There’s a scrawled note on Aylin’s door. Out of town, back at some point — xoxo Aylin. Stevie took it upon herself to write it.
“I guess you’re right.” J.P. chuckled at the comment. “Maybe my mom can trade secrets with her to help her?” He offered.
“She can try to,” Aylin replied with a slight laugh. “Our mother isn’t too keen on advice.” Stevie nodded, “She’d rather blow up our kitchen than listen to someone else telling her what to do–” “She’s a very headstrong woman,” Aylin interrupted.
J.P. just nodded as he heard Aylin heading back towards the den. “Thanks for the loving support,Aylin. But I did tell you mom is pretty amazing at all things food related.”
“Everyone says that about their mum to be polite, but you actually weren’t kidding,” Aylin pointed out. “She’s right,” Stevie chimed in, “We say that all the time about our mum but she’s a terrible baker.”
“You’re welcome."J.P.chuckled at her response. "Even if she does I can handle it. After all she stuck around knowing my situation.”
“Good point,” Stevie agreed, hearing Aylin finishing up in the kitchen. “And don’t worry about asking her questions. She won’t like it, but afterwards I think she’ll appreciate having someone else to talk to.” And with that, Aylin came back into the room with a large chunk of cake, “Your mum is definitely my favorite McCoy. This is the best cake I’ve ever had.”
J.P. nodded as he listened to Stevie. He had noticed Aylin seemed much more on edge lately. “Sure. If I don’t physically call her I’ll have Jericho do it for me. He doesn’t ask questions and he knows Aylin is important to me now. ”
“Good, thank you,” Stevie nodded with a smile. Chuckling, she added, “Hopefully she won’t give you all too much grief.”
J.P. just nodded as Aylin left the room saying she’d be back in a few. “Oh well I suppose that makes sense. But as long as you are in the McCoy house you’ll have whatever you need. My mom will make sure of that.” That was one good thing he could say about his house there was always plenty of food.
Stevie nodded, glad that he’d brought up their being in good hands. This made her job easier, and with her sister gone, she knew that could say everything she needed to. "I'm sure you've noticed already, but Aylin is more on edge lately. I'm going to have to go away on business for a few days and I need you all to make sure that she's okay,” she explained, her voice having gotten lower to keep from being overheard. “I wouldn’t ask this of you if I didn’t have to but... can you call her everyday to check in? She’ll hate it and complain but it’s important. And if she doesn’t pick up, call me immediately.”
“Yes there’s cake. Marble with homemade buttercream. She probably is in the kitchen making me something to eat..to make sure I do eat.” J.P. let out a chuckle. “Rarely had cake? We also have cake for our birthdays or special occasions.” He shook his head still not believing the fact they rarely had cake growing up.
Aylin didn’t hesitate at his words and was up and out of the room in a second, throwing a “be back in a few” over her shoulder as she went. “Growing up, we travelled a lot, especially after Aylin was born,” Stevie explained, understanding J.P.’s confusion. “There wasn’t much time to celebrate birthdays, let alone get a cake. Not when we didn’t even know if we’d be home to eat it or near the bakery to pick it up.”
J.P. shook his head a small smirk on his face. “Well…it still means a lot that you stick around. Also I’m pretty sure mom made a cake so if you guys want any just say the word.”
At the mention of cake, Aylin straightened up. “There’s cake? Is your mum in the kitchen? Or I could get it myself if she’s busy and wouldn’t mind.” Stevie chuckled at her sister’s antics. “She likes cake, can you tell? We rarely had it growing up and somehow that created this,” Stevie gestured to her sister for emphasis.
J.P. enjoyed the two sisters interacting it was a lot like his relationship with Jericho and Jetta. “When I’m not sick or complaining about it. But thanks for thinking that,Aylin.”
“It’s all relative,” Aylin shrugged, smirk still in place. “You aren’t sick or complaining at least a third of the time.”
“If you two say so.” J.P. gave them a small smile. “I don’t know about that,Aylin is pretty good company.”
“Since when were you good company, Wolf?” Stevie laughed, only to receive a chuckle from Aylin. “Apparently there's one of us who breaks the mold,” Aylin smugly said to her sister, a smirk playing across her lips. “Thanks J.P., you’re pretty good company too.”
“Okay. ” J.P. replied simply knowing she was only putting up with the movie for the sake of her sister. “I’m sorry I’m not being a very good host.”
“No, you are. You’re sick, it’s understandable and Stevie’s watching the first movie she actually likes in America.” Stevie nodded to back up her sister’s point, “Really, this is great. Glades aren’t known for being great company.”
“Oh really?” J.P. questioned his voice still full of sleep. “We can put something else on if you want?”
Aylin thought for a moment, looking over at her sister who she knew would never let her live down refusing to complete a movie, before shaking her head. “No, we can keep going. I was just checking.”
J.P. had dozed off for a few minutes. So it took him a few minutes to register what Aylin said. “Are you even giving it a chance?”
“Yes, it’s had exactly fifteen minutes,” Aylin confidently replied, eyeing time to confirm that she’d gotten it right. “Quality films usually only require ten.”
J.P. situated himself on the couch and closed his eyes a bit. “Yeah. Good.”
Aylin was quiet for a solid ten minutes, trying to figure out what J.P. and her sister liked so much about the film, but nearing the fifteen minute mark she was running out of ideas. “So... it picks up soon, right?”
