“I cannot believe you pulled all of this together without letting me know beforehand.” Octavia looked around their bungalow, situated directly on the water, before focusing her attention back on Roman. Back when they first got married they barely tolerated each other. They didn’t get married for love but due to their duty to their respective families. He was a better option than Wade, which is why she chose him. Now? Now they were good. They had spoken about going on that honeymoon they didn’t go on after their wedding, seeing as their careers had taken priority, besides back then it would’ve just been awkward without the buffer of her brother between them. “Your timing is wonderful though, with everything going on at the Ministry we deserved a break. A coup can be so tiring.”

Octavia had never really ‘celebrated’ St. Valentines day before, although she had insisted on a gift from her brother and her cousin every year because she felt like it was a good occasion to get jewellery. This was her first Valentines being married, so she felt like she had to do something nice for Roman because he kept spoiling her (as she deserved). So she bought herself a nice dress, figure hugging and backless as she knew he liked and got him matching cuff lengths in the same green as her dress. It would go well with some of the robes he had so she thought it would be a nice addition. She was putting final touches on her make up when she heard him enter the bedroom, putting the make up brush down she walked over to him, spinning once to show off the dress.

“Warm then cold then warm again.” It would be the only hint he would be able to toss her way. He wouldn’t endanger her, sharing knowledge that she wasn’t meant to know but he had missed his sister. Something desperately as he was surrounded by family in the last few days.

“As I recall, you were born screaming and looking entirely too much like a house elf.” In the first few days of Octavia being on the earth, Roderick had asked their father if they could give his sister back. He had no idea at the time how their father would grow to treat Octavia. 

She knew that he could not tell her more about his mission, but that did not stop her curiosity of what had happened. Perhaps he could tell her more with time, she was incredibly nosy after all so she did not enjoy being kept in the dark, even if Octavia was aware that there was a reason for this. 

“I detest that. I have seen baby pictures of myself. I was much cuter than you were.” Octavia grinned, it was a petty argument, but it felt nice being able to do this in person again rather than over a letter. Tone did not convey well over text after all. It did not have the same effect. Choosing to change the subject to something he was able to talk to her about. “Tell me, do you have any plans for St. Valentines? Or would the correct question be with how many people do you plan to spend it?”

“Do I seem like the type of man who would be content with a Sandra?” She was growing more absurd by the second. “The fact that you believe my judgement wouldn’t be adequate is insulting. Your insistence that you must step into my life more so. You can leave now, Octavia, as you have nothing of value to say.”

“I trust you to pick wiser than Wade has.” She has given up hope on Wade finding someone better, he was too stupid and stubborn. Roderick however was smarter, he was her brother after all. A scandalised gasp left her lips when she processed her brother’s words. “You want me to leave?” She scoffed at him, taking her bag and leaving the room, clearly offended. “Good day, brother.”

Roman caught the look Octavia gave him, clearly she found this whole thing amusing, he wished he could have her levity for idiots. “It’s difficult to ignore them when they’re so forward, he practically had me backed into a corner.” Roman rolled his eyes. “Yes. Please. How are you finding the evening?”

“Well aren’t you lucky you have an amazing wife that has come to save you from such an uncomfortable situation.” She grinned, flattering herself with her comment, but she believed to only be speaking the truth. Octavia considered herself to be a great wife to him. Motioning a waiter over she ordered a glass of firewhiskey for the both of them. “It is quite boring, don’t you think? I could think of better ways to spend our time.”

Roman stared in horrored disbelief as the wizard continued to go on and on about salted caramel whiskey. He had opened his mouth to bite out a snarky response yet again before he felt his wife’s hand on his arm and she thankfully pulled him away. “If you’ll excuse me” he said shortly to the man before turning on his heel and moving away with his wife. “Why are people so stupid. Honestly. It’s baffling. I need a headache potion”

Octavia knew better than to laugh at the man in public as it would have been considered rude of her to do so, but the glint in her eyes would tell Roman that she found the situation highly entertaining. If only because she thought it was hot when he got angry. “Just ignore them, love. You know what you’re doing. I don’t have a headache potion in my bag, but how about we get something to drink?”

Roderick busied himself putting his shirt back on as he said thank you to his sister. “Spain. The beach. A staircase. Which story would you like to hear that I’m allowed to tell?” He wished he could have shared news of his assignment with her but secrecy was paramount in their work. It was strange. That they couldn’t share their secrets anymore. For most of his life, she was the only person who knew everything about him. He’d say that person was Irene now but that was no longer true. 

“You’ve become a lady? We’ll have to celebrate that. Dinner or a party for you step into high society?” Roderick asked as if they didn’t each have a party in their honor when they came of age. 

“I’d rather skip the made up stories, it will save both of us time.” She waved it off with a roll of her eyes. It was stupid that he was not allowed to share his mission with her, she was a Redeemer and his sister. Octavia was loyal, she would never betray her brother by breathing a word of this to someone else. “Was the weather nice at least? The weather here has been entirely too dreadful. I am thinking of asking Roman to get away for a while. I was thinking of Mexico. Should be nice this time of year.” At least that’s what she remembered from the last time she had been there. 

“Very funny, brother. I was born a lady. Beauty and grace like that isn’t something you can learn. Either one has it or they don’t. It’s a birthright.” She rattled off what she remembered her grandmother saying when she was younger. Not that she had visited too often.

“I just know” he grinned, he knew Roderick wouldn’t be interested in Daphne, but at the very least it would be entertaining. Especially entertaining when Octavia was inevitably proved wrong. “Do you know that with certainty?” he copied her previous words with a very amused smirk on his face. “I will be right. I’m telling you. I’d be willing to make a bet on it.”

“He’s my brother. I know what’s good for him.” Octavia meant well, even if it was an entirely misguided effort on her part. “I’m not interfering with Wade and Sandra.” She had thought about it, but she knew that Roman wouldn’t approve of it so she decided to accept it, didn’t mean she liked the thought of keeping Sandra in their lives. Hopefully they would not come over much. “Let’s bet on it then. I already know what I want when I win.” She didn’t consider the option of losing, she never did.

“Calling this an argument implies we’re disagreeing. We’re not because I’m not entertaining even a discussion about this, Octavia. I have no need for you to get yourself involved with my personal life.” Roderick pushed his chair away from his desk and leaned back, observing for more a moment with a severe stare. “If I ever felt a need to settle down, you would know when I introduced you to the woman.”

“Of course there is a need for me to get involved, otherwise I would not be.” She rolled her eyes, dismissing that he was trying to put her in her place by giving her some sort of lecture. His speech was entirely unnecessary, in the end she’d find a way to get him to come ‘round. Hopefully. “I don’t want to risk you choosing someone I don’t get along with. I already have to suffer with Sandra. Don’t make me go through that again.”

How was the world filled with so many idiots? His wife, and sometimes his brother, not included in that. The good part about having a successful business was exactly that, he was successful. The bad part was that people felt as thought that meant you had the time to listen to their stupid ideas. Roman hated supplying Ministry events for this particular reason, people found out he was the supplier and decided to share their stupid ideas with him. “Why don’t I make a salted caramel firewhiskey?” he asked in utter disbelief “Because that sounds disgusting.”

Octavia had been making her rounds greeting people she had to pretend to care about, particularly all the pureblood mothers that told their daughters to take her as an example. She was a great role model after all. Perhaps the best one. Catching part of the conversation she held her hand over her mouth, letting out a small laugh at how irritated her husband sounded, deciding to save him by coming up with an excuse.. “If you’ll excuse us.” Octavia smiled politely before turning to her husband. Mr. Shafiq asked for you.”

Roderick looked up over the papers he was reviewing for the next board meeting. His eyes narrowing at the finger his sister was holding in front of his face. She had the nerve to interrupt him in the middle of the day for what? An update on her decorating project? Perhaps she had gotten a new cover. “No.” His mood hadn’t been foul before Octavia finished her idiotic plan but the idea of going on a date with whatever spineless woman she could find was not something he could stand at the moment. “When did you appoint yourself my matchmaker? I don’t recall hiring you.”

The fact that he had a meeting soon didn’t matter much to Octavia, thinking her plans were of higher importance than a meeting with a bunch of old men. So he wasn’t as open to the idea as she had assumed he would be, but that was going to change. “Don’t argue with me.” She was doing this for his own good. “You do not have to hire me, I am your sister, I know what’s good for you. You made a comment about our family asking why you came to visit them alone and I figured out what you were trying to tell me with that. You are ready to settle down.” At least that’s what she wanted for him. She couldn’t risk him becoming like Wade and ending up with someone she didn’t like, like that Sandra girl.

Roderick slid his shirt off of his arm, rolling his eyes at Octavia’s question as he turned to show his sister his side. The spot of newly healed skin in between his ribs. “Is there a scar there? You must have something for one.” Irene had done an ever better job of healing him than he had anticipated. He wouldn’t have come to see his sister while in such a state. She had no reason to worry about him. His assignment had been successful even with the injury he had returned with.

He knew Octavia had a closet full of creams and balms. His own skincare regime was a result of her wealth of knowledge. Roderick took a moment, shock clear on his face as he tended to not put up much with a façade with her. “He apologized to you. You’re joking.” He hadn’t thought he would see the day. “Grudge and you don’t seem to fit in the same sentence, do they?”

“How did that happen?” Octavia was by his side quickly when he asked if there was a scar, grimacing when she noticed the wound. “There won’t be one soon. I have a good cream, put it on twice a day and your skin is going to be as good as new in a couple of days. It’s good that you came now while its still fresh, it will take less time to fade.” Scars that have been there longer needed more time to heal. Or at least that’s what the girl in the beauty shop had told her. She quickly called Kyle over and instructed him to bring the cream before she handed it to her brother. 

“You can keep it and I will get a new one when I go back to Diagon Alley next week. I do not expect I shall be getting new scars in the mean time.” Despite how spoilt and entitled she was, Octavia had never been the type to be greedy. Especially not with family. “I am not joking. That is why I chose to forgive him.” That and that he was a good kisser, that helped too. “They do not. A lady does not hold grudges.”

Roderick took a moment to stare at his sister. His eyes narrowing in amusement. She was full of it sometime, just utterly self-absorbed and self-concerned. It brought a sense of pride to him, that despite their alliances and hobbies Octavia was still herself. It was a stability that he could count on. “They do have international owls that are reliable. As well as the banks, ‘tavia.” She should know from the amount she ordered from overseas. The slip into Spanish had been unconscious. It wasn’t as if there was a threat of anyone listening in here. 

Amusement sliding into seriousiness at his sister’s inquiry, Roderick shook his head slowly. “I’ve been better. I need you to look at something for me.” The parts of his time away not spent in Spain hadn’t been easy. He wasn’t keen on telling his sister specific details of his mission but he assumed she at least knew he had been on an assignment. Though there was never a good way to tell what she did gleam from missions. Roderick began removing his jacket and started working on the buttons of his shirt. “Great? Good.” It wasn’t the answer he had expected to hear but it was better than dealing with either of them while they were arguing. The place did seem different. Setting up Roman with his sister wasn’t about happiness, it had been business and preventing weakness from entangling itself with their family line.

Octavia sighed dramatically, waving his words off and dismissing them as if she was actually listening and considering it. Which she wasn’t. International owls had a weight limit on what they could carry and going to a bank to get everything was such a hassle. This was more convenient. “I do know that, but don’t you think it is much more fun for you to bring me all of these gifts? It makes it more special.” She easily switched to spanish as well and put her hand on her heart, batting her eyelashes over dramatically before letting out a laugh. 

Curiosity peaked, she raised an eyebrow. “What is it?” He’d been away on some classified business for the redeemers, but she was definitely curious on if it had been a fruitious trip or if it had been a waste of his time.  “Don’t sound so surprised. I told you I had him under control and I do, he apologised to me and we moved on from it. I’m not the type to hold a grudge.” That was a lie, she absolutely was, but her brother didn’t need to know just how much they had made up. He wouldn’t be pleased to find out just why things were going so great.

Octavia had the week off so she decided now was the perfect time to set her plan into motion. Roderick would have to go and ask out Daphne Greengrass on some kind of date and then they’d get along wonderfully and laughing at her would bite Roman in the ass. And if not, she had several other prospects lined up. Not that any of them knew about this of course. “Guess what.” She grinned at her brother, pausing as if she would give him time to answer but holding up her finger to indicate him not to interrupt her. “You’re going to go on a date. I have someone in mind for you. Obedient. Pretty. What more can you want?”

The ridiculous number of gifts for Octavia had been shrunk down into his pocket but upon his entrance into her sitting room, Roderick began the tedious duty of shrinking them and floating them to the table. “I’m sure it is with this mountain of things for you. It’s as if the post had never occured to half our family members.” He had been gone for entirely too long, as she had said. While the bringing of these gifts and notes and trinkets was a show if anyone did suspect any ill intent on Roderick’s part for a three month trip to Spain, he had indeed seen their family. And every question had either been about Octavia’s new husband or when he was getting a wife of his own. “I’ve been told to tell you it’s your turn to visit. Why it was my fault the newlyweds didn’t join me I’m not sure.” Finishing his task, he dropped a kiss on the top of his sister’s head and took a seat in the chaise across from her. “How have you been? Has Roman been taking care of you?” Or was he in for another martial dispute story?

Octavia grinned in excitement he had mentioned gifts for her in his last letter and she wanted to see what she had gotten. That’s why she always stopped by her relatives if she was doing a photoshoot close by. “They wanted to get only the most valuable things for me. I would not trut the post to deliver them instead of trying to keep it for themselves.” Their family was as prejudiced as it was paranoid. “Noted. Roman and I are planning to take a trip this summer. Spain is beautiful that time of the year.” Certainly more so than Germany where the Avery’s had their roots. “I’ve been well, how about you?” When he asked if Roman had been treating her well she couldn’t help but smirk for a moment, quickly covering it up with a smile. “No maritial disputes here. We’re good. Great even.”

“I don’t think thats the case for Daphne, trust me.” Roman snickered, sitting forward again in his seat so he could rest his arms in his wife’s lap. “I don’t think we’ll have much of a choice. He’d either hide at our manor or at the club.” he shook his head, unable to wipe the amused smile off his face, he couldn’t wait to talk to Rod about this. “Alright, fine. When I end up being right about Greengrass, who do you intend to put in the running next?” 

“Do you know that with certainty?” She looked at him, eyebrow raised as she stroked over his hand with her thumb.Roman always felt the need to touch her in some way or another, not that she was complaining. “That won’t happen.” Octavia waved him off confidently. She would find Roderick a wife he would be pleased with. “If you end up being right... I’ll move on to one of the Carrow girls. I’m thinking Flora, but I haven’t made my mind up yet.”
