Working on a tight budget? Don’t sweat it. I’m going to help you overcome and conquer. The awesome part about running an event planning business is the profit potential is high even with a small investment. When I first started my marketing company many years ago, I didn’t have a hefty bankroll.
My available funds were fairly low, but that didn’t stop me from growing a successful business. How did I make that happen? There are many things that contributed to my success, but I believe the #1 key to growing my business had absolutely NOTHING to do with money. It had more to do with establishing relationships with clients.
I received many referrals from clients and built many long-lasting relationships. By doing so, I didn’t have to spend thousands of dollars prospecting. In this business, establishing relationships is the key to long-term success. The best way to promote your business is by keeping clients happy so they come back for more and refer you to friends.
There are many inexpensive ways to promote your event planning business…
Establishing relationships with current clients is important, but not everything. You can only make so much money on one client and the clients that person refers to you. So you need to focus on building a large pipeline of clients. Here’s how you can do it without a lot of cash:
Create a website and promote the heck out of it: An inexpensive website can be created, but it does need to look professional. You can start with a simple website and make improvements as you start earning money. A simple website is good enough to get started, just make sure the content is solid and the design is professional. Here are some tips to promote your site:
Get active on social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube). Interact with your following. Drop links to your website from time to time. Keep it interesting and engaging.
Create a blog. A blog is one of the best ways to prove you are an event planning expert. Create interesting blog posts that are beneficial to potential customers. For example, a good blog post idea for a wedding planner would be, “Best Places in (your city) to Get Married”.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you’re not familiar with SEO, it is the strategies used to get your website ranked high on Google for profitable keywords (i.e. “Busines Strategies”, “Small Business Startups”).
Get a boost from friends and family: There’s no shame in hitting up your friends and family members to do a little marketing for you. You don’t have to beg them to send referrals your way, but a simple, “I’m starting a business consultant company and would appreciate a referral if you know someone that needs an event planner” email works well. Of course, if these people are business owners, you should return the favor. I’m all about giving back to those that help me. It’s good karma!
Go at it alone: If you can’t afford to hire an assistant or full-time employee, no big deal. Until you get your business off the ground, you can save tons of money by working alone or enlisting an intern to work with you.
Event planning is an industry that really doesn’t require a massive investment. Like I always say, this business is perfect for anyone that wants the potential to make a lot without investing a lot. As always, I hope you found this post beneficial.
