The Bachelor Alignment Chart: Season 22, Episode 2
Lions, tigers, and bumper cars - oh my!
Welcome to Bachelor week 2, ladies and gents.
This is the week we see how stir-crazy all the contestants are after living together in the Bachelor house and being “basically shut off from the entire world”, according to one Bustle article. What a delight!
This episode can be summed up as follows: two one-on-one dates (one fancy one boring), one group date (race-car related obviously and a breakdown about bumper cars), and a fight between Krystal and Bibiana. Also, this fab quote made its debut on this season: “you need to check yourself first before you try to check on other people”, to which I said:
But to get back on track:
It only took The Bachelor franchise 22 seasons (not to mention all the seasons of the Bachelorette), but they FINALLY got the first date right. They gave Becca, the lovely girl to first go on a date with Arie, a pair of louboutins, Rachel Zoe gowns (along with a meeting with Rachel Zoe), and Neil Lane jewelry to match. To keep. Forever.*
I don’t know how to express my utter shock and envy at this act of generosity but may I just say, this had me reaching for a bachelor application.
LOUBOUTINS people!!!!!!
I had to stop staring at her shoes just so I could have something to write about*. I think I speak for everyone when I say I’d MUCH rather have them than a man any day. When I did manage to focus on the date (and stopped salivating over shoes), I noted the following:
Despite Arie’s claims that he saw part of himself in Becca, I’d have to give their date a four. I expected the two to have more sparks since she was the first date, but it was the usual drill: one exciting event + another exciting event + happiness over events + one more surprise. Words like “exciting”, “best”, and “great” were used repeatedly. There was no lack of romantic moody things the producers planned. But it didn’t make me feel anything. I wanted to move on. Unfortunately, that meant moving on to Krystal’s date.
Becca and Arie’s date: 4/10
I’ll say it: I was surprised Krystal got the second one-on-one. In retrospect on this episode, I don’t know if she’s a total poser or just a really happy person whose intentions are misinterpreted (we can safely assume everything is muddied by the producers, because that’s part of their job title), but she annoys me. I’m not quite sure what connection Arie foresaw when picking her.
Despite the sketchy home videos presumably played on a 1999 VCR and an awkward meeting between Krystal and Arie’s family (on their FIRST date), I don’t think the two will (or should) go on date two soon. It was brave of Krystal to open up about her family’s history to Arie (and to tons of viewers), but that doesn’t mean sparks were flying. It means Krystal knew how to get to the following week and took the appropriate steps. Brava, Krystal. Even if you slightly annoy me, your strategy gets bonus points.
Krystal and Arie’s date: 4/10
And Krystal has almost definitely thought strategy. She decided not to tell girls too many details about her own date, keeping it private and spoke to Arie twice during the rose ceremony, even though she had a rose. That screams I-thought-this-out-and-am-not-here-to-play. However, her game play violates the number one rule on this show:
Rule #1 to The Bachelor: If you want to win, don’t get wrapped up in the drama.
Whether you’re starting it, mediating it, or dwelling on it, drama is distracting. The Bibiana versus Krystal drama won’t be the last feud of the season, but it is the first and will become an example of why this rule is important. While drama makes for good television, it gets boring fast.**
The easiest way to win the game heart of the suitor is to avoid drama and go for the moral high ground at all costs, unless you’re repeatedly provoked and need to defend yourself.***
Let’s cut to the final scene: the rose ceremony. The producers made a big stink about whether or not Bibiana would get picked after having little time with Arie thanks to Krystal. Krystal’s annoying behavior, at least as it was portrayed on camera, tells us her strategy completely ignores the fact that there are other suitors in the house. To be fair, so does Bibiana’s behavior.
In my opinion, the most REAL drama came with Jenny’s exit. She dissed Arie after not getting a final rose, then walked out, before sharing the most AWKWARD HUG OF ALL TIME with him. It was ... not part of the journey. (Arie, dude, you should have read the signals and not forced it !!!)
Arie thought the hug looked like this:
But it actually looked like this to Jenny and everyone else...
You get the picture. It was all kinds of cringey. And guess what - the cringe-worthy parts are only getting started! Welcome to the weirdness that is the Bachelor, the reality show that exploits contestants/suitors and their hearts each season all for the sake of the “journey”. We’re only on week 2 :///////
*Yeah, I’m not good at concentrating when couture is in the room.
**Maybe I was misunderstanding? Maybe it was a until she gets eliminated deal? Was there a contract involved?
***And while I love this show for many (irrational) reasons, fighting is not one of them on either the Bachelor or the Bachelorette. Yes, I understand I’m watching reality television, but fighting just embarrasses everyone involved. Also, I’m left watching clips from The Women/Men Tell All, and reading “real account” narratives on People.com/Bustle/what have you, trying to figure out whether or not they actually fought and had a vendetta against one another.
****I have a theory the producers pay these people off.

Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart Get Real About Sex and Being Yourself
Me, always
Arie: Chelsea will you accept this rose?
Everyone:
I feel like this gif is going to be viewers the entire rest of the season
Ugh ABC nobody wants to hear ANY of this
us every time the producers encourage contestants to bicker over meaningless BS
Lool😂 Do me a reblog.
The Bachelor/Bachelorette is such a weird concept to me like how do they date like 20 people? I can’t even hang out with more than four friends at once.
Arie : this has already been the craziest night of my life.
Arie: I want to give the first impression rose to someone who’s opened up to me who I feel a connection with
Arie: *gives the rose to the chick who’s spoken in riddles all night*
Arie: Chelsea will you accept this rose?
Everyone:
I LOVE HOW THESE GIRLS ARE PRETENDING LIKE THEY DIDN’T MARK PETER AS THEIR FIRST CHOICE PREFERENCE IN THEIR BACHELOR APPLICATIONS FDKSKSDK
All of the women saying how good looking Arie is and how much of a catch he is and then me:
How I would be sent home on the Bachelor
Producer: What do you think of the girl who just kissed Ari?
Me: Um… you know, good for her! I mean I would have liked to kiss him. But I’m glad that she got her chance!
Producer: You aren’t mad or jealous?
Me: Not really!
Producer: Okay. Ari, this girl isn’t giving us any juice. You need to get rid of her.
Week 1 of the Journey (Part 1)
Welcome to #TheBachelor week 1.
It’s the New Year, which means America’s beloved Bachelor franchise is back to remind us the lengths we go to to find love and how low our standards have become for reality television (or just - dare I say love in general? #singleladies). Grab your rosé, your best gal pals, and turn up the volume because we’re about to embark on yet another “journey” to “find love” for the “right reasons”.
Last season we were graced with the angel that is Rachel Lindsay, the first black Bachelorette, who put douchebags’ egos in their places, avoided the commitment time bomb that was her relationship with Peter (sorry Peter fans), called out racist BS, and did it all looking amazing. To top it all off, she’s actually going through with it too! (Looking at you, Nick Viall and Vanessa.) So you could say our expectations are through the roof for this season. And since the rest of our world is going to hell in a hand basket, we need something to distract us all! Let’s journey, shall we?
Hopefully, I’m not the only one who has no idea who Arie Luyendyk Jr. is. I started following this enterprise with Andi Dorfman’s season, so I missed the Emily Maynard boat. Chris Harrison has been trying to convince us the power of “Arie”, but TBH I’m not feeling it. On the special last night, Chris Harrison called him “arguably the best kisser we’ve ever had on the show”*. Like, does this guy have a magic penis or something? WHAT IS THE OBSESSION??? (Also, why did I feel like this was a dig at Rachel’s choice and sloppy kisser Bryan?)
It only took like two minutes into the season for Bachelor producers to throw Sean Lowe and his wife Catherine in the mix. Sean seemed like the kind of guy you knew from high school that is really sweet, but Catherine seemed uninterested, and honestly I don’t blame her. Imagine going back to the place you had your first date like seventeen times, except now you have to bring your toddler along too?
Immediately we have a stellar quote premiering the night’s antics: “hair’s down, boobs are out” (we can thank Chelsea for that gem). After the commercial break, the show starts rolling clips of blonde fit slim women who are praising Arie’s looks and gushing what they hope he holds as a husband/boyfriend/mate. The term “ready for love” is said so many times we can’t keep count**. Stereotypes are filled: we have small town vibes (@Tia), adrenaline junkies (@Maquel), and one clear front runner: single mom Chelsea.
The good news? Most of the featured women actually have careers this season! The bad news? Everyone seems to fit a similar mold of attractiveness (perfect hair, smooth Californian tans, and sweet voices). ABC, where are people who don’t look like models? Where do the rest of us, with regular faces and curves and acne, fall in love? Give us THAT show!
A perk? My favorite, (and I think should be the front runner) Bekah, has short hair which is pretty bomb ass and I’m not the only one who has noticed. I’ve also written about having short hair before, and the pressures of being “unconventionally pretty” so for me this was a exciting, albeit very small, step forward in the right direction.
Time for stepping out of the limo.
Best first meet and greet? Obv, Bekah who rolled up in a Mustang and is just STUNNING. (Contestant Seinne with her elephant token is a close second, because elephants rock!)
Most awkward? Tia with her weiner joke, except she did get a “I liked her” from Arie.
Best limo exit? Definitely Krystal - her red dress was beautiful. (A brief exploitation of homelessness as her tragic story? Not so much. Hopefully we’ll see some real character development there that doesn’t rely solely on her brother’s story and is actually about her awareness for a real social issue.)
Other noteworthy things before moving on to part 2? 13.79 percent of Arie’s contestants are named Lauren. Annaliese made her mark with a costume and the nickname “The Kissing Bandit”, which is just downright tame compared to costumes we have seen in the past (reference Alexis Waters’ shark or dolphin controversy on Nick Viall’s season). From the girl’s faces on the season, they’re shocked anyone showed up in anything but ordinary. (Annaliese’s costume has us flashing back to The Cinderella Story featuring Chad Michael Murray.) Clearly, these contestants are not as cultured in this show as we are, or playful.
And with that, we end part 1 episode 1 of The Bachelor on ABC. Stay tuned for part 2′s analysis and recap, and more crazed fun.
*Petition to have Chris Harrison do a spin off where he falls in love with Bachelorette rejects. Or just like, idk a gay/queer bachelor/ette season please?
**Don’t use ready for love as a drinking game, you will legitimately get alcohol poisoning.
