@autistic--rory-blog

Youāve written about the harmful effects of functioning labels for autism, how do you feel about mild/moderate/severe labels for intellectual disability? Do you find them as harmful or useful in some way? I know that autism functioning labels are based on pretty much nothing while intellectual disability labels are a mix of IQ and functional/adaptive skills...which are difficult to get real, unbiased results on. Sorry for rambling, just curious what you thought about it
personally i think those labels are fine when they are given correctly as they are based on measurable things and have defined definitions where autism functioning labels dont. when i say given correctly i mean diagnosed with iq tests that are suited to the persons needs and not the ones given to most people and tests of skills based on their age and given with accommodations that the person needs.Ā
are there any behaviors or actions that bother most autistic people? if thereās anything i can do/not do to make them more comfortable iād like to do so :)
unfortunately thats probably better to ask the specific autistic person you are talking to. autism is very much based on extremes so something that might help one person could be really bad for someone else. just be kind and dont speak to us like were little kids
William Shatner is still arguing in support of autism speaks in 2k19 and pulling the āhigh functioning autistics do not speak for low functioning autisticsā card again, like. Iām tired. Iām tired of liberal celebrities fucking giving money to autism speaks and not listening to us. Iām sick of people like Benedict cumberbatch being defended over comparing us as a muse for Frankensteinās monster. And it doesnāt get half the outrage on social media
i hate that those things happen too and im sorry because it sucks. i dont understand why most neurotypical people dont care about the issues autistic people face (its probably the ableism) but they should. especially when celebrities spread such amounts of hate and misinformation
Nice blog, go ahead!
thank you!
hi! i just discovered your blog and iām really glad i did. i am not autistic, but i go to a therapeutic school and the building is separated with two schools- one for kids with mental health issues, and one for kids with autism/behavioral issues. i try to be as understanding as possible but itās really difficult when some of the kids from the other school are mean to me for no reason. for example, a kid that rides on my bus got mad because i just ālisten to music and do nothingā [1/2]
[2/2] ive experienced these kids making fun of my clothing, hair, and looks. iāve had them tell me iām going to hell for being gay. its upsetting bc i cant do anything bc āthey canāt help itā (thatās what the teachers at my school say) or āthey donāt know any better.ā but i really donāt think having autism or a behavioral issue is an excuse to say things so hurtful- they know itās mean bc their teachers have told them not to say things like that. can you help me understand the situation better?
im going to say something that a lot of other people say. being autistic is not an excuse to be mean or rude knowingly. doing it because you dont know and you want to avoid doing it in the future is different but if you know youre being mean or rude theres no excuse. im sorry they are like that and im sorry the teachers arent doing anything about it. if they know what they are doing (and it sounds like they do) then try and complain to people higher up. they shouldnt be treating you like that even if they are autistic
What is it about car radios that make them pure hell? Am I the only autistic person who feels sick when someone puts the radio on?
i dont like them either. theyre always really loud and have bad noises. i just turn them off and listen to my own music normally
being neurodivergent does not equal being incompetentĀ
disabled people do not always have to be grateful for their carers
an autistic person deserves just as much privacy as a non autistic person does
autism is not overdiagnosed
[tw mention of pet dying] my dogs are 10 and 13years old now and every time someone mention how much they are old now i feel like any minute they will die and it's painful to me. My relatives told me i'm immature, i know dogs are not immortal but they are important to me :( see them in pain or anything is like it's a pain in me too
im sorry you feel like that and you are not being immature. having a companion animal or one who you really like is a very special thing and having them be sick or pass away can be really hard. i hope they live at least a few more years and that you have a lot of time to prepare for when they do die without them being in pain
Tbh, for future reference, though Deku's alter is in fact a NOMAP, don't believe a random Anon about someone being a MAP or pedo without proof because on Tumblr 99.9% of the time it's a dogwhistle.
yeah thats probably best. i just dont really know how to deal with these things and i usually end up believing people just to be sure sorry
I am finding out the results of my autism assessment next week and it is giving me anxiety. I'm wondering if you know anything about autism "levels." I am very obviously autistic in most situations, but I also have a very high intelligence score. I'm worried that this may lead to a level 1 diagnosis despite needing more support than the amount described by the dsm for level 1. I feel really uncomfortable with being labeled by a number that might impact what accommodation I have access to.
this is one of the reasons i do not like functioning labels/levels. they dont give accurate ways to help people. i have the level 3 diagnosis and need all of the support i get with that but i know people who dont need it all and some who are a lower level and need the same amount of support i get. probably the best thing to do if you do end up with a level 1 diagnosis is to find someone who bases what support you get based on what you need rather then what random level is placed on you. unfortunately not many people do that but there are some who do. if you know what specifc support you want i would say go for it and try to get it no matter what diagnosis you get
Do you use anything like acc tablets? (The talky things) If so do have any tips on overcoming fear and using when need to? Recently got a tablet with it but feel too anxious to use it when nonverbal
i have a ipad with proloquo2go which is used only as my talking device. i didnt really feel anxious when i started using it because it was very much needed. but some things i would assume would help are things like starting by using it when you are alone and verbal so you can get used to using it by doing things like talking to youself with it. also you can use it with others who would be around when you are nonverbal and use it when you are verbal around them to get them used to you using it even if it is only used for single word answers during that. some people will assume you dont need it and that happens to me but really all you can do when that happens is ignore them. you know what you need and what helps you the best
Your blog is literally so true, essentially everything you post I agree with
thank you as well! i try to make them relatable!
ohhh my god if only we could collect all your posts and put them into a book and sell it in every language!!!!!! everyone needs to see these!! ā”
thank you!!
