Avery had been trying to reconnect with people after such a long and unexpected absence. Her boots kicked down at the dirt in front of her, contemplating if she should go towards him or not. Almost turning around to leave, she stopped, letting out a deep sigh. The person she was trying to approach was in fact, Nikolas. With a soft voice she uttered, "Niko." She then proceeded to try and tap his shoulder, but then shook her head. That wasn't her at all, she decided on hugging him, "Hello~"

Nikolas’ body stiffened in surprise when he felt arms suddenly wrap around him in a hug. But then he heard her soft voice greeting him and his muscles relaxed as he turned around to face her. He felt instant relief the moment he laid his eyes on her and a smile formed on his lips. “Avy,” he exhaled just before he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a tight hug. “You’re back.” He whispered into her hair just before he pulled back, resting his hands firmly on her shoulders so he could examine her fully, green eyes looking her over with intensity, “It’s great to see you again…..how have you been?”

Avery was taken aback by his sudden actions, breaking eye contact and looking every which way but towards his emerald like eyes.

"I’m, I’ve uhhh…," Avery went to go and touch the fur on her jacket, a nervous mannerism she had just become accustomed to, it acted as a mechanism to calm her down. Although not quite this time, as she had forgotten that Nikolas had his arms atop her shoulders. Where her hands were making there way now.

The warmth from his hands were quite different then the texture of fur. She however did not release her hands from atop of his. “I’m…better now that you are here.” Realizing what she had just said, she closes her eyes tightly, “I mean umm, I’m glad to be back, I’m good, ahhh…” She shakes her head back in forth, “…what about you, how have you been?”

Nikolas was caught up in the realization that Avery was standing right in front of him, breathing and still so full of life. He had feared the worst after not seeing her for so long after the very recent events that had occurred. The thoughts tried to creep their way back into his head but he shook them away. No, she was standing here and that was enough for him. She was safe.

He flinched only slightly at the contact, but the familiar touch of her hands on top of his put him at ease. He didn’t dare move them. He smiled down at her, a simple gesture he was sure he had forgotten as the days had gone on, “That’s good to hear. I’m…..I’m glad you’re here.” He grimaced at the question of how he had been. In truth, he had felt like his life had been in a complete downward spiral. But he couldn’t bring himself to tell her any of that. “I’ve been better, but I guess a lot of us can say that huh?” He tried to make light of it as best he could.

Avery tightened her grasp on his hands unintentionally, her eyes lowering at his answer, “Ahhhh, this life we live…,is quite unforgiving.” She backs up a few steps from Nikolas, so that she can gaze up at him and fully try to read him. She was deeply concerned, since she had no idea how the mission had affected him, and judging by his answer it didn’t go well either. She contemplated on her next words, searching her mind for the right things to say, in doing so bringing up some unneeded memories.

A sigh escapes her lips, “-But, isn’t that what living is for?, to constantly try and knock you down.” Realizing her hands were starting to shake, she breaks the contact, and turns away from him, “I know all of this pain everyone is facing is not in vain…,” She grits her teeth together, “I just know it…, one day it will all mean something.” Her fists were clenched together to keep her emotions at bay, along with deep breaths. ‘I have to keep myself together, I can’t give in anymore’. Again she shakes it off, and turns back around to Nikolas, “I want to know what happened to you while I was away…, I’ll listen. Since if you’ve been better-” Her eyebrows furrow in concern, “That means something bad has happened.”
