i do think some artists have shall we say unrealistic expectations about how much advertising of one's work that professional artists have basically always had to do. yes fighting for any scrap of recognition on social media is brutal and a full time job unto itself (and i have made posts to that effect) but like do you have any idea how much networking ass kissing self-advertising audience-serving and complex interpersonal politics you had to do to make as some wealthy lord's portrait painter in like the middle ages?? how much ass you had to often literally lick for your patron of the arts?? like girl it has never been a meritocracy. the artists throughout history that we know the best are not necessarily the most talented (however you could measure that), they were the best at branding.

this applies to any public facing industry btw from like academic scholarship to politics, even for things like medical advancements. what wins the day is not what is objectively best but what has the best PR.
