Not "The Character did nothing wrong" or "The Character is irredeemably awful" but a secret third thing: The Character may display moments of deep love & compassion, may even have a strong sense of ethics, and may also be capable of brutal cruelty that is irreconcilable with those traits. The constant tension between the different sides of The Character's nature is exactly what makes them compelling, and attempting to reduce them down to simply "a terrible person" or "innocent & misunderstood" is missing the point of the questions a media with nuanced characters is asking you to consider

another very brief hiatus - 26th to 29th

hellooo i know this is on the back of a previous hiatus; my best friend's grandmother passed and i'm traveling to be with her family and show support. i wish i had things to queue but again, my brain's a little fried at the moment from so many things happening at once. after coming back from the funeral, i'll have a brief week or two when i plan to get a lot of writing done, before i have to set off again for yet another brief hiatus. like i said, may and june are the busiest months for me it seems. love you guys! be back soon

It is always remarkable, seeing the Fade for what it was, not what his mind conjured up. He was familiar with both versions - when he was alive, the Fade's attempt to mold itself into Elvhen ruins would have worked. But Hrothmar Wrath-wolf was dead, now. The prison and it's barriers were clear to him.

And then there was Solas - pacing, but definitely real, and with questions. There was a complexity to his answer to those questions that he wasn't a skilled enough liar to smooth over. "I don't remember my time in the Beyond very well," he admitted, weaving his answer around a truth he could stand by. And what he did recall - it would have been better if he didn't. "My memories are mostly human."

But, would he shuck this form he was shackled into by his father's magic...? That was a different question entirely, and not one he intended to answer unless pried out of him.

"But I'm one person. Almost no-one alive remembers a time before the Veil. So it's irrelevant."

Irrelevant. If only it could be that simple. Solas almost envies Hrothmar's ease of ... not disregard, perhaps, but the compartmentalization it takes to pass over the idea of a time before the Veil. When it was the only thing that gnawed the rawhide of Solas' memory, he couldn't fathom such neutrality. To have touched the source of time and the world's very essence, and again be ripped from it ... there was no greater heartache.

The prison preys on his longing, as expected. Unearthly grey shimmers with a recollection of autumn evenings in Arlathan's deep forests, before it corrodes into colorless nothing once more. Yet again, Solas remains indifferent, ceasing his pacing to look at Hrothmar head on. "Have you viewed yourself as inhuman?" The curiosity is genuine, surprising even himself with the lack of his usual scathing tone.

Even embodied, Solas could never - would never forget his beginning before the heaviness of flesh. Undeath, however unwanted, should not make Hrothmar's human nature any less true. "Fickle though it may be, it is memory that forms the basis of feeling. Even the Fade as it is now is not exempt from the impressions we leave. If you feel your memory is human, then so you are."

what makes the most sense to me ( and this is just my perception, take it with a grain or even two grains of salt ) wrt the titans reacting to the elves crafting bodies, is that it came out of the spirit-born overreaching / taking more than what they put back, upending the beyond's interconnectedness. we don't get any kind of lore on how spirits and titans coexisted beforehand, and for the elves' side of things, we have a very unreliable narrator - two, if you count mythal. spirits and elements and what have you operate of their own accord, but they were all pillars of what the beyond used to be. all of them were touched by it. all of them benefitted from it. all of them fed into it. borrowing far too much and affecting another living thing's connection to the world/beyond would be a rightful cause for reaction, whether they realized what they were doing or not. the blame lies therein when they didn't attempt to mend their mistakes, and instead just ripped the titans away from that connection altogether. like what bishop said: the evanuris doubled down, and the titans responded proportionately.

it is still a very firm thought in my head - given the evanuris legends on how they came to be, with mythal springing from the sea - that she used elements of the sea to craft her body and lended the same to solas when he finally decided to join them. there are parts of him that he selected for himself, but mythal's influence is still there. sea shell, scale, salt, sand, etc. and i like to think that solas used animal bone; the source of his jawbone, which he kept as a reminder.

Flame has never been his purview. Knitted together by shell and bone, aided by Her sea-salt touch, there are parts of him that will always belong to the sea. Only the stretch of time and practice have granted him mastery of calling fire to his hands, but it still feels at times as if he is siphoning heat through wet cloth no matter how fast it comes. It's led to many singed clothes — and many tedious campfires.

His frown is a flat line, studying the mess of unlit kindling at his feet. After such a long day, he'd sooner chuck a match into the sticks and let the breeze do the rest. If not for the protesting of his Pride, he might — or maybe fein a headache and have someone else deal with it. But he hadn't gotten this far in life by not being stubborn. Solas' fingers flex and coax heat to scratch against the air once more — and a small spark finally catches, razing quickly into a steady, modest fire. His frown quirks into a satisfied smile. "There — that should do well enough."

AND ALSO -

while on the subject of giving game mechanics actual purpose - i have always liked the thought of the wolf that guides rook to little treasures and pieces of solas' thoughts as his original aspect as Wisdom - since i believe he took the form of a wolf long before he ever got a body - trying to knit itself back together.

i know that symbolically there's a reason for why each demon we face has an element to it because rage burns hot, despair is cold, blah blah - but i really want there to be a lore-driven reason why spirits can take on elemental aspects. which isn't abnormal in most cases regarding spiritual elementals in reality because they're deeply connected with nature and the balance of said elements - but in dragon age it's interesting that abstract aspects of life can still fall into that if their nature starts to shift and change. i don't like that it feels almost ... like ... reducing rage or pride or what have you into baser, primal forces - but looking at it from an interconnected weave of spiritual presence, i think it's fitting - i just don't like that it 'only happens' if a spirit is 'corrupted' ( don't even get me started on that, that's a different post ). envy and despair are just as abstract as wisdom or faith; one is not more elevated than the other imho. they are all equal parts of life.

all of this to say is that it would be interesting if certain branches of primal magic were easier for solas to master, depending on what his nature absorbs. given that he's predisposed to pride, perhaps he can wield lightning more easily than he could ice. food for thought.
