It was all Beth could do to keep from lashing out at her boss. She did forget to tell him about the slight change in plans this morning, but that sure as hell did not warrant the tongue lashing she had received from him. She was becoming accustomed to it, though, because they happened almost daily. Her boss was just an angry man, and he always had been. “Yes, Mr. Thorne,” she drawled in a monotone. She waited for his door to be closed before she spoke again. “Asshole.”
Today was the day the new interns would arrive, and no one was too excited for that. It was always the same. A group of bright-eyed, passionate people would leave in less than a month with their souls crushed. Only one or two ever made it out of here with their dignity intact. A few moments later the said interns arrived, and took a seat as per Beth’s request. She kept her back straight and her posture confident as she walked into his office without bothering to knock. That always pissed him off, and pissing him off was fun. “The interns are here.”
Connor sat down at his desk and rubbed his temples slowly, already tired from yelling but knew there was probably going to be more. He turned on his computer and started his daily routine, he wrote a few emails and made a few phone calls but honestly his mind was elsewhere. The thought of interviewing interns was still in the back of his mind and it was one that he wasn’t sure he wanted to be thinking about, especially since it was one of his least favorite times of the year.
He glanced up when Beth entered his office without so much as a knock to announce the arrival of the interns. He sighed and groaned loudly before glaring at the girl standing in his doorway. “Did you idiotic parents forget to teach you how to knock on a goddam door or are you just that stupid?” He asked angrily. “And while you stand there trying to figure out how to respond to that question, might I ask where the hell my morning coffee was this morning? Or is your brain too small to remember such simple tasks?” He demanded. “Just send the first interviewer in and try not to fuck up anymore shit.”
Beth rolled her eyes as he spoke, and waited for him to finish with a bored look on her face. When he finally concluded, she walked out without so much as an apology. As she moved towards the interns a smile began to grow on her face. Sometimes it was fun to see him pissed off. Stopping at her desk to swipe up her clipboard, she began to address the group. “Um,” she paused to find the name, “Aaron Harper. You’re up first, follow me.”
After their quick conversation on the way to Mr. Thorne’s door, Beth learned that while he was nice, he was too nice to get far in this business. Especially in the harsh environment that Mr. Thorne cultivated. To be as successful as her boss you needed to be ruthless, cunning, and a lot of the time you needed to lack empathy. This kid definitely wasn't any of those things. When they arrived at the door she knocked, to keep up the appearances that her boss adored so much.
