Huffington Post's Exploited Voices
by Suey Park
Last week, I was asked to be a contributor to Huffington Postâs Asian Voices section by email. At first I was excited, remembering all those long lost emails Iâd sent them in my youth, begging for an Asian Voices page. At that point in my life, I so desperately wanted to be recognized by the Huffington Post in any way. Of course, my emails were never answered and I instead embarked on a journey to find my own voice, a voice that I found and have unapologetically used this year.
A major lesson that I learned along this journey is that nobody will ever give us a space or a voice - we have to make and use our own. I started the hashtag #NotYourAsianSidekick  to spark a global conversation about Asian American feminism. Rather than seek white approval, my agenda has been for us to create our own spaces; spaces that did not recreate oppressive structures, but instead gave us life and meaning. For too long, the non-profit industrial complex has corporatized our movements and watered down our radical agenda. #NotYourAsianSidekick was a signal that we would stop begging for a seat at a table in corporate America and instead push for more than multiculturalism.
My politics are no surprise to most people who know my work, so I find it strange that only now when we have proven how much of a voice we have through other platforms, Huffington Post finally finds us worthy enough for a Voices page.

"Set deadlines for everything. Don't let tasks go on indefinitely."Â
^^THIS. Working on it now, setting deadlines based on time of day. There are so many lists on how to create an effective list, how to do your to-do. Hell, there's even a column about it. I've found that trying to be productive one tactic at a time is the most helpful.
So, this week I'm setting deadlines for everything. For small tasks and large. They're non-negotiable, and there are real consequences for letting these things roll over into the next day. (Ok, the only consequence is I can't have anything sweet before 8pm if I don't complete my deadline list. That's a big deal.)

"I tend to be cynical about a lot of things, but Maya Angelou is somebody that no matter how much I pick her apart, she still has integrity. She was a victim of incest and rape, and she worked as a stripper. And now sheâs a literary icon and Nobel Laureate. It goes to show that life is cumulative, and you canât devalue any type of experience."
FACT. Maya is an international treasure, and I'm so happy she's given so much to us.
Note the difference.
Note it.
but bey did that.
you have to understand. SHE DID THAT.
My love for us
My friends from the Diaspora often tell me of their hopes of visiting the motherland, which is beautiful. For them, itâs a much needed homecoming that will have ups and downs but will change their lives. Iâve always felt the need to travel throughout the Diaspora, throughout the Americas. For me, itâs a family reunion. Itâs a blessing to see how family across the ocean managed to forge new identities while centralizing Africa and African cultures.

Love this, makes me want to revisit my acrylics in earnest.
Merry Christmas to me! Celebrated my single-ness and the birth of the sweet baby savior on Christmas Eve in the pleasure of my own company. Riesling, Hagen-Dazs, flowers and a scented candle. It's such a relief to let go of the pressure to *be* somewhere and *do* something, and to shamelessly enjoy the act of chilling. It's a process, learning to be alone, and to enjoy that loneliness.Â

On my 23rd birthday last week, I took to Google (oh, Dr. Google, you never disappoint) and looked up âlessons for your 23 year old selfâ. I found the expected fareââbe gentle with yourself; donât try to have it all figured out; be patient; take time to reflect; Â your job may not be what you expected but itâs ok; Â travel if you can; believe wholeheartedly in empty platitudes; practice being as vague as possible while being completely earnest; blahblahblahâ
Then I stumbled upon this on-point gem:"Dear twenty-three:
Stop chasing everything every time.âÂ
wOW. Read that again.
This is a lesson for my 23 year-old self.  Chasing everything every timeâfrom job opportunities to emotions to expectationsâwill leave you completely spent, and standing in the same damn place you started, but worse for the wear. When I chase everything every time, it always ends with double the anxiety. So, dear 23 year-old me, time to focus your attention on chasing one or two things earnestly, for your own reasons. Do you really want to chase an image that you canât sustain once itâs achieved? No? Ok Miss 23, thatâs a sign.
Sound off, Mary Janes, what are you chasing?
