Traces
It’s always been like this with you. A thousand times we’ve said adieu.
I’m reaching, breaking, bending too. While you hem and haw and play boy blue.
There were some good times, but really, were there? Mascara tears as you wink and stare... at shiny strangers and lovers past. Looking past me like shattered glass.
Names and dreams under night stars. Now haunt and bleed like fresh cut scars.
I paint a smile, I twist, I mend. One step, one stumble as I pretend...to make my peace among the pieces... of broken love and all your demons.
You’re chasing highs from bed to bed, a hit, a glance, you’re seeing red. Before dawn breaks and the craving starts. Discard and fade and then restart.
And here I stand, with fading traces of who I was and both your faces. The darkness wrapped like an armored blanket. The future blank, colors unpainted.
The world exhausted, I’m barely breathing. The light and spark from my soul fleeting. Where’s my fight when I need it most? Where’s my god, my hope, my home?
To start anew, to try again, to rise and burn and shed my skin. To make my bed, to find my why. To raise my head and open my eyes.
That’s something, right? To run, to fly? To become who I am and look towards the sky. One day, one life, just one more cry. It’s time, my love, to say goodbye.
Today, I am untangling the loneliness from my skin. Today, I will be a sunflower. Chewing on sunshine. Spilling yellow dust everywhere. Today, I will be somebody’s yellow paint.
