Wow… as I sit in the church waiting after service this is certainly new. I may sing in church but I love to go home immediately after service. This time I get to wait behind to see the pastor in charge of marriage counselling. I’m a bit nervous, I hear these things get pretty personal. We are doing two counselling sessions just to make sure we are adequately prepared for marriage. I pray that God takes control and I am pleased with the results of the session. a hero indeed

We all have heroes but I have been inspired by a woman who stood up for what she believed in. She may not be the best christian in the world but Kim Davis has my respect. What did she do? It's all over cnn she refused to issue gay marriage certificates because she did not beleive in it. While the law permits a gay person to have a right to be gay she is not permitted by that law to not issue gay marriage certificates. If she was discharged from her job I would have no complaint but to imprison her for having religious beliefs? Where are the so call fundamental human rights? Where is the right to religion? The rights of any person is no greater than the right of any one else. The right to be gay is not greater than the right to religion. Kim Davis is a hero who stands up for what she believes and the enforcement of fundamental human rights.

end of holiday

I've come to the last day of my holiday and it has been amazing! I'm happy and grateful for all those in my life and I thank God for His peace. Now, as work begins I guess I have to sharpen my mind to face law properly. I've stepped into a new phase now though, I need to become a super event planner asap. I also need to balance work and all that. I pray God helps me through. Maybe I should also mention that the holiday ended with a fab family lunch at oceans basket... now that was super! I'm grateful to God and may be too busy to blog for a little bit. Take care and remember to BALANCE everything you are going through

getting good help these days

I woke up this morning so grateful to God for peace of mind and the ability to close my eyes and sleep into another friday. Yesterday the gate man left and I realised again that it is not easy to find good help these days. Gone are the days of loyalist workers who do their jobs and are faithful. Nowadays a lot of people are lazy and just want to get paid. Shall we blame the consumer culture in nigeria? Or the music videos that promote fast money, fast girls and fast cars. I just don't understand why everyone wants a mansion in lekki but so few are willing to work for it. I believe that finding good help in Nigeria today would depend on a lot of factors. One has to be prayerful before taking on any house maid, gate man or driver. Sometimes I wonder whether with the way things are going, Nigeria will evolve to countries like the UK where Maids are so expensive most people don't bother. All in all I'm grateful again for life, sleep and wonderful opportunities God has blessed me with

nigerian wedding syndrome

Is there a doctor in the house? Check my temperature... I think I may have not come down with the nigerian wedding syndrome. I mean this is serious... I'm planning a wedding now and kinda wishing I went for more weddings over the past year. in a year I usually go to a maximum of 2 or 3 weddings, so no wedding Saturdays for me. I have church on saturday morning and evening so, there's really no time for that. However, now how am I supposed to plan a wedding. I don't even have colours lol. I'm going with the flow (I hope all those helping me plan don't see this). So now, I need to have a nigerian wedding. But I want a small oyinbo wedding. The kind of wedding that happens on a beach with a few close friends (in nigeria since we believe in mami water and the weather in unpredictable either unbearably hot or raining this is not possible). I want the kind of wedding where you are surrounded by people who love you and wish you the best. I think the only way I can get through this is by praying because honestly, I don't see any other way out. I'm nervous about planning it, I'm nervous about everything going according to plan. I'm feeling a lot of stuff. I hope to keep sharing my experience so perhaps another bride to be who faces similar challenges may learn or it helps. Cheers

How I spent my leave

Most people travel out of the country for their leave but I decided I wanted to see a few Nigerian states. Nigeria is such a beautiful place with such beautiful landscape that no q5 camera phone could ever do justice to. I can tell you that I even went to warri, to see what all the warri fuss is all about. (please note that I have been influenced by 30 days in atlanta (movie) ) One thing I can say is that they have the most pidgin English I have ever heard! Met a young man called happy and as he spoke, I wondered deeply whether it was English we were both speaking. Most journeys you take shouldn't be alone so I went with my fiance... well he drove a lot and I slept and I call that team work. By the time my leave is over I hope to also see olumo rock in ogun state. I think for now before I start my out of country travels I would like to see what rich treasures lie within my country. I stayed with wonderful people, had nice experiences, ate the traditional foods and all that... all I can say at this point is thank God for such a lovely experience! Btw on my hitlist next time I want to try Enugu, port harcourt and maybe kano!

I've just been thinking and reflecting and decided to start to share some of my nigerian experiences here. I'm about to get married (tie the knot) and I'm not the usual hyped about the wedding kind of bride. I look forward to the marriage but I don't know what all the wedding fuss is all about. Always have tissue in your bag. You may need it to wipe sweat, spills anything at all. You will be shocked how useful it can be to you.

NEPA now PHCN

I'm sure you remember NEPA, well now its PHCN - Power Holding Company of Nigeria and thats exactly what it does. A lot has happened in the electricity sector in terms of privatisation but this has not meant that the light situation has improved.

You need to find an alternative source of power. Consider:

1. Solar powered inverters

2. normal inverters

3. generators

If you cant afford to have light 24/7 and trust me, its possible, petrol is =N=95.00 per litre and the average NIgerian salary isnt that great... you will need to invest in a rechargeable fan

Someties, the generator may not work and unless you are living in a serviced apartment all you may have for the night may be your rechargable fan and rechargable light. Always have those two things on stand by.

FOOD POISONING!!! EEK!

I dont know how familiar you've been with this drug prior to now. But in Nigeria you are most likely going to need it. Your body is no longer used to all the Nigerian germs so when you eat food, while others may not get sick you are likely to be rushing to the toilet not long after.

Tips

1. Try to eat at only clean places - no bukas

2. Drink clean water only (pure water is not included, your immune system may not be able to handle it)

3. wash your hands before you eat

4. If you feel funny after eating anything try to see a pharmacist. I am in no way promoting self medication. Imodium is just the temporary fix to get you to the pharmacy

Find a quiet restaurant/bar you like that isn't popular with your peers so that you have somewhere to escape to sometimes

Safety and security

I don't think this topic can ever be exhausted in Nigeria. You need to be cautious. Watch your bag and try to carry bags with zips. There are a lot of pickpockets in places such as shoprite. Someone lost 20,000 Naira which had been in his pocket to pick pockets in shoprite. You need to be careful. Try to keep all doors locked. If you live alone you should be security conscious. Don't take things for granted. All staff that works with you make sure they have guarantors who can hold them accountable. There are 'rough' areas in Lagos and unless it's absolutely necessary such places should be avoided until you re-adjust to the environment. You hear stories of 'touch and follow tricks' where some devious people hypnotise people to give them all their valuables. Try to be vigilant. It's not a good idea to pick up hitchhikers. #enufsaid If you are a lady driving at night make sure no strange guys are hanging around your car before you enter. If you feel unsafe ask a male friend to follow you. One evening I saw a drunk man and - actually had to discreetly ask one of the security officers to stay close as I entered my car and locked my doors. Please keep your car doors locked. In fact, if it's lockable, lock it. Don't wear expensive jewellery in traffic with the window rolled down. Sometimes having the ac on is not just because you are hot but also to keep thieves out. Environmental Saturday

I don't know how well you remember but if you live in Lagos every last Saturday of the month is environmental. The Lagos state government imposes a mandatory curfew that means you can't go out till 10:00am. Immediately after environmental there is usually traffic. So if you are rushing somewhere leave your house at 10:00 am exactly. Failure to obey this rule could allow you to be arrested by enforcement officials.
