Things that pleasantly surprised me reading The Murderbot Diaries

(spoilers up to System Collapse)

Anti-capitalism! There are both subtle and very not subtle references to corporate slavery. And it is bad!!

Pronouns! Including ones that don’t exist! And it’s normalised!

Diverse relationships also normalised

Positive mental health message! Murderbot is told explicitly in text to get therapy for their trauma, refuses to, and consequently makes its own situation actively worse.

I am unironically shipping Murderbot and a spaceship (Asshole Research Transport. ART clearly tops). Why do they have so much chemistry together? How is the text actively supporting this ship (What do you mean they combined their coding to ‘birth’ a clone?? And then immediately sent it on a suicide mission that has had traumatic flow-on effects?? And are we getting a jealousy trope now too with Holism???)

I keep meaning to make a post about the fact that, while "Murderbot" is very much Murderbot's name, it operates less like a name and more like a reclaimed slur.

But I've held that opinion for so long now that I can no longer imagine its absence well enough to explain it to other people.

I mean. There's the way the name mirrors the term "sex bot." And there's the specific way Murderbot uses its name when talking to itself in the books, and the way in the books it sometimes uses the plural "murderbots" to refer to SecUnits in general, and the specific way it gets uncomfortable about other people knowing/using it--

re-re-reading in advance of platform decay coming out and am still noticing new things.

in this moment, secunit doesn’t tell us what the what the “actual emotion” is or what its expression looks like. but miki’s reaction makes it clear that it doesn’t look angry or annoyed… it looks scared. possibly even terrified. at the concept of a human touching it.

we knew already that it doesn’t like being touched, but it had never reacted this strongly before. and the fact that the touch was based in care and worry, the same attention that abene had regularly shown towards miki? gut punch
