SANS UNDERTALE IS A 4FT TALL LITTLE WANKSTAIN WHO MAKES FART JOKES AND COLLECTS SOCKS WITH STUPID PATTERNS ON THEM. HE SLEEPS ON A MATTRESS ON THE FLOOR AND CONSTANTLY EATS OUT TO HANG WITH HIS WORK FRIENDS. HE KEEPS HIS BROTHER'S LETTERS TO SANTA FOR GYFTMAS AND HE MET A WOMAN THROUGH A DOOR IN THE FOREST AND HAS COME BACK TO TALK TO HER EVERY DAY SINCE SO SHE WOULDN'T FEEL BONELY ANYMORE. HE BOUGHT A TREADMILL JUST TO PRANK A HYPOTHETICAL TIME TRAVELER AND HE MAKES GROSS NOISES WHILE EATING TO MAKE HIS BEST FRIEND LAUGH, HE HELPS ALPHYS TAKE CARE OF THE AMALGAMATES AND HE HAS A PHOTO ALBUM FULL OF PEOPLE HE LOVES AND HAS LOST, LOCKED AWAY IN HIS WORKSHOP. HE IS NEVER GOING TO SEE THEM AGAIN. HE IS NEVER GOING HOME.

AND STILL HE WOULD WATCH YOU TAKE AWAY EVERYTHING HE HAS LEFT AND LIVE IN A POST APOCALYPTIC DYSTOPIAN ANARCHY WITHOUT LIFTING A FINGER, ALL TO KEEP HIS PROMISE TO A WOMAN HE HAS NEVER SEEN.

And he is a silly, ridiculous, profoundly sad little man who's lost so much already and—i cannot stress this enough— he saw something that could play with time like a toy, saw something changing timelines trying again and again and again to achieve Something and thought "i know that desperation. i know that helplessness. i can help".

even if you don't believe in the otherworld theory or you don't care about the photo album AND the "you'll never see 'em again" comment, and attribute all of his nihilism and depression solely to resets, he still LOOKED AT THE VERY CAUSE OF HIS PROBLEMS AND CHOSE TO OFFER IT KINDNESS.

look. sans is Not perfect. far from it, he's a very flawed character, and I'm the first guy to analyze the greyness in his actions and morality when the discussion calls for it. he is not a great man. he is not a hero. but when i see these types of comments i swing my battle axe into the air and i shatter the discussion table in two because HE IS A GOOD MAN GODDAMIT. HE'S... HE'S A GOOD GUY. I WILL BITE YOU.

I think a surprising amount of writers don’t realize that tragedies are supposed to be cathartic. They’re intended to result in a purging of emotion, a luxurious cry; the sorrow caused by a great tragedy is akin to fear caused by a good horror movie – it’s a “safe” sorrow, one that is actually satisfying to the audience. It can still be beautiful! It’s isn’t supposed to just be salting the earth so nothing can grow.

But that’s how you get grimdark: writers who don’t realize that they’re supposed to be doing something with the audience instead of to the audience.

#i once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people you’re supposed to#empathize with and see yourself in#and that the catharsis comes from seeing someone’s life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you#‘this story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you don’t succeed your attempts matter’#grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters#well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much#your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending#or if you lose it along the way#people have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not#and in a reality that has no concept of ‘fair’ that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! it’s COMFORTING

thinking about werewolves and the concept of becoming a monster and discovering that something savage and uncontrollable exists within you and the potential that has to be a liberating narrative about growth and change and courage rather than a story about controlling and concealing it

Being a werewolf is about shame. I think it’s also about anger, trauma, not belonging, and the fear that you might be unlovable.

The shame of being a werewolf has to be that you were bitten by the wolf, and you survived. You survived because you became the wolf yourself. You are this terrible, monstrous thing, and the terrible, monstrous thing is you. It’s the part of you that survives the attack, and it’s terrifying that this is you.

I feel like werewolves are people who are very hurt. Not only that, they’ve spent their lives up to this point trying as hard as they can being whatever the opposite of a werewolf is—something tame, something yielding, something that’s not angry and unpredictable and bestial. But the Wolf is also them. Because no matter how much you don’t believe it, you want to make it. You want to survive, and you will fight so that you will live.

Or werewolves are people who are incredibly afraid. It’s about the inevitability of not being lovable; being a monster is unforgivable. It’s about the inability to withstand anything that will happen to you. It’s about your body betraying you. It’s about carrying a terrible and ugly you inside you, locked up where no one can see it, because the thought of anyone else seeing that you is unbearable. It’s about all of those things and more.

I think the Wolf is the part of you that loves you, unconditionally. It’s the part of you that bites when something tries to hurt you. When something tries to put you back in the place you’re supposed to be. Of course it’s scary. It’s scary to find that you are impossibly strong and maybe selfish, and that your self-hatred isn’t enough to save you from the savage, stubborn knot of self-love you carry in your chest. But it’s also the answer to that question: What if I am awful? What if I am terrible, too terrible to look at, too terrible to love? What if you are a monster? Well, what then?
