Cloud Strife x female reader

AN: Not really much honeygirl reader and not the best thing I’ve written. Maybe at some point I'll do an AU and incorporate the honeybee in more of the story. The story will not be 1:1 of the game. I'm also extremely bad at writing anything action driven. Might end up deleting this.

The Honeybee Inn buzzes with its usual chaos, laughter and music leaking through every velvet lined corridor. You're tucked away in the dressing room, catching your breath, when a knock interrupts your moment of peace. "Come in," you call, already expecting the familiar face. The door swings open, and in walks Fawn. She's been working at the Honeybee for two years now, her looks really matched her name, soft delicate features and big brown doe eyes. You helped her find her footing when she started, and since then, you've hardly gone a night without each other's company.
She hands you a folded envelope, her fingertips dusted with glitter from the stage. "This just came in for you." The handwriting on the front is unmistakable. You tear it open. At the bottom, Tifa's name is signed in her looping script.
"Thanks. Tell Andrea I'll be out in a few." Fawn nods and quietly slips out, the door clicking shut behind her. You rummage in your bag for your phone, fingers still tingling from the unexpected letter. It rings three times before a familiar voice speaks.
"Tifa, you know you could've just called."
"You never pick up," she says in her soft voice.
You sigh and lean back, letting your head rest against the wall, eyes tracing the faded wallpaper. "So, Cloud's there?"
She hums. "Figured you'd want to know. He was wandering around, looked kind of lost."
You're about to ask more when you hear another knock. "(Y/n), Andrea wants you out there. Now."
"I gotta go. I'll call you later." You hang up after saying your goodbyes, and head into the glowing chaos of the showroom. Tonight you're on waitress duty. Fawn's already weaving through tables, drinks balanced in her hands. The bartender lines up glasses on your tray, rattling off table numbers. You slip into your routine, serving drinks, charming patrons, putting on an act.
Still, your mind drifts to Cloud. What's he doing in Sector 7?
Fawn finds you leaning on the bar, lost in thought. "You okay?" she asks quietly.
You nod your head, forcing a smile. "Just someone I haven't seen in a long time is around."
She studies your face. "Then why do you look so sad?"
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
After your shift, you trudge home, unlocking the door to your tiny apartment. It's not much, but it's close enough to the Inn that you don't have to brave the darker streets at night. You kick off your shoes and head for the bathroom.
Suddenly, a crash makes you spin around. You flick on the bedside lamp, filling the room with soft yellow light. "Moose," you exhale, spotting your black cat slinking out from under the table. He meows, winding around your legs. You scoop him up, feeling the rumble of his purrs against your neck. "Sorry I've been working so much," you whisper, setting him down to sweep up the broken glass.
Moose was just a soggy ball of fur in the rain when you found him. You took him in, hoping his mother would come for him, but she never did. Now he's your shadow, the one creature who makes coming home less lonely. You always wanted a cat as a kid, but your mom never allowed it. The closest you got was at Tifa's house, trailing after her white cat Fluffy, who was always being brought back by neighbors after wandering around all day.
Before bed, you send Tifa a quick message, promising to visit before she leaves for her mission. You lay in bed Moose curled up above your head, already asleep as you drift off.
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
The next morning, you stand at Tifa's rusted apartment door, Moose perched on your backpack. The door creaks open. "Hey," Tifa greets you, and Moose immediately hops down, making himself at home.
You settle on the couch, watching Tifa kneel to scratch Moose behind the ears. "So, what's Cloud doing here?" you ask, trying to sound casual.
She shrugs, worry flickering across her face. "He showed up at the station. He looked... off. I tried talking to him, but he barely responded. He's coming with us."
You frown, confusion clear on your face. "Why? You just said he's not himself. Are you sure it's safe for him to go along with your Avalanche stuff right now?"
Tifa stands, rolling her eyes but smiling at you. "You always worry."
You rise to your feet too, voice gentler. "I know you want to stop Shinra. I just don't want something to happen to you, or for them to send someone after all of you."
She gets it. You've always been the cautious one. Tifa met a man named Barret and his daughter Marlene. She helped them when they had no place to go. They became family for her. They've been a resistance group for a while now. She's tried to pull you into the fight, but you're no fighter. You help in your own ways, gathering intel from loose-lipped soldiers at the honeybee, sometimes stealing key cards, or watching Marlene when the group is out risking their lives.
You and Tifa walk to Seventh Heaven together, where the rest of the crew is packing up.
"Y/n!" Marlene squeals, running to you. You scoop her up, hugging her tight. The room is filled with quick goodbyes and last-minute checks.
You set Marlene down and spot him, Cloud, standing by the bar. His eyes are already on you a flash of recognition in his stunningly blue-green eyes. Did they always look like that? It's been years, but he looks nearly the same spiky bright blond hair, the same pouty look, just taller and now wearing a familiar uniform. A SOLDIER uniform.
"You're a SOLDIER," you say, breaking the silence.
"Ex-SOLDIER," he corrects quietly.
"Sorry." The word hangs between you, awkward and heavy. The others pretend not to notice, even little Marlene sensing the tension.
The last time you spoke was the night before he left. You remembering being a little upset because he spoke to Tifa before you. It was nothing against Tifa, just that you had a small crush in Cloud growing up. He told you and Tifa he wanted to join Shinra's SOLDIRER program. It seems like it's not going to well if he's here helping avalanche.
Once the group is ready, Barret gives Marlene a bear hug, tells her to be good for you, and they leave.
The day passes quietly. You keep Marlene entertained, cook her lunch and dinner, walk around with her outside so she's not stuck inside all day. After she's tucked in bed asleep, you start to doze off too.
A door creaks open, waking you. Tifa slips in, looking shaken. "What happened?" you ask, heart racing.
"The explosion was bigger than planned," she says, her voice trembling. "You should stay at my place tonight.",small>
As you walk back to her apartment, she tells you everything. How they got separated from Cloud. How she doesn't even know if he's alive. This is what you always worried you whenever they went out there.

The next day you're back at the Honeybee Inn, working through another long night. Your feet ache in your heels, but you're waiting outside one of the private rooms for a "special guest," as Andrea put it. You adjust your costume, wishing you could trade it for something more comfortable.,small>
Your heart skips. Standing there is Cloud. You feel your cheeks flush. A part of you feels embarrassed that he's seeing you like this. Your uniform was revealing. A black and gold leotard with a fuzzy collar, a stinger attached to the back, fishnets, an antenna headband, and wings on your back. No one from your personal life has ever saw you in it except for Tifa. The other honeygirls help Cloud practice, he looks awkward and very aware of you watching. After a few minutes they drag him out of the room with you following behind.
Andrea gestures for you to bring Cloud on stage. You take his arm, feeling the tension in his muscles, and pull him up. He gives you a look you can't quite decipher. When Andrea takes over, you slip offstage and join a woman in a red dress, Aerith, she tells you her name is. She's laughing, cheering, and you can't help but join in, swept up in the ridiculousness of it all.
Later, you're back in the private room with Cloud. He sits stiffly as you finish his makeup. He tells you Aerith wants to rescue Tifa, who's been taken by Don Corneo's men. He didn't want Aerith to go alone, so now he's in a dress, trying to pass for a woman.
"So, you weren't going to help Tifa?" you tease, capping the lipstick.
Cloud shrugs, face unreadable. "She can handle herself."
You reach up to wipe a smudge of makeup from under his eye. He takes in a breath. You move back after realizing how close your faces were. When you're dine Cloud abruplty leaves the room. You wish Aerith good luck and tell her and Cloud to tell you how everything goes.

News spreads fast, the plate dropped on Sector 7. You haven't heard from anyone in a while. You tried calling since they weren't letting just anyone go there. You had no choice but to carry on without knowing anything. Even if you went looking for the group you wouldn't even know where to start.
After another late shift, Fawn peeks in. "Someone's here for you, the cutie from last time."
You hurry out to the lobby, relief flooding you at the sight of Cloud. "Cloud!" You throw your arms around him, barely holding back tears. "I was so worried. I heard about the plate, and I couldn't reach anyone."
He wraps his arms around you, resting his head against yours. "They took Aerith. She's being held in a Shinra lab. We're going after her."
Cloud brings you to Aerith's house. Everyone was there since they weren't able to go back home. They go over the plan on what they're going to do once they get in. You're sitting outside with Marlene, she's next you reading a book Elmrya gave he to keep her busy.
"She saved me," Marlene says, breaking the silence. "Aerith did." Before you can reply, Barret calls her inside.
You stay, sitting in your spot watching the sky. The grass is green here, flowers blooming, water flowing, beauty like this is rare in the slums. You hope Aerith's okay. You only spoke with her briefly, but she seemed very bright and full of life. "You staying here?" Cloud's voice snaps you out of it.
"While you all go after her?" You look up, meeting his eyes, you nod, "I don't want to drag you guys down."
He nods and sits beside you. Your arms brush, and your heart thunders in your chest. Sitting this close to him feels like being a teenager again, crushing hard in Nibelheim. The crush never really left.
"What happened while you were with Shinra?" you ask quietly.
He winces, clutching his head. You grab his hand, "Cloud?"
He straightens up, shakes it off, and stands like nothing happened. Weird, you decide not to press him on it since it seemed to have cause him actual physical pain to thing about. You just wanted to know what he was doing before Tifa found him. You follow. "Sorry about talking to Tifa first," he murmurs.
You blink, confused, until you remember, the night he left. "It's fine. I was just a kid with a dumb crush," you mumble, you notice your still holding hands.
Cloud's eyes are intense. "Dumb crush?"
You pull your hand away, flustered, and retreat inside, brushing past Tifa and muttering an apology. Locking yourself in the bathroom. You're usually confident about your feelings, but something about Cloud makes you hesitate. Your childhood crush is here in front of you again as an adult and you still feel the same way you did all those years ago. This is not something you should be worrying yourself about while something much bigger is going on.
The next day, everyone is gone
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
Three years pass. Three years since everything changed, since Aerith's death. You remember the day everyone came back, Tifa told you everything that happened while they were out there. You weren't able to reach her like easily while they were gone. Aerith's death hit Cloud the hardest. You all were living above the new seventh heaven Tifa opened. Cloud found a boy named Denzel, convinced Aerith sent him, and took him in. Eventually, Cloud moved out to Aerith's church, you visited as much as you could with Moose while helping Tifa with the bar and kids.
Gradually, Cloud started to open up, telling you about his grief, how he was feeling the whole time. He blamed himself for Aerith's death. The church was beautiful, full of sunlight and flowers, but you knew all Cloud could see was her. You listened, letting him talk more than he ever had before. He didn't want to believe she was gone, even though he held her in his arms.
One night, he told you he'd spoken to Aerith, you didn't ask him how. But whatever was said seemed to help him. He got better, moved back in, but you still visited the church together. Cloud told you about Aerith, what he knew about her during their time together. She sounded like someone you would have loved to know better. You talked about childhood, odd jobs you had, reconnecting with Tifa, and how you ended up at the Honeybee.
"It wasn't the job I pictured for myself, but the girls were kind and it paid well." You laugh, telling Cloud about your weirdest regular at the Inn.
"They didn't make you—" Cloud's voice falters, like he can't get himself to say it.
"God, no." You laugh. "I never did that. That's why I don't get why he kept coming back asking for me."
Cloud has a small smirk. "Well, you're just nice to look at."
Your eyes widen, catching the pink on his cheeks. "A compliment?"
He turns away, hiding his face. Lately, Cloud's been different, flirty, in his own awkward way. He does small things showing that he was paying attention to you. He bought you a necklace that you saw at one of the stalls at the market. You pointed it out to him one time when he went with you to pick up some stuff. You told him the color was similar to his eyes. A few days later the light blue teardrop shaped gem necklace was sitting on your bed. During dinner he would nudge the chair next to him when you walked by.
This is the closest you've been ever. People tease, saying things and alluding to you being a couple. Cloud never corrected them when they would sometimes out right call you a couple, you never did either.
It's slow, the way things shift between you. Cloud volunteers to help with everything. Some nights, after everyone's asleep, you find yourselves together in your room, reading, talking, just existing side by side with Moose cuddling up to Cloud, the cat seemed to take a liking to him. He's there in the morning, while you do your hair. With the kids, he's always close by, helping.
It's late into the night, the house is quiet. Cloud is standing outside your bedroom door and you're leaning against the door frame. He's lingering like he doesn't want to go. "Goodnight, Cloud."
He exhales, low and quiet, about to walk away. You catch his hand, pulling him back. He stops, nearly stumbling into you. You're so close you can feel his breath.
You stand on your tiptoes, pressing your lips to his in a quick, gentle kiss.
"I... ugh," Cloud stammers, words failing him.
"Goodnight." You squeeze his hand, slip inside, and close your door. Cloud stays just outside for a long moment, heart pounding, trying to calm himself.
