2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

The movie touched briefly on the topic of aliens. These monoliths in the movie are questioned to be made by aliens. I wish there was more understanding of aliens or the monoliths but the audience is left in the dark.
Technology is shown throughout the film from space ships, to video calls, and help the humans getting necessities like food while in space. I would say that technology is a huge component within the movie as the audience starts to ask the question if technology is inherently evil? Will technology become so human they will take over human existence? We are left with these unanswered questions.
The movie has spaceships, space suits, and of course lots and lots of empty space. Space is the setting for the entire film as we go on this journey with these men.
The movie is based in a futuristic time period and shows a lot of interesting scenes depicting what the future could look like in 2001.
Characters development: 6/10
Heywood is the first human and scientist we encounter within the movie. We find out that he has a daughter and will not be home for her birthday because he has important business. He is for not telling others that they found a monolith. This is a secret mission he and other scientists are taking part of in the movie.
Months after the scientists inspect the monolith, they are found on a spaceship in pods waiting for the next part of their mission to Jupiter. We meet Bowman on this ship and we do not find out a lot about him. He likes to play draw and exercise. He befriends the computer Hal who controls the ship.
We do not find out much about Poole. We see him watch a video his parents sent him for his birthday and play chess with Hal.
Hal is a computer that controls the ship. He has the power to destroy lives as he is keeping the men alive in the pods. Hal mimics human emotion and sometimes this csn be scary realistic.
The music in the film is incredibly haunting and does a good job at giving the audience an eerie feeling.
For a film made in 1968, the affects and cinematography in the movie can be considered amazing.
The movie can be extremely slow and difficult to get through at some points. The pace of the movie was my least favorite part of the movie.
The movie does a good job at protraying science fiction including futuristic, technology, aliens, and space.
There are some good aspects of adventure throughout the film. The characters are on an adventure to a specific destination and are found to be traveling for most of the film.
I think there were some aspects of the movie that brought up some complex questions. Most of these questions are not answered. The ending of the film did not make much sense to me unless I did research which I ended up having to do. The very slow pace was difficult for me endure but because I grew up in the current fast paced world can you really blame me. I enjoyed the story with Hal and the crew and wish we had more of an explanation of the ending. I would say that the film concentrating more on the setting and science fiction elements than character development. The music was intense and the movie had an amazing score. I understand why people would say it is a classic movie.
