off which has prompted every resident to ask if there’s a problem with the building. When they find out its just my broken brain they fall over themselves to take care of me.Â
A reframe from a spirit that’s helping me out today:Â
If you go to a burger joint and try to order a pizza, no matter how much you want a pizza, it ain’t gonna happen.Â
If you go to a person (or several) who’ve never been empathetic, reasonably selfless, or a good listener, and ask for them to empathize, consider you, and listen - no matter how much you want it, it’s not going to happen.Â
Railing about how they won’t give you the love and affection you want is about as silly as trying to get a pizza from a burger joint.Â
And if you’ve got no pizza joints nearby, you gotta learn to make your own if you want it that bad. Might not be the same thing but thems the breaks.Â
If you can’t get empathy and love from those around you, you gotta get really good at giving it to yourself. Might not feel the same but thems the breaks.Â
Most people practice magic for a while before they even start to care about really developing a solid understanding of it. That's fine. But when you decide you really want to be good at it, you need to understand.
Start by asking yourself:
What is magic? Define it.
How does magic work? Figure out where you think magic comes from, what you have to do to use it, and the role of tools.
What can magic do and not do? You need to know both.
These are the first fundamental questions that you need for mastery.
Now that I’m not at the grocery store, I’ll answer the questions so that you have some examples!
What is magic? I believe that magic is the intuitive manipulation of natural energies to achieve a predetermined result.Â
How does magic work? How much time do you have! It’s a lot like light hitting a prism. Light (energy) enters the prism (witch) which bends the light (working) and produces a visible rainbow (magic). There are different ways of pulling that energy into yourself (and different types of energy) as well as different ways of working that energy, which all produce different types of magic. But simply, I believe we are the catalyst. We also have the ability to use other catalysts, like sigils or poppets.
What can magic do and not do? I believe that magic is bound by natural law. It cannot do anything that is against nature. That’s why transfiguration doesn’t work - there is no natural mechanism for turning one thing into something else unrelated. As we say in my practice, you can’t turn a boar into a bear. But magic can do anything permissible in the natural world. That doesn’t mean in individual practitioner is capable of it, but magic isn’t bound by the individual.Â
It may sound silly, but a lot of practitioners really don’t spend much time on these kinds of questions. Learning magic is a lot like learning English as your first language in an American school: you’re taught the rules, but you’re not really taught why those rules are there or why they’re important. You end up with usable information, but you aren’t given the tools to interpret that information and build off of it.
As another example, does the average witch know why the moon is so important in witchcraft? I’ll give you a hint: What is moonlight?Â
Moonlight is reflected sunlight. The moon does not produce Her own light. Moonlight is energy, but it’s the diluted energy from the sun. That makes it easier for us to manage. The sun is the most powerful energy source in our solar system. That means it can be really difficult to harness and work with. The moon provides a gentler, more stable energy source.Â
For my part, I believe most of the energy we use for magic comes from the sun. All of the energy in plants comes from the sun. Humans and animals get energy from the sun. Every time you make moon water or charge a crystal under the full moon, that energy is coming from the sun. It’s just something that has been harnessed in a more easily usable way - a battery versus a lightning bolt. Or how collagen is broken down into usable proteins in the body.Â
Can you do witchcraft without that information? Absolutely! Does having that information mean that you can now do more witchcraft, that you can philosophize and expand? Absolutely!!
Does the moon also have additional significance to witchcraft beyond what I’ve just said? Absolutely!!! Should you go find it so that you can expand even further on your knowledge? Say it with me: ABSOLUTELY!!!!
the path of trying to find the balance between your personal life, work, obligations, personal relationships, healthy outlets, and then a dutiful worshiper is hard for a reason.Â
The ancient Greeks had not to worry about as much nonsense as we do. Their society was designed around worship. Do not worry or punish yourself over not being able to celebrate every single festival, or every single moon cycle or even have the mental capability to give a full chested prayer every day.Â
the world we are in is not designed for the beauty we are trying to recapture, but our faith and resilience in that, still finding time to whisper the gods name in joy and sorrow and pleading, that is enough to stand the time. And the Gods know it too.
My wife and I are looking for land now with the goal to purchase in a year but not more than 2. There will be room for other women to come and live as well as space to raise animals and grow our own food. So I wasn’t fully joking...
