a plague on both your houses: auggie/ava
Ava Hightower had never held a job in her entire life; she wasn’t about to live as a working woman just because she introduced herself as a Kenway now. One does not lose their sense of self, because they took a plane to Illinois. With little other to do than guilt trip Jason and convince Abel to hold still for make-up, she woke up early in search of the nearest boutique. The only shops in Naperville included Sears, Walmart in something called Kwik-e-mart. She tasted vomit in her mouth. 45 minutes away was cute store providing much of Ava’s future Naperville wardrobe... or at least a swim suit. Yesterday afternoon, she passed a lake on the outskirts of town--that was quaint, that was Americana, that was the Kenway spirit. Not having packed a swim suit, however, she fingers texted furiously in the back of a rented limo as she rode to the boutique. Included in her purchases were a baby blue bikini, large sun hat, two new pairs of sunglasses, sandals, and a sun dress. She felt like she was going to the Hamptons...
But when she arrived back in Naperville, that dream was promptly crushed. Why couldn’t her father lived somewhere else? Been someone else? Ava tipped the limo driver and walked through the wooded area leading to the lake. Born and bred in New York City, the feeling of dirty and grass in her sandal felt uncomfortable and foreign. She missed pavement. Maybe she could convince Jason to move to New York...
(Ava would never admit it, but she wasn’t going to leave Naperville without him. She’s been fatherless for nearly eighteen years. She wasn’t about to abandon him so soon.)
Finding a secluded spot on the bank of the lake, Ava laid down a towel and promptly stripped off the strappy yellow sundress to leave her basking in the bikini. And that’s when something caught her attention. Ava had always had a good sense of hearing--too good as her mother would say. She could hear people whispering in the next room, the elevator rising to the top floor of her apartment building, taxi cabs rounding the corner. But today, it was the snapping of twigs that made her ears twitch. Someone was near. Ava furrowed her brows, flipping her hair off one shoulder. I hope it’s not someone boring, she thought to herself as she laid down on the towel.Â
The purplish spot on her naked neck where a fairytale vampire had feasted.

When she looked up, she saw clear skies. In New York, Ava saw skyscrapers. Clear skies were fine she supposed, but there were no people typing and texting in the skies. In New York, everyone was working; everyone was working towards something. They strove for their goals, whether that be make it on Broadway or pay the week’s rent, but at least there was an energy in the air. In Naperville, there was just humidity. With this thought in her head, Ava smoothed down her hair; one musn’t let the weather become an excuse for a poor outfit. Today it was a red crop top with high waisted denim shorts and black ankle boots. She shoved her very Lennon-y sunglasses on top of her head as she looked up at the house before her.
It was no high rise, no beach house at the Hampton’s. It looked like what television producers thought American homes looked like. Red brick, desperate for a lawn trim, and a used car in the driveway. Ava raised a perfectly groomed eyebrow at the sight. Her music teachers always told her there was a grounded and human element of her performances; maybe this was why, because it sure as hell wasn’t thanks to Emma or the Hightowers.
With an oversized purse over her shoulder containing the essentials for a father-finding-in-Illinois-exposition, she clicked her feet up the drive and to the front door. With a quick knock, knock, knock Ava prepared the face the man who’d given her nothing but half of her genes. She smacked her lips together a few times to fix her lipstick.Â
