Home Sweet Home in a volcano on a planet where it's a mild 695 degrees.
NOPE NOPE NOPE
Brothers: twice the glasses, twice the trouble.
What even is this face?
Brody had appointed himself Riley’s personal cheer squad, hype man, and extremely annoying gym supervisor, which mostly meant pointing at him with great intensity while Riley tried not to laugh mid-rep. It should have been embarrassing. Instead it just made Riley feel stronger, like being seen that hard was its own kind of fuel.
The kind of happiness that only comes from finally feeling right in your own skin.
Riley, finally starting to recognise himself in the mirror.
Late-night talks on Riley’s bed had started to feel dangerous in the quietest way. Just the two of them in the dark, voices low, neither one looking away for long enough, like they both knew something had shifted and neither of them wanted to be the first to name it.
Brody came with flowers and no real excuse for them beyond the truth, which was that Riley mattered and he was done pretending that didn’t show. Best friend, surgery survivor, favorite person in the room...whatever name it had, it was there in Brody’s face before he even handed over the bouquet.
Riley’s parents came to take him home, and the room softened around that simple fact. There was relief in it, pride in it, love moving quietly through all the small motions of discharge and goodbyes, like everyone understood this was more than just a ride home from the hospital.
First post-op steps: shaky, sore, a little unreal, but his body was finally his in a way it hadn’t been before. Even with the nurse checking drains and talking him gently through every wince, Riley looked dazed more than anything, like he was still catching up to the fact that he’d made it through.
Surgery was over. Riley was still asleep when Brody slipped into the room, all his fear suddenly quiet now that there was something solid to look at. He sat down beside the bed and waited for Riley to wake up, like there had never been anywhere else he was meant to be.
Nice day today.
