A Few Changes...
Hi everyone! I hope you’ve all been well! The last you guys saw of this blog, we had that thing where Careen Ingle, one of the Unikitty showrunners, posted a tweet confirming that she’d been writing with the intent of Master Frown being an adult and Unikitty being a child. This led to a lot of drama and pedophillia accusations being thrown about, and I wrote up a post discussing staff inconsistencies, show inconsistencies, and the concept of death of the author. And then I took a break from the blog to give everything time to simmer down and think about how I personally felt about those things. How much importance people put into things showrunners say outside of a show but don’t actually include in a show varies wildly from person to person. While I’m likely to see something a showrunner says as “bonus” information that I can accept or ignore as I see fit, it’s clear a lot of the Unikitty fandom sees Ingle’s comments as law and is no longer comfortable with Unifrown as a romantic ship because of it. There has been noticeably less romantic Unifrown content since Ingle’s tweet, and that’s fine. I am not here to police how anybody else feels about death of the author just as I don’t want them to try and police me about it, and thankfully it looks like the fandom is taking a similar “live and let live” approach to this. That, or people are being really good at deleting anon hate instead of feeding it. Either way, nice. If this was a normal shipping blog, that’d be the end of the discussion. But this blog has always been a little but different due to one thing: I never made AwYeahUnifrown to just be about romantic shipping in the first place. I didn’t start this blog just to ship Unikitty and Master Frown romantically. In fact, Unifrown as a romantic ship is actually pretty low on my list of ships (I’m sorry if that seems like a massive betrayal to some of y’all.) I started this blog because I like Unikitty and Master Frown’s dynamic in any way, shape, or form. I like them as friends, frenemies, or enemies just as much, if not more, than I actually “ship” them. Every piece of “Unifrown” content I’ve made myself for this blog - fall those image sets I’ve made for each episode where they interact - can be seen as platonic. It just seemed like, since I didn’t DISLIKE them as a romantic ship, also reblogging romantic content and calling it a “Unifrown blog” made sense. But now, with this situation, I get the feeling there’s a lot of people who only want to see Unikitty and Master Frown platonically, and I want to respect those people. I want to make it so people can enjoy the content I make featuring Unikitty and Master Frown being platonic dorks without also needing to see a romantic ship they may no longer be comfortable with. While I’m sure many people will blacklist #Unifrown altogether, I’d like to keep tagging platonic content as #Unifrown because people who ship Unifrown will still enjoy seeing that content. So here’s what I’m going to do:
Any posts or reblogs on AwYeahUnifrown that feature Unikitty and Master Frown interacting in a way that can only be seen as romantic will now be given the tag #Unifromance so they can easily be blacklisted.
The blog’s description has also been updated to mention this tag and detail how this blog is about Unikitty and Master Frown in ANY sort of relationship - friends, enemies, or lovers. And this is the last I hope to say on the matter! And by “hope” I mean real talk here just for a second, and with any luck this will never come up again: Like I said before, drama about this seems to have died down and the haters seem to have moved on, so I’m not expecting this blog to deal with a lot of harassment on this issue. However, there’s the slim chance this blog becoming active again when everyone is very bored at home could inspire a new wave of ship-to-ship combat. I've been around in fandom long enough that I don’t give much mind to anon hate. If all I get is a few rude people showing up in my inbox that need deleted and blocked, it’ll be dealt with quietly. However... Well, if get thrown into the middle of a cyberbully-laden ship war and run out of the patience to not clap back... All I’m saying is I clap back hard.
