Heylo! I wanted to ask about your experience post initiation if that's alright .i recently did a tarot reading and got told that to please spirits in order to begin a good working relationship, i must contemplate and be ready to be Changed. there were lots of signs that it could lead to feelings of isolation, and otherness but it will lead me deep into myself (sry if this is too long.) i want to know if u went through something similar, or something else, and is it worth it personally for you. I would also love some pointers as to what I'm supposed to contemplate about. I don't mind the isolation but maybe I'm not understanding some key aspect of it. anyway thank you and i love your blog it's an irreplaceable resource for me. :)
Hi :)
Spirit-lead initiation into witchcraft is a controversial topic, I think in part because it can be very uncomfortable to discuss.
I have been relatively open on my blog that my initiatory experience was extremely painful and required a level of sacrifice and transformation that I was too immature to comprehend at the beginning of the process. Even now it's not something I'm sure I could articulate.
For me it was a process that lasted the majority of a decade. I think this is a relatively average timeline - which I just bring up because I think it's useful to point out that if you are facing the same sort of thing that I faced, it's not just going to be over in a few weeks or months.
Was it worth it personally for me? I don't know. Right now, my answer is that I love who I am and I like my life, and I wouldn't be who I am or have this life if I didn't go through that process. I used to say I'd never do it again if I had the choice. Now, a few years after the fact, sometimes I say I'd do it again. Maybe in a decade I'll think it was worth it.
It's my belief that the sort of initiatory process I, and others, have gone through, isn't necessary for most people to form a good working relationship with the spirits.
I believe that if you have the choice, you should very, very carefully contemplate initiation and only agree to it after a prolonged period of reflection.
So, what's there to contemplate? I dunno. Otherness on the path to spirit-working was a major part of my trip, so if we are kindred, here's maybe something to contemplate:
You are a boulder. You are a very nice boulder in the wilderness. You're composed of many varieties of minerals and metals. You are a gorgeous boulder, glittering in the sunlight, hosting a unique map of inclusions and ore veins unlike any other boulder in the world.
You sit high up on a mountainside. A few meters behind you is a river. Below you is a dry valley.
The waters of the river are pressing up behind you. They rush past you, sweeping by, continuing their eternal circuit in the mountain-range, but rarely trickling into the dry valley below.
One day, you gain an interest - as some boulders do - in allowing some of the water to trickle past you into the valley below. The secrets of nature will allow you to sometimes let water to lap up over your sides, and through narrow crevices, to water the plants you find to be most beautiful, and provide drinking pools for the little animals you hold most dear.
Little by little, the valley beneath you begins to change as you apply yourself to learning the secrets of nature and letting the water flow past you.
After some time, the water begins to whisper in your ear. It appreciates your interest in its flow - it likes your focus on the river. A deal can be brokered:
The river will dissolve only some of the minerals and inclusions that run through you, creating hollow tunnels. Through these tunnels, the water can flow much more easily and rapidly.
But there are conditions.
The conditions are that whatever is washed away can never be returned. How could it? What force in the universe could restore the crystalline structure within you once the waters have carried it away?
And, the river chooses which inclusions will be removed. The river is very wise in these matters; it knows better than anyone how water can best flow through any boulder. It isn't up to you to choose what leaves, and it isn't up to you to choose the nature in which the water will flow through you.
Finally, if you use the secrets of nature to ever stop the flow of water through the new inclusions, you are at risk of crumbling away. The empty caverns within you will dry up and leave you empty in places that should be whole.
The river asks you to contemplate and return with an answer.
Of course it leads you deep into yourself. The river is going to run right through you.
Get reborn into the river of power, loser

I take special care of my bed. Because, as one of my wife's spirits once said, the bed is imbued with so much personal energy and so much a part of our most vulnerable moments that it becomes a poppet that influences the relationship itself. So I keep my bed warded and anointed. I keep the bedding clean and the pillows in good shape. I keep things nice and I try to make it a place that supports the loving, communicative marriage that I have and want to maintain.
Some of the magical care I use for my bed include:
Bells and amulets tied to the bed legs or bedposts.
Herbal powders that are sprinkled over the bed before vacuuming the mattress.
Oils and infusions added to detergent.
Blessed waters and oils to anoint the four corners of the bed.
Daily airing out or sunning out the room with specific attention to the bed.
Sprays and mists that can be used between cleansings and cleanings.
Beating the mattress with a besom or whisk. "Sweeping" under the bed with the same.
Spoken charms and bed blessings.
Many years ago, I used to include Sleep and Death in my evening prayers to Mother Night. This was when I favored Her Hellenic face, and in my adoration knew all the classic mentions of Nyx and all Her children.
Along the way I stopped doing that quite so much, not for lack of love of Them but because it did not sit well with me to offer prayers to deities I perceived as male. I also distanced myself from the Hellenic faces of these Aspects, as I felt uncomfortable being so tied to them while not being a Hellenic polytheist myself.
I think Iâve grown a bit since then, and as I am about to celebrate my 13th year as an ordained priestess I feel much more secure returning to that habit of offering love and prayers to those gods, the dearest sons of my cherished Goddess. Sure, I donât need to reach for Sleep and Death through the faces of Hypnos and Thanatos (and really, while I offer love to the spirit Thanatos he is not the primary aspect I associate with death). But Hypnos has always been precious to me and I feel a strong urge to rekindle our connection. I also feel less self conscious in privately indulging in my worship of the family of Nyx, so long as I make clear that my authority- such that it is in service- as clergy does not extend to Nyx as a Hellenic deity, and that I am only qualified as a priestess of Night as Night is understood in DĂ©a Noctism.
Resources for Sea Magic
Someone asked for some resources on sea magic, but I accidentally answered it publicly instead of privately, as requested. Sorry ><
So I deleted the ask and the username, and am just posting it publicly anyway.
I have a tag for [âsea magicâ] and one as well for [âwater magicâ] - anything I have will be in there. The practices, while similar, obviously have a different focus that can take the impact and how it is worked in different directions. Sea magic is a very specific branch of water magic that is well known and often practiced.
Here are a few resources on sea magic, not including spells or Iâd be here forever- this is all just informational stuff about sea magic.
I found my old list of resources on sea magic [here], but oh gods, it really needed updating - I mean, just look at the format!

I need to make something very clear about animism even though itâs likely nobody will listen, and that is that physical bodies are not separate from souls in any being with personhood. Human bodies are our souls and our souls are our human bodies. The riverâs souls are contained in the waters, sand, dirt, clay, and microorganisms that make up its body. Every single mirror of a plants body they might have is their souls, and their bodies are all of those souls mirrors. Every stuffed animal you call a friend has a soul, which is its body, marked by your love. There are so many other examples. Separation of soul and body of persons is not animism, itâs the spirit model.
Around the holidays I had the unique joy of meeting up with @windvexer in person while they were visiting my beloved New York City. Over sushi, dessert, and then just hanging out in their hotel lobby we had a wide ranging conversation about our practices, UPGs, etc. The conversation eventually drifted to comparing our spirit lead initiations. Chickenâs story is theirs to share, or not, as they choose. But Iâve been thinking a lot since that conversation about my own initiation and how it parallels another important story in my life.Â
When I was 15 I was a dancer and I was good, like competing at a national level. I was cast as Odette in my ballet schoolâs adaptation of Swan Lake. I practiced, and rehearsed, and trained all year long for the role. Then a month before recital weekend my family and I went on a weekend trip to Gettysburg. I also love history, and my dad and I had just read a book about the battle of Gettysburg together, so we clambered all over the battlefield. I tore a calf muscle doing this. I saw my usual doctor for injuries and wore a cast for three weeks, walked through rehearsals, took it easy. Once the cast was off a week before the recital I ramped up slowly, warmed up more than usual, stretched carefully, everything. But come recital weekend I danced my heart out and left everything on the stage. 3 weeks later I was diagnosed with CRPS in the leg I had injured. What does any of this have to do with my initiation? Everything, just bare with me.Â
My childhood mentor had been initiated by the spirits of her tradition, and she had spoken to me about the effect this had had on her. I had written an academic paper on initiatory spiritual traditions and the phenomena of initiation sickness. I knew, long before Oisin ever broached the topic with me, that a spirit lead initiation could wreck your life, that it would be trying in ways that were specifically designed to change you on a fundamental to suit the spirit's needs, and that undertaking one would have consequences I couldnât even begin to image. I also knew that dancing Swan Lake one week out of a cast could have disastrous results for my dance career. But I loved the music and choreography. I loved how I felt while I was dancing. So I danced. I was already in love with Oisin when he presented me with this trial. I loved learning from him, and working with him, and if there was something hard, even something impossible, that he needed me to do so that I could keep learning and working with him - it was no question.Â
I had no way of knowing when I was teenager waiting in the wings in my white leotard and feathered wig that I was about to dance my last ballet. That in less than a year I would start using a cane, or that I would one day swap the cane for a wheelchair, or any of the changes and accommodations that Iâve had to make in my life for my disability. I only knew the love. When I said yes to Oisin I couldnât have predicted how much it would break me when he killed my soul, dismembered it, and scattered the innumerable shreds across the Otherworlds. I could have imagined the amazing and terrifying things I saw and experienced on my journey to find those fragments and assemble myself - or what it was like to live without a complete soul in the meantime. And nothing could have prepared me for the permanent changes the whole process had wrought on my life: on my physical health, my mental health, the very fact that my spiritual oaths and promises must always come first for me. I only knew the love.Â
17 years after my diagnosis, and 13 after my initiation started, I look back at the choices that led to both and would make them both again, even knowing the consequences. These two choices, more than almost anything else in my life, have shaped who I am as an adult and I like that person. These choices came from the right place, both times. Not from ambition, greed, guilt, or fear, but love. And I canât ever regret what I did for love.
âNight, to ancient people, was not an âabsence of lightâ or a negative darkness, but a powerful source of energy and inspiration. At night the cosmos reveals herself in her vastness, the earth opens to moisture and germination under moonlight, and the magnetic serpentine current stirs itself in the underground watersâjust as the thick, snakey spray of stars, the Milky Way, winds across the night sky. Moon phases are a part of the great cosmic dance in which everything participates: the movement of the celestial bodies, the pulse of tides, the circulation of blood and sap in animals and plants. Observation of the night sky, of the stars, and especially of the moon, was the beginning of mathematics and science.â

Our Lady of Perpetual Help ChapletâHow to Pray It
I was studying my grandmotherâs rosary and realized that the center medal is Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
This prayer appeals to me as a dual faith folk Catholic as a plea to the divine female. Ancestor veneration is huge to my practice and this seems like a gift from my granny in a time of need.
âThe story tells us that when our dear Lord was yet a small boy, He loved to play in the garden. On one occasion the Archangels, Michael and Gabriel, appeared to Him and held before His tender eyes the instruments of His future torture - the cross, the nails, the lance. The little Jesus, in terror, fled into the house and sought refuge in the arms of His Mother. In His haste the Child nearly lost one of His sandals. In this picture it is seen falling from His foot. "From the meaning of this picture we see that Our Lord Himself went to Mary, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, when He was in danger and in need." His love for Mary is, consequently, the source of our own love for her, for how would love have been born in us had He not loved her first and translated a spark of that fire into our hearts?â
See the link below to read the history of the Icon.
The one on the left is grannyâs and the one on the right is the one I ran across online that helped me to identify it.
The Chaplet of the Mother of Perpetual Help is a devotion that can be prayed on a standard rosary. It involves praying on five decades, with prayers for the large beads, a repeating short prayer on the small beads, and a concluding prayer after each decade. The chaplet concludes with prayers like the "Hail Holy Queen" and a final concluding prayer to Our Lady.
