Something in the back of his mind was slowly fitting all of the pieces together but he didn’t have the whole image clear in his mind, he was trying so hard to make it come into focus. He frowned when she winced, biting his lip when she sobbed. “Oh my love what did they do to you?” He asked delicately, his hand holding hers, “you can tell me, please tell me.”

“This isn’t life at’s death!” Elspet snapped back “An a violent death at that! Its no right. No right at ah!”
“The world is violent and terrible. If you expect anything else you are a fool!” She snapped.

She had not meant her request as an insult, and felt a pang of guilt at Babette’s reactions. “Of course, it is no bother.” Brush in hand, she gestured to the seat the child had vacated. “Please, sit.”
“Well then...” she slowly sat down in front of Alexandra. The woman was kind from what she had seen but there wasn’t anyway she could truly know without getting to know the woman. “Thank you.”

”Why did it have ta happen? Haven’t we a’ see enough death?” Elspet looked around, her eyes red from crying. Coming here, for her at least, was supposed to be fun. Like a visit to a foreign court but on a much larger scale but all she now wanted was to be back home.
“Because this is life? And life is hard and terrible.” She snapped at the princess. “Death is always coming.”

“There we are. Pretty as a painting,” Alexandra said, adding the finishing touches to the hair style of the young girl sitting in front of her. She wanted to do more to help, but all of her skills were, in this circumstance, essentially useless, and so she had fell back on where her strengths lay, relying on her gregariousness to lift spirits. She had always maintained that it was the small, individual acts of kindness that mattered, anyway. Turning to the newcomer, she offered a small, hesitant smile. “Would you like me to brush your hair, too?”
Babette felt her face heat up, “My hair yes... I should have done something to it.” It was the first time she’d left her chambers in a week. She hadn’t let anyone touch her. “If you were serious I would not mind..”

He stayed outside of her room for a little bit until he heard her speak, the second he heard that word he pushed the door open, the world almost stopped when he saw her, all the breath in his lungs being dragged out of them. “Oh my love.” He whispered as walked further into the room, closing the door as he moved to kneel beside her, his hand reaching out to brush her hair from her face and stroking her cheek. “How can I help?”
Part of her expected him to not hear her, to stay out side the door and do nothing. She kept her eyes on the wall in front of her as she heard the door finally open. The word should have made her happy but it only made her want to scream. Babette winced at the touch, a sob leaving her body. “You can’t.” her voice was quiet but true.

She was alive. She was alive and that was what had mattered to him right now, for a moment he was so overjoyed he forgot that she was probably hurt, injured, in a worse state than he could imagine. But she was alive. It took a second for him to realize what she was saying. “Ba, what’s wrong? Please don’t push me away again. I haven’t stopped worrying. Ba.. Elskede.. Please. I spent so long thinking you have perished… Please don’t let me lose you again.”
She stayed still on her bed, quiet. He wanted to see her, he’d feared she died and there were moments that she wished she had just been killed. But she lived, even when she wanted to do it herself, they made her live. “Enter...” if he heard her say it he could come in, see her like this and then leave as fast as he could. If not then he could stay out there.

Nikolai had wandered all over looking for Babette, the place was a scene from some of the most tragic paintings in existence and he had seen his fair share. Bodies ruined walkways, thankfully most of the men were the ones who had attacked first, though the numbers may have been closer in similarity, he had not looked everywhere but the castle. He decided for what felt like the thousandth time to go up to her room and look for her in there. “Babette?” He called, some form of defeat rising in his chest.

Babette had stumbled past everyone, the physicians, her king, everyone. She’d barricaded herself in her room and had only let the physician in when he forced his way into the room. She’d laid on the bed and let the doctor clean her, saying nothing. At the sound of Nikolai’s voice she gripped the bed under her, “Go away.” She croaked, he couldn’t see her like this. Bruised and cut.

Clarissa needed to get out of here, she was still bound by her feet to the little cage, but every time she moved she could feel barbs at her back, it would take a lot of courage to get out, when she saw another one of them moving she whispered. “Hey are you okay? We need to get out of here.”
A sob tore from her chest as she tried to move, there was dried blood on her head that she could now feel. She wasn’t sure if she was actually bleeding anywhere else but she could feel it on her head. “How! How would we!”
Babbette’s entire body hurt, she could hear voices around her but none of their words. All she could remember was running and then pain. Opening her eyes panic settled in her when she realized her hands were tied. Trying to sit up she, let out a sob when her head hit the floor again.

He stroked his thumb across her cheek, “your mind is so jumbled it is not making sense?” He guessed, he wanted her to have everything she could ever ask of him, he was so willing to do as much as it would take for her to trust him, to love him. It seemed like so long since the days when they would snuggle up together and just be with each other, they didn’t have to say anything to feel the love, they didn’t have to utter a word, they could communicate so effectively without that, and yet now it felt like there were never enough words for him to tell hew how much he loved her. He still loved her, even after all this time he had never stopped loving her. “I never stopped loving you, even for a second, you may be confused right now, but that’s one thing I know. I love you.” He shook his head, “stop being so strong, even for a few minutes, please?” He was almost pleading, his arms dropped around her, pulling her in and resting his chin on her head. “I’m not leaving you, not in a thousand years, I could never leave you, elskede”
Leaning into his touch Babette didn’t try to stop herself. She’d starved herself of any touch that wasn’t from her family and it did nothing but make her want more. Her fingers brushed over his arm, feeling his skin under hers. Simple touches that she’d kept herself from having since he left her. “Is that not how my mind always works.” A small laugh left her at that. Babette was usually clear headed but Nikolai had always done this to her. When they were younger she’d spend the entirety of her time in his arms or near him in some way. Closing her eyes she listened to him, letting herself forget to be strong, forgetting that she was supposed to be angry. Her arms wrapped around his waist before looking up at him. “I have wanted nothing but you... You are the only man I’ve ever let this close. Even after you left.”

‘As am I.” She murmured, though that wasn’t entirely true. “Stubbornness seems to be a common Norse trait. Though if you ever wanted a marriage I don’t see you having any trouble.” Kirsi told her with a smile, the other was indeed beautiful. “It is lovely to meet you Babette. I’m Kirsi.”
“Not many women outside of royalty are given the chance to be with a King.” Not that Babette wanted one. She’d met kings here and so far none of them were too kind. “I have never met a Norseman who wasn’t stubborn. Some more than others, when you turn down a marriage proposal they get quite angry.” Curtsying to the queen Babette was glad she was good company. “Pleasure your majesty.”

“I still feel the sting, but it feels better being away from the place where it happened.” She smiled softly and nodded. “Either I am strong or I am simply too far gone to worry so much.” Violet nodded as she spoke. “Sometimes the saddest stories wouldn’t affect someone as much as they affect another, it is odd how life works in that way.” Violet almost wished she knew how to be overly upset about some things, because sometimes she wondered if she had emotions. “If there is someone you love you should never refuse, as cruel as my husband became, we still have happy stories from the start, and that is worth it to me.”
“You are right about that being away from the things that hurt make the hurt smaller, even if only a fraction.” Unless things that hurt you ended up being the place you escape too. Then that only caused confusion. “Hearing others stories help me realize my problems are so small. Perhaps it’s selfish.” She shouldn’t refuse, it wasn’t smart to refuse she knew that, but fear stopped her. “I think fear stops me more than anything else.”

“I thought I was speaking more sense than I had in a long time, perhaps that is just me.” He said with a small, sad sigh. He wished he could take it all away for her and make her understand all of the confusion she was feeling but he knew that would be difficult. “Ba, I was free less time than it took to gather things for a carriage. Where I was living the carriages were scarce, a week it took to get a carriage ready and within that time the woman came to me and gave me no choice, not one, and no one would listen to me. No one would help me, I couldn’t get away from her, I had to do things in the night, which is when I left her, the middle of the night, I came here first, and then… Then I promise I was coming to you I was just… I was so scared, Ba… I didn’t want you hating me.” He confessed, feeling the tears once again in his eyes that he had forced to retreat, but he couldn’t stop them. “Min kjærlighet please do not push me away. I could not handle it.” He said, holding tight to her hand. “I will never leave you again, I left once and it showed me what I needed, all that I needed was you.”
“Your words are clear. My mind is not.” She admitted, he was telling her everything clearly. He wanted her still, he wanted things like they’d been when she would swoon every time he passed her. He’d always had her heart even as children she wanted nothing but him at her side. As a playmate or as anything he could be. Babette’s own heart wanted that too, she wanted him more than anything she’d wanted before. To have him back. However her mind screamed. Reminded her that nothing stayed with her. Everything she held onto would leave her. Raising her hand to his face again as tears filled his eyes. “I could never hate you, if I wished for a hundred years it would never happen.” She let out a sad laugh, “I was so sure I would be strong if I ever saw you again.” Her hand fell from his face and held tightly to his shirt. “Do not leave me... everyone has left me. No one stays. You can not leave.”

“I am glad that it’s a choice you can make. If you have no reason to marry, and nobody is forcing you to do so, then you must follow what will make you content. A spinster with a fortune doesn’t sound so bad. Perhaps we will be old maids together.” She quipped.
“We should both agree to never marry. Ruin our families names and be alone forever but have our fortunes to keep us company.” Babette laughed. “Could you imagine the king of scandal?”

“No? I wish the choice had been offered to me.” Taytu answered as honestly as she could. “Do you know what you want? If you do not mind me asking.” The woman’s accent was hard to understand and hers was probably just as hard. “In Italy there are… many things! Their flowers, music, dancing!” She had to think of anything she liked.
Taytu was a princess, there was never that option offered to them. “The option is not truly there for me either. I have just decided that... I do not mind the consequences.” If that was the truth or what she told herself she didn’t know. “I wish I did. I think I only want someone to love only me. To be someones choice not a something they’ve been forced to take.” Nodding at the things the queen listed off it was clear that she didn’t chose her life in Italy. “They all sound wonderful.”
