quick rundown of personal deets: katie. 28 years old. taurus (if u care). she/they. central standard time. i am bipolar (II) and audhd, and currently work as a program manager in the staffing industry. all of the above stresses me tf out lmao.

dragon age is rooted in some pretty shitty rhetoric that is thinly veiled as nuance and complexity. i have regurgitated some of that shitty rhetoric without acknowledging how harmful it is. that is on me and no one else. i am learning every single day. i always welcome feedback and criticism in good faith. do not be afraid to reach out if i misinterpret or misrepresent a culture that bioware has bastardized in an attempt to world build.

above being said, the characters on this blog as a whole will be analyzed frequently in character and out of character.

Not "The Character did nothing wrong" or "The Character is irredeemably awful" but a secret third thing: The Character may display moments of deep love & compassion, may even have a strong sense of ethics, and may also be capable of brutal cruelty that is irreconcilable with those traits. The constant tension between the different sides of The Character's nature is exactly what makes them compelling, and attempting to reduce them down to simply "a terrible person" or "innocent & misunderstood" is missing the point of the questions a media with nuanced characters is asking you to consider

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS VERSE - high level and unformatted because eyeeeee have not had time to do any of the above (prettier post to come).

calenhad is born the bastard son of aerion targaryen and house gardener. he fights against aegon the conqueror, his half-brother, and, after the high steward's surrender at highgarden, becomes a bannerman for the great house tyrell. eventually, calenhad is made a lord, and he establishes his own house: house theirin.

fast forward 165~ years; the lord of the house is brandel theirin, and his daughter, moira, is wed to a knight of a lower house, though she fully intends to inherit house theirin in spirit after her father's passing. in her arrangement with her husband, their first born son will take the theirin name. she eventually falls pregnant. maric is born, but it is an uneasy pregnancy and rumors begin to swirl of the child's parentage -- namely the uncanny resemblance to king aegon iv targaryen.

rumors fly, and yet still, a teenaged maric is not one of the bastards legitimized by the king.

maric fights with daemon blackfyre, his half-brother, in the first blackfyre rebellion. after daemon's death at redgrass field, house theirin is forced to give up part of their seat in the reach, caer bronach, as punishment for theirin hand in the uprising. they almost take maric's son, a very young cailan, as hostage, but maric and a member of his house manage to dissuade them. (still working out the kinks there)

fast forward 13 years later, and our favorite blonde idiot /affectionate makes his debut! ser cailan is a knight, and following the death of his father, the lord of house theirin. he does attend the tourney at ashford meadows in a show of good faith towards the royal family (and yet he can still be convinced to be one of the seven on ser duncan's side in his cousin's trial of seven ...).
