Ginger Snaps (2000) “Out by sixteen or dead on the scene, but together forever.”
hi, hi, hi! this blog is very cool beans! but i was just wondering, what is the difference between being deaf and hard of hearing, if there is one? like, can a hard of hearing person use hearing aids? can they still hear?
Hi!
There are two contexts differentiating between the labels of deaf and hard of hearing.
The first is the medical definition: deafness is specifically defined as hearing loss greater than 80 dB across a broad range of frequencies. Someone is hard of hearing if they don't meet this criteria in both ears, but have some degree of hearing loss. As you may imagine from this definition, "hard of hearing" is an extremely broad category, encompassing many different experiences and types of deafness/hearing loss.
Anyone with any degree of hearing loss may have/use hearing aids, although not everyone will, for a variety of reasons.
The second definition is cultural. In Deaf spaces, "hard of hearing" may also be a term someone uses to indicate they are oral and can converse with hearing people, or that they don't consider themselves fully or culturally Deaf, in addition to the medical definition. There are also people who have cochlear implants (which you must be medically profoundly deaf to qualify for) who consider themselves hard of hearing because they have CIs.
So really, it comes down to personal choice of how to identify. There are people with all ranges of hearing ability who identify as culturally Deaf. There are many people who are medically hard of hearing but prefer to call themselves deaf, or medically deaf who prefer to call themselves hard of hearing. There are people who have hearing loss who don't call themselves hard of hearing at all. It's really about how the person relates to their hearing and the Deaf community.
