The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby I am fascinated by the female characters in The Great Gatsby. I am thinking of writing my paper through a feminist lends. The quote " I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool – that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." When I read this quote I was disturbed and deeply troubled. I think this quote was my inspiration for my paper topic. I think the female characters in the book had extremely strong roles . I want to dig deeper into Daisy, Jordan, and Myrtle. I believe that they are each extremely complex and unique characters. I also want to bring in the Movie versions to help support my ideas. In addition, the female characters help drive the plot of the novel.
Nick
Nick is extremely observant and picks up on things that most people would not pick up on. Nick pays close attention to details. He tries to paint a picture by using words; He uses his writing to describe a complete scene that the audience can envision in their minds. I am also pretty observant and notice things that my friends do not pick up on. I am very detail oriented.
I also found it interesting that the book’s title is The Great Gatsby. I was a bit surprised because Nick is the narrator. The book is written from Nick’s perspective, yet it is named for Gatsby. The title of the book helps demonstrate how much Nick truly cared for Gatsby. It is a beautiful and selfless act to name the book after his dear friend. “Nick” could have named the book anything, but the chose to name the book in a way to give honor and respect to Gatsby.

Objectivity
“Miss Baker and I exchanged a short glance consciously devoid of meaning. I was about to speak when she sat up alertly and said ‘Sh!’ in a warning voice. A subdued impassioned murmur was audible in the room beyond and Miss Baker leaned forward, unashamed, trying to hear. The murmur trembled on the verge of coherence, sank down, mounted excitedly, and then ceased altogether.” The interaction does not seem to be purely objective.
Reading Chapter One of Gatsby helped me evacuate my own interactions with my friends and peers. Sometimes when I interact with people it is because it is to my advantage to have them as friends. The idea of talking to someone to use them is horrible, but I believe on some level we all do it. It is honestly awful to be used and taken advantage of, but we all do it to others and then complain and feel sorry for ourselves when it happens to us. We should try to break the cycle. The word murmur in The Great Gatsby is extremely important. Murmur is defined as “a soft, indistinct sound made by a person or group of people speaking quietly or at a distance.” It is fascinating word choice by Fitzgerald.

The Great Gatsby
The Narrator is Nick. He brings up advice his father gave him which makes us relate to him since most people have their parents giving them advice at one point or another. He also brings up his family which makes what he is saying relatable to the reader. He also talks about not judging people which make the audience like him. Nick also gives a lot of details to help the reader picture what he is saying. He also uses word like “chance” which adds to the validity of what he is saying. I think we believe him because he sounds like a genuine person. In the first few pages the reader is informed about money involved and the location of the book. The old money verses new money feud is represented by the house descriptions. Gatsby’s house looks tacky because he wants to make his house look like rich old money.
Against Chill- Reaction
The article really resonated with me. The more I look at my peers in relationships, the more I see how the girls act extremely submissively and as being agreeable to almost everything their boyfriends say without ever questioning anything or giving their own opinions. For some reason people just want to blend in and “go with the flow”. Being silent is just not in my nature. As a child I was very quiet, I had lost my voice. Now that I am older and braver I do not take my words for granted. We only get one life, do not waste it by living for someone else. We all have our own mind and thoughts, use them!

My Purim Experience

I had one heck of a night! I went with my friend David to my English Professor’s synagogue in the city for Purim. It was the first time I was in a non-Orthodox synagogue. I really liked the egalitarian seating. In the year 2016 I believe that it is only right to have women and men sitting together and not to have women pushed to the back and forgotten about behind a curtain. I also appreciated the fact that they had women leading prayers and women making announcements. I believe that men and women are equals and should be treated as such. I have heard people make the argument that due to tradition we must keep seating separate, but some things are simply wrong and outdated and should be adjusted and made right. For me going to this synagogue was really eye opening. I very much enjoyed the liveliness and energy of the synagogue. I felt like the people wanted to be there and were not just there out of obligation like many other synagogues I've been to. I also enjoyed the instruments and singing to tunes I recognized. I am a part of JLF at Queens College (Jewish Learning Fellowship) where we are learning to address life and religion’s "big questions." I plan on sharing my experience and asking some big questions!
Xenophobia
Xenophobia is the fear of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange.
Areas of the play to discuss:
1) Why does Juliet not feel Xenophobia towards Romeo? Here she seems to feel that a name is just a name and not a way to define a person

2) Why does Juliet at first take Tybalt’s side but later side with Romeo?
“Blistered be thy tongue For such a wish! He was not born to shame. Upon his brow shame is ashamed to sit, For ’tis a throne where honor may be crowned. Sole monarch of the universal earth, Oh, what a beast was I to chide at him!”
3) Why does the hatred extend from the Masters to the servants?
SAMPSON “A dog of that house shall move me to stand. I will take the wall of any man or maid of Montague’s.”
4) What was Romeo thinking after he found out he loved his enemy? ROMEO ”Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt.”
Favorite Songs from the Soundtrack
The first song that resonated with me was “Radiohead.” This song has an awesome sound. There is an undertone of deep sadness in this song. The song reminds me of Romeo in the beginning of the play, struck with sadness over Rosaline. The song was an excellent choice for the movie.
I really enjoyed Garbage – “#1 Crush”. This song has an enjoyable beat. The song has an eerie haunting ring to it, which I dig. I was really appreciating the intensity of the song. The lyrics and the way it sounds are very extreme and intense, which relates to the intensity of Romeo and Juliet’s love story.
Lastly, I enjoyed the song “Everybody's Free” which was sung beautifully. This song really gave me chills. The whole idea of “everybody’s free” is a huge concept in the play. Juliet has to be herself and defies her parents in order to be free. Also, there is a theme in the play of whether the lovers acted with their own freewill or whether they fulfilled a predestined fate. The song “Everybody's Free” really made me think about those ideas.
Heartbreak and Moving Forward
We were in “love”, What went wrong? Why did you dispose of Our relationship that was once so strong?
