My Anxiety’s Fantasy Land-An Introduction
Hello everyone! I hope you’re having a good day. :)
Throughout the *last year and a half* my anxiety has increased dramatically, and I’m positive that I’m not the only one! So I wanted to share a way that I found to combat and deal with the increasing pressure of this terrible world; I created a new one!Â
What I mean is that I have for awhile looked around at the world and felt despair, surrounded by politics and oil spills, but recently I have found something else to look at; the absolute beauty that sprawls around us in forms of vast jungles, tiny meadows encased in lush forests, air deserts the color of gold, etc. I jumped into learning about that beauty and I spent the beginning part of the pandemic taking up a new hobby (as everyone did) : geography. I can now proudly name every country in the world. It’s one of my only talents! so i’m very excited about it.Â
But learning about different countries and regions of the world really segued into a broader understanding of culture and religion, of plant life and cuisine, of art and the patterns of history. And interestingly, I found that delving into the wacky idiosyncrasies of various places in the world really settled my anxiety!Â
So I started developing the world that one of my WIPs takes place in. A first it was nothing but the shadow of a place; a dark, sprawling forest with a potential name. Maybe there were plans for some clouds. But as I considered and learned about the various intricacies of real cultures and places I began to consider how those elements would look like in my WIPs world; what do the trees look like? how to people say hello? what’s the proper time for dinner time? are people superstitious, and what of?
These questions have led to have a fairly fleshed out fantasy land, full of different countries, philosophies, histories! And whenever I feel anxious, or like the world is surrounding me a little to much, I mentally hop over to my fantasy land and my anxiety can relax as she/it contemplates the various aspects of existence in an entirely false place, where I have utter control and there are no real consequences.
This has been a highly useful mental exercise (?) that has allowed me to have a bit of escape since the pandemic and to just really stretch my creative muscles. I have even really taken up writing, and I think that this exercise will expand as I continue to add characters, places, and implement ideas!
But I wanted to start this blog so that I could share this fun idea and have a safe space to ramble about world building. Stick around if you want to ramble too! I would love to hear your ideas :)
