So far, the Abalone book tour was everything and more than she expected. Her book was already well-loved, there was talk of trying to release it internationally and in forty languages already, and already people were asking about a prospective new book. Nothing could explain her happiness... But at the same time, nothing could express her longing to go back home. Her missed her family. She missed waking up to her wife being in her arms, with Mars coming in for morning cuddles along with the dogs in tow. While the time difference wasn’t too big, Avery was waiting anxiously for Percy to answer her call. The girl just staring at the screen with her leg bouncing. Until finally, the black screen was replaced with her wife’s beautiful face. And automatically, Avery perked up and beamed softly. “Hi baby! I’ve missed you so much. How’s your day been? Are the kids behaving like angels or being little hellions?”

“Hey, guess what? Your favourite person is still alive.” Avery grinned at the blonde, teasing her slightly. Avery was perched on the couch of her room, the city skyline shining through the window behind her as she looked at her friend through her laptop. “No, but for real: today has been so chaotic, I just opted to order room service instead of going out with my team. I forgot that it was all so crazy yet exciting.”

“I forgot how chaotic it all is.” A year later and she was on her second book tour ever. Avery was unable to express the excitement of it all, though. How happy she was, how great it was to see the people who loved her first book. The reviews were starting to come in on Abalone and miraculously, they were all good reviews. Mostly five stars, a couple four and a half, one or two four stars. Fans and critics were loving her take on Poseidon and Amphitrite; And god, she wanted to cry. The raven-haired woman finally had some downtime and was trying to catch up with some people back home. In one of Percy’s old tops and some comfy sweats, she smiled at Daniel through her laptop screen. “It’s crazy, bro. I was so worried people weren’t going to like this book; People seem to love it as much as Kaleidoscope.”

It had taken much longer than Percy was altogether comfortable with to find Avery after she’d lost her in the crowd at the bonfire, the relief she felt as she caught sight of the familiar form of her wife almost palpable to her which was only slightly ridiculous considering she wasn’t exactly worried her wife was going to be kidnapped or murdered or something in the span of the thirty minutes they hadn’t been able to find each other. “I feel like I’ve been halfway across the countryside lookin’ for you, baby girl,” Percy said as she approached the younger woman, a hint of amusement in her tone as she reached for Avery’s hand, tangling their fingers together loosely. She studied her wife for a quiet moment, leaning in to press a kiss to Avery’s temple before she guided the other woman towards an empty chair and pulled her down into her lap– a familiar position for them, to be certain, but one that had the added benefit of making it a bit easier to have a conversation. “Everything alright, baby?”
Nothing could describe how terrified she was. She wasn’t sure how long it’s been since they were separate; Yet ever since then, her vision had gotten blurry four more times. Five, now. She’d been near the Below Zero truck when her vision got blurry again. At this point, she was beginning to cry. She was scared, she couldn’t see, and worst of all? She hasn’t found Percy yet. Avery gasped the second she felt a touch, turning her head in a (rather sad) attempt to see who it was. Yet she soon began to recognize that touch. The curves of her hand, long and nimble fingers that have caressed her skin multiple times, a touch that was automatically home to her. Then came the voice. The voice she woke up to every morning and fell asleep to every night. It was Percy; Her Percy. “B-Baby,” she whimpered out, unable to fully say anything in the moment. The kiss calmed her down yet she still couldn’t see. Led to a chair, Avery automatically curled up in her wife’s lap and hid her face in the crook of her neck. Shaking and terrified, seeing nothing but blurry figures and shapes. “I-I can’t see,” she finally admitted. “It... Baby, i-it’s happening again. I can’t s-see anything. It’s all blurry... It’s happening more often now.” She shook her head as she let out a sob. “I can’t see you. I c-can’t see y-you...”

CLOSED STARTER
Sitting by the bonfire with a bottle of beer in hand, Carla looked over to her side where Avery was sitting down. It was still surreal to believe that the other had actually been living in Providence Peak herself without Carla even knowing. Even if she was a married woman now, and what they did in the past was not something that should have let them be only friends, that’s exactly what they were. “I realized I am absolutely terrible at paintball today. Well, I knew that already. For some reason I just keep hoping I’ll get better over the next year but clearly that’s never happened.”
By all accounts, she knew that some people might find it a bit strange how the two were able to be friends despite having the kind of past they did and how of the two, Avery was married now. Yet, that didn’t seemed to matter one bit. Sure, their initial run-in at been on the awkward side. But after talking to each other again, they fortunately had been able to strike up a friendship and now, the brunette was certain that she never wanted Carla out of her life ever again. “I totally thought I was gonna be a badass at it. Tiny but mighty, no one can see me, that sort of thing. I feel like a Picasso right now.” Plus, one of Percy’s shirts was now stained in paint. Oops. Glancing at the blonde, she beamed. “Alright, we just need to practice more over the course of this next year! We will absolutely kick ass next time. Just... really need to practice a shit ton. We got this.”

Casey wanted to get some snacks and drinks for them and insisted that James just wait for her so the blond now sat on one of the picnic tables waiting for his sister. His feet on the seats, he wanted to be a head above everyone else just so Casey could find him in case she needed help with the food. The crowd had started to grow and he really wanted to get away somewhere with less people. However, he was suddenly shaken out of his own thoughts when the woman came running up to him.
“Uh, yeah, sure,” he said, fishing his phone out of his pocket and handing it to her. He figured that if she was trying to steal his phone, he would have easily taken it back from her. Now if she was planting some sort of bug to hack his phone, then that’s a whole other thing. He began to wonder whether Army vets could still call on the assistance of the IT people that are serving.
“Hey, are you okay?” James asked when he saw the woman’s genuine worry though there was still a part of him that was on guard. “I’m… sure she’s around here somewhere, probably stuck in a line at a taco food truck like my sister.”
“Thank you,” she mumbled, trying to calm her racing heart. Okay. It’s okay. It’s going to be okay. He was going to give her his phone, she was going to get to call Percy, find her, and be reunited. It was okay. No problem. But what if her wife’s phone was also dead? What if she couldn’t reach her? What if her vision got blurry again? It was starting to happen more often now. The blurriness. At first, it wasn’t so bad and happened every once in awhile. Now, the blurry was happening sooner and longer. She didn’t know the man before her and couldn’t explain to him what was going on. He didn’t know her, he didn’t know how to help her.
Avery nodded, fumbling as she tried to type out the right number. “Y-Yeah, I’m... I’m okay. I just, you know, didn’t expect to get separated from her like that. I know she’s close by, I can feel it. I’m just...” What if she can’t see her? What if her vision got blurry again and she walks right past Percy? Her bottom lip quivering, she finally said softly, “I just really need her right now.” Wait, was that a five or a two? Did she press nine? No... No, she pressed six. She was blinking quickly, squinting at the screen that wasn’t too far away from her face. “I can’t... I can’t, I-I can’t read it. I can’t read the keypad. I don’t know which numbers I’m typing in.” She knew Percy’s number by heart. She memorized it the night after they first met.

Danny almost laughs at her reply, but he maintains the character for a few seconds longer. With a curt nod of his head, he rests a hand on her shoulders and locks eyes with her. “You’ll tell them yourself, soldier.” And once he lets go, his expression melts from the intensity of a general to the amusement of a man wearing paintball gear. “Really appreciate the commitment, but I hope you realize you can never call me a nerd again after this. I mean, you dove right into it.”
Avery kept a serious look on her face, though she wanted to laugh. Locking eyes, she nodded. Every intent on remaining in character for as long as possible. “Yes, general. I’ll tell her myself, general.” Until finally, Daniel broke first. Causing the younger girl to burst into a fit of giggles as she shook her head. “LARP and acting, Danny Boy. I am sooo in my element right now. But no, I am still going to call you a nerd from now on. I was just following your lead in all of this.”

Rachel couldn’t see how the younger woman could stand that much spice but let out a small sigh. She hadn’t meant to hurt Avery’s feelings and she of course hadn’t meant to hurt her. Shaking her head she spoke, “It’s okay Aves, honestly. You didn’t mean to almost kill me. Just remind me from now on to get my own thing of nachos or whatever you put hot sauce on.” She wiped at her brow as she felt the sweat when she moved her hand away. Laughing a bit now that she wasn’t feeling absolutely terrible anymore, Rachel nodded. “Yes, I am feeling better. I’ll let you know if I need them later, but for now I think I’m doing alright.” She took another spoonful as she looked around the area they were in. “So did you have fun out there?”
She nodded at her words. “Will do, yeah. I’m so sorry still. Both sides of my family loves spicy food.” Her mother was from the Calabria region of Italy and her father was from the Gujarat region of India. Suffice to say, spicy was another language spoken for them. However, she should’ve probably warn Rachel at first about how spicy her nachos were. “A lesson has truly been learned here,” she joked, smiling softly. “Okay, sounds good. I’m really sorry. I mean, if you still want nachos, we can go back to the truck and order your own. I promise not to touch them. I still, yeah! I think I would’ve last longer had I not get something in my eye. One minute, I was on top of the world and kicking ass. The next, a lash or something got in and I was pummeled with paintballs. I do not want to see what bruises I got and how visible they’re going to be.” Oooo, her manager was going to kill her if there are any visible bruises. She goes on tour in on the 27th, so hopefully they’ll be gone by then. “Seriously, you should do it next year! I promise it’s a lot of fun.”

She shook her head, “That is not a normal amount of spice Avery!” She exclaimed as they waited for the man to scoop the ice cream, glancing between the two women hesitantly before she took the ice cream from Avery and placed it to her lips, letting the cold ease her tongue as she put the cup to her mouth almost like an ice pack. “I could handle it?! I don’t know if I should feel flattered or tell you that you’re deranged!” Rachel put another bite in her mouth, knowing her sweater was heating her up more, but also knowing she could no longer take it off because she had most likely sweat through her shirt. The world must really hate her, she was figuring out as she needed to sit down. She shook her head a bit, “And to answer your question, no I don’t think Percy would have a second wedding for a nachos bar. Or maybe she would, but you could always just make them at home, although I will never be having them again.” Rachel was really feeling her age right about now as she was putting another spoonful of ice cream into her mouth.
“It is for me...” Then again, her tolerance for spice was incredibly high. It made sense that she loved it and could handle a lot before becoming uncomfortable herself. Not everyone else was in the same boat as she was. And unfortunately, Rachel was in that category. “Flattery would be better, yes. I’m so sorry, truly.” Avery felt like a child being scolded now, her eyes unable to fully look up at the brunette. She nodded quietly as she talked. To be fair, Percy has always been the cook of the family. Sure, the writer would occasionally cook breakfast here and there. And sometimes, especially with her wife’s supervision, she’s been able to make something decent and edible. However, the raven-haired beauty wasn’t a cook at all. “... Are you feeling better? I have some Advil and Tums, if you need them.”

Logically she knew that she needed to finish the bite, “Half a bottle?!” Her mouth felt like it was on fire. “Ice cream,” she said, needing it now both out of want and necessity as she was speed walking towards where the ice cream food truck is. Her ears were ringing now as she knew her body was getting too old to be able to take this much spice. “I think you ruined my taste buds!” She said once she finally swallowed the bite. She knew she was being on the dramatic side, but she felt like she had the right to be with the way her mouth was practically tingling now. By the time they got to the ice cream truck, she was sweating and shaking.
“Whaaaat?! It wasn’t spicy before! I needed more spice...” Avery couldn’t help herself. She just loved spicy food. She has ever since she was a kid. “Y-Yeah, uh... Right this way.” Oh god, she felt so bad. Yet she also wanted to laugh so bad. Not because she was in pain or anything, obviously! But her reactions were quite funny. “Oh, Rach...” Quickly, getting to the ice cream food truck, she ordered a vanilla ice cream and paid for it. Finally, she was handed the treat and she gave it to her friend. “Here you go. I’m so sorry, babes. I truly thought that you could handle it...”

Rachel had been with Mars most of the day but had come once all the paintball festivities were done for the food. It was comical just how much paint Avery was covered in and she was looking around semi-hoping Charlie was here but also dreading the thought because he’d most likely be with Sophia. She had been mhm-ing and uh-huhing along with what Avery was saying as she picked up a nacho to eat it and realized just how much hot sauce was on it. Looking towards the woman she considered a younger sister now, a look of panic went across her face. With a mouthful of chip she said, “How much hot sauce did you put on these?!” Her hand was covering mouth as the spice was overwhelming present in her mouth.
She jumped slightly at her reaction, brows raising and lips pressing together. “About half a bottle,” she mused. Trying so hard to not laugh. For a moment, she had forgotten that not everyone could handle spicy food. “I wanted to add more, but I ran out. Do you need some milk? We can grab some ice cream or something. I guess I should have warned you beforehand... Oops.” Oops was beyond right. Of course, she felt bad. But on the bright side! It got Rachel to think of something else instead of Charlie! Okay, yeah, no. There are better ways to forget the person you’re in love with. “I’m so sorry... Let’s get you something. No more Avery Chopra-Zhao nachos for you.”
“Babe? Baby?” Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. Percy was just there. She was literally just there with her, the two roaming around and having a fun time. The last thing she remembered was laughing with her wife until her vision became blurry. She had stopped and mumbled to her wife, rubbing her eyes for a moment to try and get her vision back. After awhile, she finally did. Only to realize she lost her wife. The girl had been walking around quickly, trying to find her and feeling her nerves spike. Her phone had died already, otherwise she would’ve called or texted her in an instant. “Excuse me?” The tiny girl automatically walked up to someone, trying to smile in an attempt to ease her nerves. “May I borrow your phone real quick, please? I got separated from my wife and my own phone died awhile ago.”

“Have I ever told you how much I love nachos? Because I really, truly, deeply, love nachos.” The author moaned softly as she took a bite of one of her plethora of chips. Covered in cheese, meat, jalapenos, sour cream, cupped up olives and peppers, and hot sauce. So much hot sauce. Covered in paint, it was clear that Avery’s valiant efforts in the tournament was... ahem... admirable, to say the least. However, she got nachos and margaritas now. So it’s all good. “Seriously, do you think Perce would be up for us having a second wedding with a nachos bar? ‘Cause I think it would be a huge hit with people. Build Your Own Perfect Nacho or something.”

“It’s simple. You see someone getting close to one of our own, you trip ‘em.” He says it very naturally, and most matter-of-factly. “Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge. The gear’s heavy, people are off-balance. Then you shoot 'em and make a run for it. If you can use dirt as a diversion, feel free to. All is fair in paintball.” Declares the man, letting the words sink in for a minute before clearing his throat. “But, obviously, don’t hurt anyone for real and whatever.”
Avery nodded, listening intently. In one of Percy’s old shirts from college, a pair of camo pants, and combat boots, the girl was ready for battle. Hair up in a bun, black paint on her cheeks; She meant business. After all, this glory was important. For her wife. For her children, the one human and the three fur babies. For her family. For honor! Fortunately, the girl was very tiny. Something she was going to be able to use to her advantage. And yet... even if victory wasn’t hers... There was still one thing left to do. “Okay, boss. Just promise me something: tell my wife I love her if I don’t make it.”
