Installation
I love how the light played with the final installation how I was expecting. I think it relates to the theme of human evolution, ability to recognise patterns/intelligence and sutures very well. It really ties the three avenues I initially researched into at the beginning phase of this project.
Final 1
Really like how this turned out and I think it relates to the theme of human evolution, ability to recognise patterns/intelligence and sutures very well. It really ties the three avenues I initially researched into at the beginning phase of this project.
Clay experiments
Clay experimentations. I really like these; in the end they were shown as a triptych work. I wanted to experiment with different media just to see if I preferred that reticulated look of my work in a different way. It did a very good job of replicating the suture look but, in the end, I think I preferred the original paper idea best. They were quite hard to transport into college, so I had to last minute try to repair them as a few cacks had occurred during the transportation process. I hope they stayed relatively intact after the last installation day.
Final Variant creation
The creation of what is one part of my final installation. Originally intended to just be a development I decided I liked it too much in the installation site that I would display my work in two parts.
Paper Ridge experimentations
Experimentation with the ridges, tried twisted paper instead of the ridges I normally did. I preferer the original folded ridges over the twists.
More paper options
More experimenting with installation light in mind.
Leonardo Da Vinci - Artist Research
Despite being a very well known artist, inventor, scientist, and engineer, his art is relevant and important for me to look at due due to the inquisitive and scientific nature of his works. A famous example of this is the Vitruvian Man diagram.
Vitruvian Man
Leonardo's creation of the Vitruvian Man has importance in the world of art, as it shows his mastery in anatomy along with his love for scientific exploration and the natural world. The drawing has had much influence artists and designers throughout the years, and continues to be a symbol of the aesthetic of symmetry in human anatomy.
Different paper options
Results from adding the reticulated ridged paper around the experimental stains. I trimmed them to shape in that end.
Paper and various media experiments
Experimenting with stains on different paper with different inks and paints. In the end I like how the starch spray on newsprint stained the paper as it created that rim light effect around the stains which I really liked. I will, however, use different methods in continuing my experiments making up part of the larger final.
An experimental piece from the underside. I like the effect this has when light is shone from above. The water stains allow for the light to pass through easier and the paper affixed on the top side create a shadow. I really like that in some areas where shadows casted by paper there is an illuminating effect around the paper structures. If I was to create more of these I'd like to experiment with installation and interactivity between many of these pieces.
Added to the piece. Experimenting with how I’d like to present a piece like this. Would I prefer it on a full standard sized page? Trimmed like in the first examples or cut to shape like in the last examples. I think I prefer it to be on the full page or cut to shape with the trimmed version looking a bit odd.
I really like the way this experiment came out and especially love how the light plays with this piece when viewed from the underside.
With installation in mind, I really like the way light plays with these reticulated experimental pieces.
I was thinking of ways I could carry out one of my developmental experiments detailed in the post below when I saw this sheet lying around that had been used for drying. I thought the suture like patterns would be perfect to trace with paper like I had planned.
I'm going to experiment with different ways of creating these suture-like lines with watercolour paints, oils and other various materials.
More sutures research. Visual research.
Experimental ideas:
X Replicate the plaster and ink prints diffusion and sutures casting
- Types of suture structures done with hardened string
- Big nail piece with nails and string
- Bone chine and paper replications/Paper cast of paper experiments
X Paper replications with folded paper.
X Paper replications with twisted paper.
X Sutures made from wood or paper or sumin
Patterns within my own work.
The pattern of the ink diffusing and solidifying in the plaster reminded me of the sutures that connect the bones of the skull together. Most of the bones of the skull are held together by firm, immovable fibrous joints called sutures. The irregular pattern of the sutures makes the joints so strong that they are very hard to break.
It’s thought that sutures evolved in humans to help the baby pass through during birth without getting damaged as the sutures all for flexibility in babies' skulls.
Patterns and evolution
My plans for this module are to continue with my paper triangle technique that built the body of my final piece for Visual Language. I really loved working in this way as I thought it was a very unique way to show my interest in patterns and evolution. I would like to move away from the bird evolution aspect and maybe focus on patterns in general and why the human brain craves and can detect patterns and how humans evolved to be able to recognise patterns so efficiently.
Identifying patterns is a natural function of the human brain that helps us identify threats and helps us learn. Humans can use patterns to assess situations and quickly make decisions and or understand how something works. Pattern recognition skills heavily influenced natural selection in many ways, hunters that were able to spot prey and stalk prey and tell poisonous plants from safe plants massively increased survival in individuals and groups who were more intelligent.
Mostly everyone can identify patterns but intelligent humans can see them quicker. These intelligent humas are able to spot patterns in mostly everything. Humans look for patterns in everything to find a structure to the information we are constantly gathering. The neocortex is the part of the brain which is responsible for humans' abilities to recognise pattern and it's only found in mammals. The human mind still out performs AI in pattern recognition.
Physical patterns like my use of my folded squares to create a big snaking book like pattern has often been described as satisfying by my peers. I was thinking that there is probably a link to the human mind craving pattern and the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain when we see something satisfying. With this in mind, I would like to experiment by creating with patterns.
