I don’t think Gooseberry’s black, but she’s definitely got darker skin, lots of Jewish people do.

pre-Murkoff, those old Hollywood stereotypes probably had her use foundation a few shades lighter to look more “white”, appealing and deemed more acceptable to the children’s parents. High-key lighting was used while filming her to wash out her natural skin colour and make her look more conforming to the standards of the time. if she were born with naturally curly hair, maybe they would have used chemical relaxers or hot combs to make it more straight. These things were probably done so that parents don’t boycott the tv show for having an ethnic looking Jewish woman.

I look at the pale white skin mask on her face and it makes sense to me. She’s been told she’s ugly her entire life, I think it would have still been the case, and she was treated this way during gooseberry’s tv show.
