“Not the first time the city’s had to rebuild from nearly the ground up.” Lena noted with a small sigh. And it probably won’t be the last. She mused privately. She tried not to voice such pessimism, knowing most people didn’t need to hear it in the wake of such tragedy.

“They say when you break a bone it grows back stronger. Is that the same for a city? Or is it like a mirror - shatter it enough and the pieces never quite go back together the right way.” Az glanced over at the woman who radiated her own aura of authority. Impressive.

Amaya’s eyes grew sad as she looked around at the wreckage among the city. It was really a wonder any of the business managed to thrive, what with the peace never lasting for too long. “Perhaps that’s a sign you needn’t leave,” Amaya greeted the man who also seemed to be surveying as she was. “I wonder who was the cause of it this time. If only there was a way to stop this for good.”

Az looked down at the soot on his hands, rubbing his fingers together with a slightly disgruntled expression. “I resigned my post of guardian angel a long time ago and I have no desire to take it up again.” he wiped the dirt off on his jeans. “There will always be evil in the world, there’s no way to stop it for good. Sorry to disappoint.”

“well, i guess if it’s not as bad as actual hell…” rory’s arms crossed over her chest though with a chuckle at az’s not so tasteful choice of words, “this is not even the worst of it.” rory sighed as she ran her fingers over her newly inked arm, now healed over. “but we’ll rebuild, right?”

Aurora. Az turned to face his friend with a large grin. “Did you have a hand in this? Cause I gotta say that would be pretty....” he let out a low whistle as he leaned in and observed her new ink. “badass. Looks like you’ve upgraded some since I saw you last.”

“hell is a little extreme. according to recent news the only thing can compare to an actual hell on earth are the wildfires. and it’s ironic, because fire, i wonder how fire and hell came to be interrelated.” carrie cradled her redbull as she swung one of her heelies against the ground, “there’s another coffee shop a few blocks from here.”

“Love, you don’t know of the fires of hell or you wouldn’t speak so caviler about it.” Az turned to the blonde and scoffed at her mention of coffee. It was not the drink he was lamenting, if he even was lamenting anything at all.

The impact of dissatisfaction was swift and steadfast, bringing a sagging disappointment to Ada’s straightened limbs. As she faced the boarded windows, her demeanor gradually deteriorated into a small pout. This undoubtedly disrupted her morning routine, and Ada’s routine was critical. The man’s voice startled her, her gaze shifting to his form curiously. Perhaps his lamentations were just as justified as her own. Frankly, she had no idea what he meant and began to feel as like she was missing a hidden message. “Well the statistical probability of another disaster striking the city given its history of calamities was high so I suppose you shouldn’t be surprised” she offered, her own discontent concealed underneath her typical neutral contenance. Ada preferred this establishment especially because the personnel were familiar with her and unconcerned with her exceedingly specific order. 

Ada had narrowed her tastes down to a complex, sophisticated science and rarely stray from these particulars. It was one of the reasons she dreaded eating out; it took her far too long to analyze and interpret the information she acquired on a menu, to construct her ’this but not that unless this’ framework. Not to add that she frequently came across as fussy and selective…which she was. The list of restaurants she mentally sanctioned as safe to order from was limited; places where she didn’t have to explain why she constantly wanted to double check if there were three or two sugars. Why she want ice cream on the side rather than on the pie. Why she cut her salads counter clockwise. While the restoration of the modest coffee shop may have been catastrophic for some in the grand scheme of the city’s destruction, it was personally devastating to her in an entirely different manner. 

“I’ve come to the conclusion that Central City is an epicenter for misfortune” sighing in resignation that she’d have to buy her tea someplace else. “I don’t believe in hell but it’s an interesting comparison” 

Az turned as his musings were answered by voices besides his own thoughts and the corners of his mouth turned up a bit in amusement as she presented him with facts and statistics. Those never really held much weight where he was from but he knew humans desired logic and a sense of control. “And yet you seemed troubled by this likely probability,” he noted, turning to face her as he observed her more closely.

“This city does attract many, whether they be friend or foe, so I’ll agree with that statement. Where good resides evil is never far behind to disrupt it.” He cocked his head to the side and raised an eyebrow at her next statement, unable to hide a knowing smirk. “Ah, so we’re an nonbeliever are we?”

She’d know that voice anywhere. “I think we both know Hell is a lot closer than most think, isn’t that right, Asmodel?” Tamiel would’ve almost missed him if it wasn’t for his celestial aura. Angels can always find their own, fallen or no. But he looked so human. It was unnerving. “It’s been a while.”

Az turned on a heel as a long familiar voice broke through the thousands, a smirk curling across his lips as he recognized his fellow angel. Tamiel. “Unfortunately so. On both accounts.” Stepping up to her, he cocked his head to the side curiously. “What brings you to this god forsaken place?”

“I leave for a little bit and the whole city goes to hell. Well, not quite literally hell because it would take a lot to be that bad, but still.” Asmodel let out a low whistle as he ran his hand over a boarded up storefront, clearly trying to renovate and clean up since the last wave of destruction. Humans really were fickle creatures.

Tommy’s eyebrow raised at the question, a little dazed by the sudden change in topic. He thought for a second about the things he’d seen over the last few years, trying to figure out how to answer. “Look around. There are people who can break the sound barrier without even trying. Anyone who says they don’t is kidding themselves.”

Az waited patiently for his words to trickle through the liquor in Tommy’s system, a slow grin spreading across his features at his answer. “Good answer. Means you don’t scare easily.”

“Some more welcome than others,” Lucifer commented with a wry smile across at his brother. Another sip of his drink was taken as the back and forth between the other two continued. He could see his brother wasn’t about to let go of this quickly, the sight of wings on someone who had no idea how to use them obviously vexing to the younger angel. “Flying isn’t just about flapping and hoping. You have to take into account thermals, wind direction, gravity. You definitely don’t leap off a building and try using them like a parachute.”

“dick. dick grayson.” he reiterated as he nodded in the angel’s direction – he chuckled as he bowed his head - he felt like he could hear his father’s voice, instructing him on proper postures and force to use in his jumps and landings, how the turns required a specific amount of tensile strength. sometimes, when they performed outdoors they had to count all the elements as well. the way lucifer spoke about it, it reminded him a lot of the way his feet left the platform and the gust of wind beneath his arms as he surged through the air, hanging and turning on the trapeze, feet off the ground. 

“i’m actually familiar with a lot of that…” dick finally responded before he drew in a deep breath, “so wind strength and direction, gravity, i got that down. i used to do it all the time with the trapeze.” dick didn’t elaborate further though he could already feel his excitement build again, “now what?”

Az didn’t miss the smile on his brother‘s face and he cleared his throat, rolling his shoulders as he adjusted his jacket in effort to brush it off. His gaze wandered as he turned his attention elsewhere while his brother explained the intricacies of flying. He was a joke to the universe, he was certain of it now - bastards.

“Sounds like you should be a natural then.” he commented offhandedly, but he couldn’t very well tell his brother to assist the man and then not give his own support. “Try levitating first - it’s virtually impossible to die from barely a foot in the air. It will teach you control.”

Tom watched the other man carefully, trying to figure out what was going on inside his head. He placed his own hand on top of Az’s, acutely aware of how close they were to each other now. “I’m Tommy.”

Az’s eyes followed the movements of the intoxicated cute man in front of him, his gaze flickering down to his hand on his before meeting his eyes once more. “Tommy.” Good to know a name at least. “So tell me Tommy. Do you believe in the supernatural?”

Tommy couldn’t help but blush when he felt Az’s hand come to rest on his knee, a small smile creeping on to his face. “Listen handsome, judging from that face there’s like at most five years between us, so I’d strongly recommend you refrain from calling me kid.” He said with a smirk, moving his seat slightly closer to Az’s.

At most five years between us....Az chuckled, unable to stop from smirking because that was quite a bit far off from the truth. But by human standards, sure, he wasn’t wrong exactly. “Okay so what should I call you? You haven’t really given me a name to work with...”

rory flinched as he turned to face her, still squirming though her attempts faltered as she stared up at him helplessly, “you won’t let me go.” she let broken whisper fall past her lips as she swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat, “i don’t…even know you, and you won’t let me go.” her voice trembled as tears threatened to spill over.

Az paused at her tone, his grip lessening as he realized he was scaring her. She really didn’t recognize him. What did she wish for exactly? To be younger? Did the imp de-age her? Taking a breath, he figured the best way to approach this was calmly  and one step at a time. “Okay, how about this. I will let go of you if you promise not to run away. Deal?”

“Oh really? What a coincedence.” Tommy said with a smirk, inching slightly closer to the other man before leaning to whisper in his ear. “Because this beautiful thing, loves to be appreciated.” Tommy knew he was being a bit full on, but with the alcohol numbing his inhibitions, he was in the mood to have a little fun. Teasing a handsome stranger was a pretty good way to pass the time.

Az held still as the other bypassed his boundaries and leaned in to whisper in his ear with a surely, alcohol-induced confidence. He placed a hand on Tommy’s thigh, partially to keep him from any chance of falling off the stool but also to show his advances weren’t exactly unwanted. “Kid, I think I might be too much for you to handle. As tempting as it is.” his eyes trailed down to where the other’s skin was peeking through the open collar of his shirt. He didn’t want to scare him off but he certainly didn’t want to overwhelm him either.

rory’s head began shaking quickly when his grip on her didn’t relent, instead he started pulling her away from the crowds, no, no, no….if alex saw her…”let me go, let me go!” she squirmed and struggled and wriggled against him, pulling back so hard she was so sure she would throw out her shoulder but she didn’t care. she couldn’t scream for help, because if someone who knew her saw her leaving with another man, god, alex would be so mad, he’d be so hurt, he’d think she cheated. she couldn’t have that. “i’ll pay you! i’ll pay you for the drink, just let me go, please, please, you have to let me go, he’s gonna be so upset…”

All her struggling did nothing to faze him as he was too fueled by his frustration bordering on anger. Besides, he was fairly certain that her reality was a bit different than everyone else’s right now and whatever she was scared of was a lot less than a pissed off angel. When they finally emerged into the fresh, cold air of the night he pulled her aside from the crowds and turned to face her. “Aurora calm down, I won’t hurt you.”
