I redrew everything, by the way, hahaha. I'm really happy with how this turned out, I was surprised by it myself. Of course, I was listening to the entire album back to back as I drew and was crying by the end because I just love this fictional man so much and the songs hit me in a way that turns my face into a waterpark.

“Let’s go, Light-kun,” says L as Light jams on his protective helmet, turning to stride towards the doors. Light had not previously been aware that it was possible to slouch confidently. Ryuga is a study in contradictions.

…Wait.

“Ryuga?”

L stops, turns.

“You said Higuchi could kill with just a face now.” Light picks up a spare helmet. “Aren’t you going to put this on?”

“No,” L says. “I’ve instructed the police to bring a large industrial light to shine behind me. I won’t be visible in the glare.”

He says this so smoothly that for a second, it almost sounds reasonable.

“…Isn’t it safer to just wear a helmet?”

“No.”

“Why,” says Light.

L somehow manages to convey a pout solely through voice as he says, “Light-kun is free to wear one if he wants.”

“I know that.”

L holds his gaze for a second longer, then rolls his eyes upward.

“I don’t like wearing those. It makes the air stale.”

“Oh,” says Light.

“Honestly,” the voice-only pout is developing further, “I don’t know how you can stand it, Light-kun. Another one of your amazing talents.”

Light scowls. “Don’t joke around.”

“I would never.” Liar. “Now let’s go. I wouldn’t want to keep the task force waiting.”

…

Light takes off his helmet.

“What are you doing,” says L.

Light smiles at him. “That industrial light should be large enough for two, right?”

“It’s you who said we shouldn’t risk our comrades’ lives.” L tilts his head, owl-like. “Please put it back on.”

“I’m only risking my life as much as you’re risking yours,” Light retorts.

“But you don’t have a reason for it.”

“I do.” Light steps forward, emboldened. “I told you, I want to catch Kira with you. So let me do this. We should find the answer together.”

L stares.

“…What?” Light asks.

“You really are something,” L says, and finally smiles. It’s the same smile he wears around the clock, bright and cruel and sweet in turn, so the fondness in it is an invention of Light’s mind. “Okay. Together.”

physical memories of L are hard to come by. no one had ever taken his picture, and he didn't own anything that someone could want to take as a keepsake. he didn't leave much at all behind except for his name. this is what Light reverently and meticulously tears out of the death note, folds up, and keeps with him. with Watari dead and Misa having forgotten L's name, he is the only person alive who knows it, and that is better than any photograph. is this anything
