There were only two witnesses who actually claimed to have seen the shooting. One was a prostitute, who could theoretically have been pressured by the police to testify the way that they wanted, and the other was only able to provide a general description of the shooter that matched Abu-Jamal, rather than specifically identifying him as the shooter. There are other witnesses who claimed to have seen Abu-Jamal in the area at the time of the shooting, or to have heard him speaking about it after it happened, but none of them actually saw him pull the trigger. So it’s possible that he didn’t do it.
Abu-Jamal’s defense also provided some witnesses whose accounts contradicted those of the prosecution. The court judged that they were not credible for various reasons. In later years, there was also a man named Arnold Beverly who claimed to have been the real shooter…
Jamal was subject to COINTELPRO. If you haven’t heard than please research it a little. It was an FBI program designed to dismantle the highly popular New Left movements of the 1960s and 70s. With black leaders, COINTELPRO was especially vicious. Under the Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts there are unclassified documents outlining the FBI’s atrocities.
