Hey nerds, remember that rad indie subscription comic website that I said I was involved in a few months ago? Well, it’s now up and running! An Open Letter To My Readers

Dear friends, 

I’ve come to the conclusion that Awkward Shelby as a project has to come to a close. The past almost five years have been marvelous. I’ve enjoyed meeting so many new people through this comic and making a name for myself with it. 

I started Awkward Shelby the summer that I graduated from high school as a way to cope with losing my father, my living situation, college, and finally transitioning into adulthood. But through this comic I was able to talk about my true feelings as an artist, as someone with depression and anxiety, and overall come to terms with my gender identity, which led me to meet so many amazing people and do incredible things. 

Awkward Shelby as an entity will never die because I am Awkward Shelby. This comic has allowed me to embody my true self and feel confident in who I am. Honestly, this comic has given me so much strength and love for myself.

Since I am no longer in school and am moving on to new things, Awkward Shelby will come to a close. At least the webcomic will, but I am still here making art and am always drawing self portraits in one way or another. 

It’s been a fun ride. Thanks for reading.

For a long time I hated my name as well, but after realizing it’s a pretty interesting gender neutral name and there’s a badass car with the same name, I decided to stick with it. I’m glad I could help you with that as well. You’re awesome!

What are some of the best memories you had from SFUAD?

not many are connected to the school but rather the people I met there like:

when all my friends said my roommate and I were married freshman year and then she referred to my car as “ours” unintentionally one day

all of the times @biscuitprince and I would dress up stupid and burst into our friends’ rooms and dance, remember that @coquiwi?

playing in the snow on campus, especially with @goatsareallineed and when I pulled down my pants in the snow and my ass was just as white as the ice

doing posters and shirt designs for quadstock

meeting some rad people and collaborating with them

and of course I could go on all day because some of my best memories are from when I attended SFUAD, but we’ll save that for a rainy day

!!!! do you mind telling me what sfuad was like?? *O* pros? cons? i went to a college fair today and i fell in loooveee with it. thank you so much!

It’s pretty okay, but I’m not sure it’s for everyone, but definitely worth the time I went there. All of the professors are working artists in their field and have professional experience outside the classroom, so they know what is up. 

I just couldn’t afford it anymore and things kinda’ fell through for other reasons, but it’s a pretty good school as far as the academics go, especially if you are a film or studio arts major because that’s what Santa Fe/New Mexico is known for. Not sure it’s worth all of the money you pay for it though. 

As far as student life goes, the people that run the school kind of suck at taking care of their students. They tend to sweep big issues like sexual assault and things under the rug, dorms are always falling apart, security is questionable, there’s not too many lights on campus, and stupid shit like that. At least the cafeteria has some dietary options *sarcastic woo* The school seems to spend money on unneccessary things like redoing the cafeteria and not actually building students nice studio spaces or giving them more supplies to compensate for your studio fees, but what do I know? I haven’t been there in like a semester and a half almost.
